The bright light of the rising sun peered through the curtains of you and your husband, Shownu’s, apartment bedroom. Today was the day, the day you were going to tell the person you loved the most in this world that he was going to be dad. Surprisingly, you weren’t that scared, yeah this pregnancy wasn’t exactly planned but it was something both you and Shownu had always wanted.
Careful not to wake up your sleeping husband, you quietly slipped out of bed and made your way towards the kitchen. It took 45 minutes of hard work but as you stared at the coffee table covered in plates of your husband’s favourite breakfast foods, you couldn’t help but smile - especially when your eyes traced over the silver and white polka dot box in the middle. You had gone to the craft store specifically to pick out the perfect box along with the matching pastel yellow ribbon and tissue paper to go with it. You had been planning this since you had gone to the doctors and got the ultrasound pictures, you cried a lot that day, you nearly forgot that you had to tell Hyunwoo. The box was only small (just big enough for the photos and a pregnancy test), you had cushioned the inside with the tissue paper and tied the ribbon around the outside to create a perfect bow. You were ready.
“What are you smiling about?” A sleepy Hyunwoo rested his hand against the kitchen doorframe, still wiping the sleep from his eyes.
“Oh, nothing important.” You lied, walking over to your husband to plant a soft kiss on his cheek before going back to your smiley state. “I made breakfast.” You stated, signalling to the table with your hand.
“Woah, Y/N, this is crazy!” Hyunwoo’s eyes widened at the sight of food covering the coffee table before darting back to your face in shock. “You did all this?”
“Yep.” You nodded, placing your hands on your hips and smiling proudly at your accomplishments only to be squeezed into a tight hug. You didn’t get to spend mornings like this at home with Hyunwoo, he was normally at practise or touring so the fact that you were both here enjoying this moment was amazing - you being able to tell him you were pregnant was just a bonus.
After finally convincing Shownu to let you go, you made your way to the table, patting the chair in front of the table, indicating for your husband to sit down as to which he did.
“Aren’t you joining me?” Hyunwoo asked you as you leant against the wall instead of sitting down.
“Not yet, you just start and I’ll join soon.” You didn’t feel like making an excuse and instead just told him to eat, hoping he would notice the box soon so you could also tuck in.
Five minutes had passed and Shownu still hadn’t missed the somewhat obvious box that you had placed in the centre of the table. Fed up of waiting, you quietly coughed, causing your husband to look up at you, you then nudge your head to the side, tracing your eyes over the table to the neatly wrapped parcel. Hyunwoo’s eyes followed yours, widening when he saw what you were looking at. Almost cautiously, he reached out his arm, picking it up with a slightly confused look on his face.
“Y/N what is this?” Hyunwoo furrows his eyebrows at you, twisting the package around and admiring the decorations.
“It’s a surprise. Now come on, open it!” You can’t help but giggle excitedly as you watch Shownu fiddle to untie the neat bow on top. He slowly removes the lid, pulling back the layers of yellow tissue paper that you had placed on top. Hyunwoo’s whole body instantly freezes when he sees the white and blue stick buried between the yellow and next to the black and white photo. You watched, now more worried than excited, as your husband’s shaking hand reached into the box, pulling out the positive pregnancy test, time standing still as he did so.
The dense air was filled only with silence, Hyunwoo hadn’t looked up yet and you could feel your muscles tensing, you heart rate getting faster as each second passed until it was practically rattling your ribcage.
“Hyunwoo?” You voice was small, barely loud enough for even you to hear it, still, it caught Hyunwoo’s attention. His head slowly lifted, your eyes instantly scanning over his face to note some sort of reaction. His eyes were brimming with tears as they met yours, his lips were curved into a shocked but happy smile.
“I- I can’t believe I’m going to be a dad.” His lips quivered, overwhelming waves of joy washing over him as he spoke. Before you even had time to react, Hyunwoo had pushed himself from his chair, almost running towards you as he stretched out his arms, wrapping them around you tightly only to pick you up and spin you around excitedly. “Thank you.” Shownu whispered to you as he placed you back down on the floor, now resting his forehead against yours.
“For what?” you smiled back, your eyes gazing into his.
“For allowing me to be a dad, and with you.” The cute statement caused a small chuckle to leave your lips, in turn causing an even bigger smile to spread across your husband’s face. “We’re going to be great parents Y/N.”
“I know we are.” You replied back, your lips meeting Hyunwoo’s in a delicate kiss.
You were pacing around the living room, you had been doing this for nearly 40 minutes at this point. A hundred different thoughts were shooting through your mind, your heart beating at a worryingly fast rate. Occasionally however, you flustered state would be interrupted by an unpleasant feeling which you had become all to similar. You hurried yourself to the bathroom, throwing yourself to the ground as you emptied out the contents of your stomach into the toilet bowl. All you could do was groan in annoyance as you slowly rose from the spot on the ground you had flung yourself moments before. Of course, you were excited to be pregnant, it was just that the extreme sickness was taking a toll on your body, and the fact that you hadn’t told Wonho the news was causing you an unnecessary amount of anxiety. You watched yourself in the bathroom mirror as you washed and dried your face and hands, sighing deeply as you dragged your feet out into the hallway. What you didn’t expect was your heavy sigh to be matched with even heavier breaths from the other room.
