It took me a while to figure things out. It’s okay if it takes you a while, too!
Happy Pride Month!
no thoughts, head empty, just Luz with a ponytail.
Meet Theodore Hoffman of San Francisco. He was only 22 years old when he was outed as trans in 1902. The young bellboy’s interviews and op-eds represent a rare case of early transgender self-narrative. He was so clearly trans I wish I could reach across time and give him a vial of testosterone.
“I always wanted to be a boy; I always wanted to do things like one,“ he explained, “I can remember my mother telling me that when I was 1 ½ years old [in 1882] I always wanted to wear my little brother’s clothes. The wish has never left me.”
He was orphaned at age 10 in 1890. The young man lived with relatives in Oregon over the following years before traveling to his first bellboy job in Los Angeles. At 21, his move gave him the opportunity to transition. As one reporter put it, “the impulse to be a boy was too strong.”
Even though it was 1902, Theo did not think of his gender as a transgression. He wrote, “This is supposed to be a free country, and yet they arrest a person who is quietly minding his own business. And I say ‘his’ business because I never think of myself as a woman at all.”
“When I was 21, I decided to become a man - I was of age, so why not?” Theo found employment at the swanky Nadeau Hotel in Los Angeles. The hotel had the first electric elevator in the city and he served important leaders, politicians, and celebrities from around the world.
Another bellboy, “Little Liz,” soon became jealous of Theo’s popularity. They fought in the lot outside the hotel after Theo picked up the nickname “Big Liz.” He realized he had to find another hotel and soon left for San Francisco by stowing away on a freight train.
Theodore was finally caught at a SF restaurant by an onlooker who recognized him from before his transition. She alerted the police who swiftly arrested him for breaking crossdressing laws. He later lamented, “It is too bad to spoil a good bell boy by trying to make a woman of him.”
In jail, Theodore announced he would continue to wear trousers when he got out. This is quite important as it discredits the idea that he simply wanted to reap the benefits of manhood. He had nothing to gain by declaring himself male but continued to anyway. He was trans.
He wished to continue as a bellboy even after he was released from jail. He explained: “To be a bell boy is like getting behind the scenes at the theatre.”
The final mentions of Theodore note that he was not charged for his transgression. Despite this amazing story, there’s next to no writing on him over the past 120 years! I hope this thread will draw more attention to his narrative.
Theo paved the way for other trans people of his era. He wasn’t able to end the unfair crossdressing laws but he helped acclimate California to a new wave of gender trouble. I hope he was able to live the rest of his life in pants. As he put it, “With trousers I get freedom.”
Theodore wrote a short autobiography for the unsympathetic SF Examiner in 1902. They blamed his gender upon “trashy novel reading” (not unlike the “social contagion” moral panic today). The full article is fascinating and a great read: www.transreads.org/adventures-in-trousers/

actually here’s a bunch of aboriginal stuff for y’all to learn
don’t climb uluru (it’s sacred and incredibly disrespectful)
do NOT play the didgeridoo/yirdaki if you’re white/not aboriginal (ESPECIALLY if you’re a woman - women aren’t allowed to play the yirdaki in our culture due to the belief they will become sick/pregnant/infertile (it varies depending on nation)) the ONLY exception to this is if you’re invited in by the community
if you’re going to buy a boomerang, get one from the community and also know that not all boomerangs come back! and not all nations use them either! same goes for art/other cultural stuff
there are AT LEAST 250 nations with ~300 languages and ~700 dialects. don’t be ignorant and ask someone if they “speak aboriginal”
usually when we speak about our language/country, however, we just call them “language”/”country” (e.g. “i speak language”/”out on country”)
DON’T EVER ask “how much” or “what percentage” indigenous someone is - it’s incredibly offensive considering the australian government’s policy of kidnapping lightskinned indigenous kids from their families to “bring them up white” and “better the bloodline”. due to this + centuries of colonisation we can look like anything and we’re all STILL aboriginal. obviously there are still things such as white passing privilege but in an aboriginal context, there is a lot more nuance due to the stolen generations and extra sensitivity must be taken when discussing these topics
additionally aboriginal people are NOT the only indigenous australians, there are also the torres strait islanders who live in the torres strait islands in queensland. i’m not torres strait islander so i don’t have much to say here (feel free to add on if you are though)
in a lot of our cultures, we are not allowed to say the names of the dead or view photos/listen to recordings of them, as we believe it disturbs their spirit. if you come across content featuring a deceased aboriginal person, it is very appreciated if you warn us that they are deceased. people who are not indigenous don’t have to follow this tradition but it’s appreciated if you do
certain terms are seen as offensive by some, such as “aborigine”, so it’s best not to use them. we also have a series of regional terms such as koori/goori/murri/palawa/nyoongar etc.
