I think I’m going to have to admit defeat to the crushing wave of fabulous fics posted in 2017 and move on to the new pool of 2018 fics, which have already begun with a tremendous splash. As I’ve mentioned before, I didn’t have as much time to devote to fandom last year, which means that this list is shorter than in past years. It also means that I was perhaps more selective in my reading choices and stuck closer to my core interests: long, angsty, Johnlock, high-rated casefics, fixits and AUs. (Remember, I make no claims to exclusivity! These are just my personal favorites from the fics I read last year.) Even so, I think there’s a good selection here for a wide range of tastes, including some mid-rated fics, Johnlockary, vampires, retro post-Reichenbach, humor, and crossovers. I can’t tell you how frustrating it is to have been in the queer movement for 20+ years, to have studied queer theory, to have contributed to you potentially enjoying the rights you have today because I was part of a groundswell of lobbying and direct action in the 1990s….

Dude, we are a slur. Queer folks are a slur to conservative straight people. Everything we are will be used as a slur by everyone who hates us. Gay is a slur. Lesbian is a slur. People will try to use all of our words against us. Don’t fucking let them get into your head to the point at which you’re telling actual queer people not to use the words we’ve used to unite ourselves and empower ourselves for decades.

“If you’ve been part of the community for 20 years get off of Tumblr and go take care of your grandkids.” Man I would not want to be you in 20 years, realizing that shit, you don’t stop existing when you become a grown-up and you keep having interests. How do you think your life’s going to be between age 20 and age 80? Is it gonna be that boring to be you? And holy shit my grandkids? If Asy is anything like me, who came out at 13, how you expect me to have grandkids at 33ish? 35? Y’all. Really. And these are the same people who wail ‘respect your elders, don’t call them queer, they don’t like it,’ but out the other side of their mouth say ‘you’re not relevant, grandma, go away.’ 

Mmkay. Just show your hypocrisy a bit more, I guess.

Aight, so, yeah. First off, ain’t nobody calling anybody part of the queer community who ain’t identifying as queer. Queer is, and has been, a radical political and mostly blue-collar portion of the LGBTQIPA+ community. It is defined by its rejection of Corporate Gay (white, upper-middle-class, cis gay exclusionary ‘palatable for TV’ gayness) and inclusion of the entire community, and its political activism.

Guess what, if you ain’t queer, you ain’t part of the queer community. Believe me, we don’t want you if you ain’t queer, because queers ain’t afraid to get their hands dirty and actually fight. And I am so so so tired of people thinking that we’re trying to coerce people into calling themselves queer. If you wanna be part of this community, great. Otherwise, you ain’t part of it and no one is trying to force you.

That said, it’s important to recognize that attempting to censor people’s self-identity is and has been a tactic of TERFs, “purity” culture advocates, and people who have tried to shut out bi, trans, pan, questioning, ace, non-binary, genderfluid and other ‘non-conforming’ identities. It’s not a new problem. I grew up listening to Ani DiFranco (I know she has issues, that’s another post) and the song “In or Out,” which expressly, in part, is about belonging and standards in the community was released on Imperfectly in 1992. Like, really. Little Plastic Castle addresses it, too, and that came out exactly 20 years ago in 1998.

The kids on this site are not the first group to think that they can determine who is ‘In or Out.’ This site’s would-be censors are not the first ones thinking, ‘I can just demand that you not be who you are when it makes me uncomfortable.’

Demanding that we not use our identity words to describe ourselves because it makes you uncomfortable is not acceptable. No one is accepting of the idea that ‘gay’ is a word which should simply not be used. And yet, we are meant to simply write off queer and stop using that word, instead of helping people work through their issues and/or working further on reclaiming and/or simply be left alone to our identities without having to justify them. This thought process that we should just drop the word because it’s ‘bad’ is the perfect intersection of Tumblr’s TERF-sponsored exclusionists and Tumblr’s anti-recovery culture, and it needs to stop.

Kids need to stop hiding behind the idea that ‘older people in the community don’t like queer and have trauma with it,’ because we are the older people in the community, and I’m here to tell you, my trauma was around gay and dyke. Queer is the word that gave me back my life. Stop trying to use us as your Shields Against Being Called On Your Bigotry, because we’re not interested.

People need to stop saying ‘don’t call others that,’ because we’re not talking to you if you don’t identify as queer. The community who identifies as queer is who we are addressing.

People need to stop attempting to suppress the word queer. It’s not going away. We are not going away. Or, to bring back what I grew up saying:

We’re here. We’re queer. Get used to it.

Okay, then we can just acknowledge that regardless of someone else’s trauma, we never stop asking people to use their identity words? Like, for fucking serious, the reason for trigger warnings is so that I can remove myself from a situation that is triggering, not so that I can make people stop talking about things that trigger me. This is what I mean about this being the intersection of the worst of Tumblr’s anti-recovery culture and other shit. My therapist would have a fucking field day with this shit.