You could feel all the worries and doubts once again filling your mind, you could feel your hands beginning to shake and your lips quiver. What about work? What would happen when you were both working and what about when he went on tour? What if you couldn’t manage work and having a child? What you you do then?
All you wanted was for Wonho to tell you it was going to be fine. To hug you tightly and tell you it would be ok. Unfortunately however he was in there and you were out here, far too scared to take another step.
You spent a good few minutes stood outside the living room door trying to calm your breath. Finally, with one last deep, albeit shaky sigh, you worked up the most courage you could and walked into the room where your boyfriend was. Instantly a startled Hoseok turned to face you, his eyes filled with tears, in his hands the ultrasound of your unborn child. You watched him as his eyes ran over your body, flicking between your face and stomach.
“Y/N y- you- you’re pregnant?” Hoseok stuttered out in disbelief, nodding his head up and down as if to convince you to answer yes.
“I- I’m pregnant.” You confirmed, matching your head bods to the man’s in front of you. There was still at least two metres between you and your boyfriend. Both of you too cautious to move, whilst you were scared he would be disappointed however, he was just scared that if he touched you, you might break.
Just like you, Hoseok’s head was instantly filled with anxiety about the future. What if he accidentally hurt the baby? They are so small and delicate, he would never forgive himself if he hurt it. What if the baby grew up to hate him? What if he never properly bonds with it because he’s always away? Just like you, his hands began to shake and his lips began to quiver.
“Hey, hey, why are you crying?” You quickly rush over and cup Hoseok’s cheek, wiping away the tears that had started to roll down his cheeks whilst gently hushing him.
“What if I’m not a good dad?” Hoseok’s voice trembled as he spoke.
“What do you mean ‘not a good dad’?” You questioned back, trying to hide the slight smile that had formed on your face - of course failing. “Hoseok, listen to me, you are going to be an amazing dad, our kid is going to love you so much, I can guarantee that, he will love you just as much as his mum loves you.” You continued to stroke Hoseok’s face, trying your hardest to comfort his silly worries.
“Wait- he?” Wonho’s eyes widened.
“Yes babe, he.” You once again nodded back, a gleaming smile spreading across your lips as you watched your boyfriend’s face go from one of worry to one of shock and finally one of excitement.
“I can’t believe it…” Hoseok whispered before suddenly grasping onto your waist, pulling you in tightly and now almost yelling, “Jagi! I’m having a son, we’re having son!”
“We are.“ You pulled back giggling, observing Hoseok’s face as the anxious tears flowing down his face turned to ones of happiness. Maybe you didn’t have to worry too much after all.
You had told Minhyuk to wait in the living room whilst you got the surprise. That surprise being an unnecessarily big helium balloon that read ‘We’re having a baby!’. It wasn’t the most exciting way of revealing your pregnancy but it was the most you way, it was cute, and besides you were way too nervous to come up with any other more inventive way. At the end of the white string that you had attached to the balloon, your fingers fumbled to tie the several pregnancy tests from earlier that week, along with the ultrasound from your doctor’s visit earlier that day. Despite your best efforts, you couldn’t stop your hands from nervously trembling making what should have been an easy task, seemingly impossible.
All your attention was concentrated on tying the last bow around the white and blue stick meaning that you were unable to notice the bedroom door open and close as an impatient Minhyuk walked in. You still hadn’t realised that Minhyuk had entered the room until you heard a unexpected gasp causing you to nearly jump out of your skin, turning around suddenly as your still shaking hands hastily hurried to hide the remaining tests in that you had been clutching. In you rushed state however, you had completely forgotten about the huge helium balloon that hovered above you, only remembering it was there as you followed Minhyuk’s eyes up to it. Hoping that he had somehow forgotten how to read, you quickly grasped onto it, attempting to hide its now definitely unnecessarily big size behind your back.
In all the commotion and your half fight with the balloon, you had failed to notice that your fiancé had gone completely silent. Instead of his excitable self, he was just stood there as if he was frozen in time, his mouth hanging wide in disbelief. You scanned his face worried, it was if all signs of life had left his body and he had become a statue. Unsure of what next to do, you decided to just stand there and stare, hoping that he would snap of his trance soon. Finally, after what seemed like minutes (but was probably only 30 seconds), Minhyuk’s eyes snapped to yours. And then to your stomach.
“We- I- You-” Each word tumbled out of Minhyuk’s mouth as he tried to find the right thing to say. “You- you’re p- pregnant?” He stuttered, jaw still wide open in shock.
“I’m pregnant.” You confirmed, nodding you head reassuringly as you stared at your blank faced fiancé.
“You’re pregnant.” Minhyuk repeated softly, stepping towards you as he reached a warm, comforting hand out to stroke your cheek, his touch delicate at first as if he may break you – or himself – before becoming more firm as he cupped your cheek lovingly. Throughout this entire process you had not once felt nervous, not until now. You nodded your head once again, only noticing the tears rolling down your heated cheek when Minhyuk let out a light chuckle, “those are happy tears right?”.
