"it's ok to show (x) in fiction as long as the bad guy gets punished!" the bad guy doesn't have to get punished. in fact the bad guy can win altogether. the bad guy can entirely get away with it. hope this helps

and this part might make some people's head explode but: characters can be written to forgive things you personally wouldn't ever forgive. not everything is written as what you'd perceive to be the right choice. not everything is a self-insert & protagonists don't have to be relatable.

You know, a lot of these "bully people who like the book because the author turned out to be a bad person" situations wouldn't have happened if said authors weren't idolized in the first place, or if we didn't assume the books reflected who they were as people.

J.K. Rowling and Neil Gaiman are prime examples.

J.K. Rowling wrote stories telling people to accept others for whom they are, yet she chooses not to do the same.

Neil Gaiman wrote a ton of supposedly feminist books, yet he turned out to be a serial rapist and human trafficker.

Both of these authors were treated as "heroes" for writing their stories, put on pedestals for their success, and paraded as people to aspire to be like. In reality, even before their wrongdoings were uncovered, all they did was write some popular books, be nice to some fans, and donate to charity...and almost everyone donates to charity, so that one isn't even noteworthy!

Just... don't idolize people.
