I love this scene for how it shows the contrast between how Victor and Elizabeth approach and appreciate science, and how their differing perspectives foreshadow how they view and treat The Creature.

When Victor opens his present of books on insects, you'll notice he's pretty ungrateful! Instead of thanking her, he questions the gift, expressing both disappointment and dismissiveness. In his mind, he's thinking, "I'm a man who just gave a college presentation where I brought a corpse back to life and made it catch an apple. What good would a book on bugs do for someone as genius and ambitious as I am?" And that's his defining flaw: he's so focused on the next big thing that he fails to acknowledge and appreciate the little things! And that's what brings us to Elizabeth.

Her passion for insects and whatnot isn't just because she's passionate about the science behind them, but also because it's one of the few areas she's allowed to pursue said passion for science. Because society is all like "Let the women play around with beetles, butterflies, and other inconsequential things, while we men tackle the stuff that actually matters!" And, ironically, the limits and restrictions society has placed upon her have given her a level of intelligence and insight that surpasses that of the so-called "men of science." Because it's through her experiences and struggles that she's gained humility, patience, and humanity that allowed her to succeed where Victor completely fails!

And y'all wonder why Elizabeth is the best character in the film!