“Very happy tears.” Your voice quivered slightly as you spoke, god you were so happy. A wide grin spread across Minhyuk lips and you couldn’t help but smile with him as he snapped back into his hyper personality that you loved so dearly.
“Oh my god Y/N I can’t believe you’re pregnant!” He squealed, scrunching up his nose as he did so. The tears that were flowing just moments before had already stopped as you giggled at Minhyuk’s adorably happy face. Now this was the reaction you were expecting.
“How should we tell the other members?” Minhyuk continued kissing you between each question. “Do you think it’s a girl or boy? Ooh what clothes should it wear, they can come to dance practise with me when you’re at work!” Your eyes widened at the suggestion but your fiancé payed no attention, the millions of baby thought swirling round his mind in too much of an excited flurry for him to pay attention to anything else.
After what seemed like a million questions – only half of which you could answer – Minhyuk finished his rant. His arms wrapped around your waist, his cute grin still plastered on his face as he puled you closer.
“Damn Jagi, I love you so much!”
“I love you too Minhyukie.” You giggled back as he planted a sweet kiss on the tip of your nose.
You grabbed your stomach, groaning as you looked over at your husband. It had two weeks of feeling like this, throwing up in the mornings, constant cravings for the weirdest of food combinations, major mood swings. What was even worse was that you had now missed your period so you couldn’t even blame the strange behaviour of your body on that.
“Ugh, I’m getting a bottle of wine.” You announced, pushing yourself up from the sofa and making your way towards the kitchen. Maybe getting drunk would get rid of all your problems – at least for one night. As you reached for the fridge handle however, you were abruptly stopped by what you could only assume was the hand from your husband, Kihyun, gently grasping at your forearm.
“Maybe that not the best idea.” You turned yourself to look at your husband, making sure to exaggerate your confusion in your face. Kihyun took your furrowed eyebrows and pouted lips as a suggestion to explain himself. “Hmph, let’s go sit down yeah? We need to talk.” Kihyun sighed, sliding is warm hand down your arm before interlocking his fingers in yours and pulling you back to the place you were originally seated. What you didn’t know was that whilst you were just passing off the unusual symptoms as a nasty bug, Kihyun was thinking something else. He had been speaking to the new parents of the group, Shownu and his wife, and they had come onto the topic of how she knew she was pregnant. After that conversation, Kihyun had just put everything together, the vomiting, cravings, mood swings. It all made sense! And when you told him how your period was late, that was the final clue – you were pregnant, and also apparently very clueless.
You plopped yourself back onto to the couch cushion, leaning back into the seat as you watched your husband settle himself into the chair opposite you. He was resting his elbows on his knees, clasping his hands together as he examined your still very much confused face.
“You really don’t know, do you?”
“I really don’t.” You shook your head. Kihyun let out a nervous sigh, his eyes meeting yours.
“I think you should take a pregnancy test.” He stated blatantly, the complete opposite of how you responded.
“You what?” You gasped, your eyes widening as they searched your husband’s face for a sign that he was joking. Nothing. “You- you’re serious?” He nodded in response, extending one of his hand and slowly rubbing your knee.
After what seemed like an eternity of Kihyun trying to convince you you were pregnant, you had both come to the conclusion that he would go to the convenience store on the corner of your street and buy as many differently branded pregnancy tests as he could. Kihyun rose from his seat giving you a loving smile and peck on the top of your head before putting his shoes and coat on and heading out the door. Whilst he was gone, you were able to digest everything he had just told you. In reality, he was right, and honestly, you don’t know why you were so unwilling to believe him, you had always wanted a child, maybe even a couple; this was something you and Kihyun had talked about and to be quite frank there was no better time to have a baby than now.
Ten minutes later and Kihyun had arrived home, placing the five pregnancy test boxes on the coffee table in front of you. You looked at them for a while before doing the only thing you could do at this point; you went to the bathroom and took the pregnancy tests.
It had been five minutes of anxious foot tapping and hand squeezes from Kihyun when finally the timer on your phone went off.
“I can’t look.” You stated as you glared at the pregnancy tests you had placed on the table in front of you only moments before.
“Do- do you want me to look?” All you could was nod your head vigorously as you watched Kihyun shuffle forward in his seat to look down on the sticks, his hand never letting go of yours. “The- they’re positive, all of them.”
You suddenly jolted up from your slumped position “Really?” your voice was more excited than you expected as you looked to your husband for further confirmation.
“Really.” A bright grin had now found its way across Kihyun’s rounded cheeks, the infectious grin spreading its way across your face as you and Kihyun gleamed at each other. Before anyone was able to say anything else, you had leapt from your seat, pulling Kihyun up with you and wrapping your arms around his neck. Cheery chuckles escaped Kihyun’s lips as he reciprocated your action – wrapping his arms around your waist – you stared at each other for a while before Kihyun planted a kiss on the top of your head.
“We’re going to be parents Y/N.” Kihyun whispered softly, continuing to pepper the top of your forehead with delicate kisses as he did so.
