Realised that my post entirely ended up under the cut, so I am reposting and adding an edit or two while I'm at at.

I have been reading up on the EU packaging and waste law, and from what I can tell this applies mostly to larger companies/businesses that import/produce above a certain threshold.

It's important to keep in mind that these laws aren't new. The current additions/changes are building upon legislation that has already been implemented for years (some of the oldest parts date back to 1994!)

While I can't 100% corroborate the facts because the EU-LEX website is undergoing maintenance. I did find a quite comprehensive webpage that provides a solid basis for information: https://ppwratlas.com/

The webpage has several sections, which include an overview of the regulations and an interactive map, which shows you the regulations per individual member state of the EU. From what I can find, most of these countries have thresholds that go up to tonnes/thousands of units, before the regulations start kicking in.

(Pardon the shoddy screenshots, this was a lot easier to research on my laptop rather than my phone)

Envelopes and letters in general appear to be exempt of these regulations as well, meaning that if you sell things that can fit inside an envelope, you shouldn't run into issues so long as you don't label it as "for business" (if I'm reading it right).

As a basic rule of thumb, these laws are mostly about sustainability and recycling. So if you keep that in mind when packaging your wares, it should lessen the burden/worries even more (I think!).

The only thing that might be more of an issue, is when you have custom packaging made by a secondary producer. Because from what I can find, the responsibility to find a packaging producer that adheres to the regulations, falls upon the business owner. But again, it's related to quantity, for as far as I can tell. If you don't ship into the EU in large enough numbers, I don't think this applies to you.

I'm not a business owner and I'm definitely not a lawmaker. But I sincerely hope that this might help alleviate some of the fear and worry that people may have. You all are amazing and your small businesses deserve to thrive and flourish. Shit's already difficult enough without even more regulatory bullshit 🫂🫂🫂.

Edit: I realised I forgot to add a link to the EU platform where they are open to feedback and comment from the people. I have no idea what sort of impact it'll still have in this stage of the lawmaker, but I figured it can't hurt to share, in case people want to check it out. I put the search term "packaging" in, and these are the provisions that came rolling out.

Might have to discontinue EU shipping

If you have been following artistsa who own online stores you may have heard of the New EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulations coming to effect next week.

This is to protect the customer and reduce waste, but the cost to small businesses is immense as the new regulation requires ALL who ship goods they have sold to EU countries.

Why is this such a big blow? Because you have to pay a fee to every single country that you ship to. The annual fee is at least a hundred euros. Per country.

I don't think I have a single country that makes it worth for me to get on board of this so unfortunately, unless I find something good, I will have to stop shipping to EU countries (minus Finland).

Which is ironic because I'm currently trying to get back on board with shipping to the US.

Small businesses just can't win.

So yeah. Shop while you still can.

I will try to work things out but at the moment I'm swamped so if there is anything you have been eyeing in my shop, get it now.

You are trying to explain the trajectory of research on trans issues, and how the informed consent model came about as a wildly successful alternative to the gatekeeping model because time and again, people with clinical experience who actually cared about their patients found that just letting trans people transition was easier and the fear that it would lead to something bad was unfounded.

The Principle Understander is shouting at you that the medicalization of trans people is inherently unjust, and even the informed consent provider is still a gatekeeper, just a more lenient one.

You are already aware of this.

You are talking to someone who, as a first priority, needs to know what the worse gatekeeping model looks like.

The person you're talking to is asking "but isn't it good to give patients more time to think before making irreversible changes?" because they didn't hear the part where you explained that asking patients about their masturbation habits has nothing to do with anyone's safety. They missed it because the Principle Understander was on a tangent about the necessity of abolishing capitalism because paying for medication is bad, which again, yes but this is really not the time or place for that.

I think this also ties back in somewhat to the idea that between Redneck Earl who still calls me a faggot and doesn't understand what being trans really MEANS but who thinks i deserve the same rights and freedoms as anyone else, and Big City Kevin who uses all the "right" or "woke" terminology and theory frameworks to mask the fact that he's essentially spouting eugenics or bioessentialism or what-have-you, I will ALWAYS choose Redneck Earl's support, because it's actually support of my rights even if it's not quite a supportive vocabulary, as opposed to Big City Kevin's use of "supportive" vocabulary to deny my rights.

Earl's not ready for the conversation about clothes being a social construct or gender being a social construct, but he can still potentially be an ALLY, because freedom is a value that we share with him, and it's a lot easier to appeal to his love of freedom than it is to successfully teach him a whole new framework of viewing the world that he doesn't even agree with the basic tenets of yet.

do you ever find something that is so funny and you want to share it with everyone but it also requires 18 layers of context spanning things like. 90s anime. aviation history. europop. canada. in order to even remotely understand why it is so funny

in the late 90s there was an anime called initial d which was all about street racing and drifting. naturally every single drift was played for great drama and excitement.

in 1999, an italian named giancarlo pasquini released a europop song under the alias dave rogers called Deja Vu. this song was picked up as the theme song for the above anime. it in turn became a meme, a shorthand for drifting and Cool Moves as a concept.

in 1983, air canada flight 143, a full sized 767, ran out of fuel halfway to edmonton, alberta. this is not something you want to have happen to a huge airplane. the flight chose to try and make an emergency landing at a nearby decomissioned airforce base (as they were falling fast and could not make it to a proper airport), where they ran into a second problem: they were falling out of the sky at 500 feet per mile, but reached gimli (the base in question) while still too high to safely land. normally a plane would just do a big loop-de-loop to lose altitude, but they had maybe three minutes of airtime left before they hit the ground: not enough time to make any kind of circle. the pilot, therefore, decided to execute a side slip to lose speed and altitude. this is Not a move you want to do with a massive 767, because airplanes are not built for that and if you screw it up that plane is hitting the ground at a high speed at a weird angle and breaking into a million pieces. nevertheless, the captain tried it... and succeeded. the plane landed perfectly, and there were no major injuries! (a couple of people did get minor injuries when evacuating the plane after.) he did it so well, in fact, that the plane was refueled, flown out of gimli a couple days later, and continued to fly for another 20 years with the nickname "Gimli Glider."

in 2008, the tv show Mayday: Air Disaster featured the gimli glider with full reenactments as an episode on season five of their show.