I would hope that by this point I have made it sufficiently clear that I am not “100% sunshine and positive about the idea of recovery at all times” or what the fuck ever. Like, how many times do I have to make it clear that I live out loud with PTSD and GAD, and that people need to be realistic about their shit, and that I don’t expect sunshine? There is a certain very bad and toxic strain of thought that runs through some of the conversations on Tumblr that glorifies the idea of anti-recovery, and is very very fucking harmful. It is the strain of thought that makes other people responsible for everything and doesn’t accept any responsibility for self-care. It is the incredibly toxic strain of thought that actively resists and derides positive and responsible management of mental illness, and instead glorifies and almost fetishizes externalizing issues and shoving responsibility for managing your shit off on everyone around you. It’s not ‘not everyone can be neurotypical, Karen,’ it’s ‘how dare you speak about this where I might see it (if I don’t set up any sort of filter system at all, and go to your blog, and maybe even click on the cut behind which you put the potentially-triggering thing, idk, why did you even post it ever).’ One of those things is ‘sardonic dealing with the shit that we have to deal with,’ another one of those things is ‘vehemently anti-recovery to the point of constant and active self-glorification of not getting any better ever, making everyone else responsible for your illness and/or well-being, and actively fighting not only recovery but any real management of symptoms or reactions.’ One of those things is potentially healthy. One of those things never is.

Acknowledging that the second strain of thought both exists on Tumblr and is a bad thing isn’t making this or anything else ‘the fault of the crazies’. It’s acknowledging that this intersection of ‘you must take care of me in exactly the way that I want no matter how bad that is for you because I refuse to take care of myself and/or engage my trauma in a healthy way and/or try to recover where recovery is defined as attempting to become more functional than I am right now’ and ‘exclusionary TERF-sponsored politics’ is precisely what makes this whole ‘queer is a slur and you must never even say the word in the presence of anyone who says they have trauma around it’ thing as bad and toxic and unhealthy as it is. And it is. It’s really fucking unhealthy to make an entire community full of other people responsible for managing your trauma, rather than managing it yourself, or yourself with the help of a chosen set of people smaller than ‘the entire LGBTQIPA community’.

I was not putting words in your mouth, I was referring to people like myself with the bitter crazies comment. People who have struggled immensely with recovery and have thus had a pretty bitter attitude towards the idea at times.

Honestly, I’ve seen some horrible shit come out of both sides of this. The so called ‘anti-recovery’ and the so called ‘pro-recovery’. I’ve seen the ‘anti-recovery’ people hop onto positivity posts and tear them down. I’ve seen the ‘pro-recovery’ people hop onto posts where people are venting about their struggles with recovery and calling them anti-recovery.

The reason I bristle at the term ‘anti-recovery’ is because it has so frequently come back to bite people like me in the ass. I get the sort of people it’s supposed to be being directed at, but the backlash against ‘anti-recovery’ people has resulted in some considerable splash damage on people like me who want the freedom to express our hopelessness, our struggles, our negative thoughts, and so on surrounding recovery without some asshat hopping on our posts to call us anti-recovery and without having to see posts where people literally accuse us of wanting to suffer and stay sick.

The ‘queer is a slur’ crowd seem to be conflating “please don’t use this word around me, I have trauma attached to it” with “NO ONE should use this word around ANYONE because some people have trauma attached to it.”

Nobody asks to have trauma surrounding the word queer. It’s horrible and it’s a result of how society treats us. But once (general) you have that, it is, unfortunately, yours – and you have the responsibility for managing it.

Needing spaces where you will never hear the word isn’t necessarily bad – avoiding triggers until/unless you can engage with them deliberately is part of managing them. However, you can’t demand that the entire community be that kind of space, especially when queer is part of many people’s identity, and those people have just as much right to safety in community spaces.

Taking away someone’s right to publicly identify as queer is violence, and competing access needs do not give you that right, particularly since queer-identifying people are not the ones that created your trauma in the first place. Part of managing that trauma will involve recognizing this. The ‘queer is a slur’ crowd refuse to recognize it. And because the ‘queer is a slur’ crowd refuse to recognize it, they promote the idea that it is the entire community’s responsibility to avoid the word queer in order to avoid touching on the trauma of some of the community’s members, at the direct expense of other community members who are not responsible for creating it.

This isn’t exactly an environment that promotes the healthy management of this trauma, because it fully externalizes it to the point where people who have nothing to do with it are being asked to give up their very identities rather than that the people with this trauma seek a different way to manage it. It encourages avoiding managing the trauma at all by seeking to make the entire community a place where the word is never used, regardless of whom that affects, and shows a marked lack of understanding that there even is such a thing as competing access needs. I believe this is the context in which it’s being described as anti-recovery, which… is a term I’m also really leery of, but I also have no suggestions for replacing it here.

I am hoping I’m not upsetting anyone by butting in, so if I am, please let me know. I’m just hoping that phrasing it differently might be helpful.

When Rosie Watson was born?

Mary was pregnant in his wedding (18th of may). If she was on her first month then, the due date would be in January. We know that Sherlock was in solitary confinement for a week before the Tarmac scene, and he shot Magnussen on Christmas day, so the Tarmac scene was around 1st of January. S4 started almost right after that scene, and there were multiple cases before she was born. Is there anything more accurate, or should I just pick a random date from the last two weeks of January for my fic?

Coz I obsessively love the show and Sherlock (and Benedict) but tbh ships are just secondary fun. I don’t want or need “my ship” to become “canon” for the show to be “good”
