Introduction to The Iliad, Emily Wilson
thinking abt how fucked up steam engine boiler explosions can look. theyre just pipes under there
gives me the idea of a ghost/monster engine that looks normal, albeit a bit battered, only to swing their smokebox door open and a myriad of pipes come bursting out like fucked up tentacles
I didn’t know a train could be an eldritch horror, but here we are.
The Call of C'thchoochoo.
No matter how progressive or well-read you are, there are always going to be moments in your life where somebody pushes back against something that's so culturally ingrained you never even considered it before. And you'll say "Huh, it never occurred to me to challenge this but you're right" and that doesn't mean you were "morally toxic" before, it means you're a non-omniscient human capable of growth.
Oh that is so great to hear. I'm so glad you are writing!
I only have 500 words and some notes on notes on notes of the boring exposition and explanation as to why this bad is happening. I absolutely love building those parts almost as much as I love adding the boys to the very bad situations.
I feel like someone needs to be impaled.
And and and a scene is needed where they find each other again (yeah boring exposition as to why they keep getting captured and separated again is included)-- where one is secured to a tree, freezing and barely conscious, and the other finally spots him and runs toward him to free him yelling his name to see if he can get a response. And that is the point where they learn not to call out to each other when they're separated because the poor fella stuck to the tree lifts his head only to watch his man get (insert fun injury here!) as he watches helplessly. Not sure which i want where yet, depends on the other injures planned, honestly.
But no, I am not actually writing a story. I'm just enjoying thinking about one. It's the most creativity my brain has seen in years. I can not wait to see yours.

BUTTERFLIES! I love all of this.
“If you deny any affinity with another person or kind of person, if you declare it to be wholly different from yourself—as men have done to women, and class has done to class, and nation has done to nation—you may hate it, or deify it, but in either case you have denied its spiritual equality, and its human reality. You have made it into a thing, to which the only possible relationship is a power relationship. And thus you have fatally impoverished your own reality.” Ursula K. Le Guin "American SF and The Other" in Science-Fiction Studies 7, 1975.

Hello lovely(gender neutral)
I hope you're feeling better and doing better. Sending all the magic dust that creates situations for boys in your brain.
🦋
BUTTERFLIES!
Thank you! The magic dust delivery worked, I think? I'm 3k words deep into creating more Situations but am horrified to realise that about 2.5k of them are full of mushy feelings (disgusting, I know) and no one is even bleeding yet. About to lock back in and fix this.
I hope you are similarly inspired, and well, and I would love to read anything you create 💛

man sometimes friendship really is just "I saw this and knew it would give you psychic damage. please respond with agony" and then they do. and it's great

Something vibrating. The next thing he hears is…wet. A sort of shaking, gargling sound, that feels like the ugliest crying he’s ever heard. And through it, Shane’s voice. “I’m with him now, mom. He’s— he’s not fine. He’s not. I know—” Ilya wants to ask who's not fine, but he can’t feel his own body, his mouth, enough to ask. “Yeah,” Shane is saying, only slightly calmer. “I know. He wasn’t breathing—" Ilya knows there's a link, between the clinical musicality of medical settings, Shane’s audible, awful distress, and his own physical incapacity. It’s just, it’s so tenuous, and the air around him is so thick, so heavy. It would be easy, to sleep, a little. - Footage of the last game between Ottawa and Montreal is everywhere; it’s breached containment from the sports world, and now it seems like everyone is baying for Montreal’s blood. Except, Ilya is oblivious. Not exactly blissfully so, but as the fight for accountability within the league rages on without him, Ilya just wants someone, anyone, to tell him what happened.