contrary to popular belief, we weren’t all nomadic peoples - there’s fishtraps + evidence of agricultural and villages of thousands of people all over australia, as well as possibly the OLDEST astronomical observatory in the WORLD (wurdi youang)
don’t fucking appropriate the dreamtime (looking @ you white hippies/alternate lifestyles) - while we share some of these stories, a lot of these are exclusive and only for us and y’all are more than likely to bastardise the shit out of them. just don’t touch them.
anyway there’s a lot more i could add to this but this post is already really long so just send me questions/stuff if you want more thanks
and this always was, and always will be, aboriginal land
sovereignty never ceded
Are you guys aware of chimney swifts??
They’re in the same order as hummingbirds and, in some positions, you can see the resemblance
But like… a hummingbird that’s cosplaying as a falcon.
Sleek. Efficient. Aerodynamic. Perfectly optimized.
Also they like to sleep in chimneys, hence the name, and when they perch they become very very flat
They also like to sleep in groups
Anyway 10/10 weird little beast. Love these little flat fuck hummingbird falcons
Been a rough couple days for one of our favorite cats, send Miette some good thoughts.
TREMENDOUS news
miette tripping balls on a lizard she ate is not the news i expected to wake up to today but here we are. i hope the knowledge of the cosmos bring her clarity and wisdom and an extra brain cell
ok this tag really got me
I like your shoelaces.
Thanks! They like you, too.
Abled Person: Hey man, can you hold this wad of $2,000 and this one penny for me while I open my wallet?
Disabled Person: YOU COMPLETE AND UTTER FOOL!
The United States Government:
(Watch how many people don’t get this.)
#raises hand #i dont understand #please explain?
In order for disabled people to receive any sort of financial assistant for their housing, food, bills, medical supplies, etc., they cannot ever have more than $2,000 of resources to their name. Ever.
It doesn’t matter what it’s for.
You’re saving up for a new wheelchair?
For college?
To put a downpayment on a house?
Hell man, you just happen to budget for once in your life so that you can have some extra money in case something bad happens?
Your benefits immediately get cut off if you’re a cent over $2,000.
And, even worse, you usually end up having to pay back every dollar the government gave you that month.
So say you get $400. If they find out you’re twenty dollars over the resource limit, you have to give them all $400 back and you undergo an investigation of your funds to see if you will continue getting money.
“What if I spend the money that day?”
Doesn’t matter. In fact, from what I can tell, people who do this are actually put under investigation for fraud.
And yes, this system literally kills people.
Remember when “Guardians of the Galaxy” came out? one of Rocket Racoon’s creators, Bill Mantlo, suffered an accident in 1992 and has irreparable brain damage.
before the movie came out, Marvel gave him an exclusive preview screening. SOme people were upset because they felt if Marvel was really wanted to thank mantlo, they should have donated money to Mantlo’s family.
Bill Mantlo’s brother had to come out and explain: If Marvel gave them monetary aid, Bill Mantlo would lose his financial assistance.
That’s so utterly depressing.
disgusting
I have friends on welfare who won’t pick up a penny in the street because they’d risk the welfare they struggled to get for 10 years.
oh look another fucked up thing in this world. let’s just add it to the list. number 63858b
My brother has been on California State SSI for autism for the last 10 years, and he absolutely has to (no joke, HAS TO) spend all 720 bucks of his SSI every month, because if he puts it in the bank he risks losing his SSI altogether.
Sometimes, at the end of the month, he has no idea what to do with his money because the whole month went by and he still has 400-ish bucks in his account, and he fucking panics because he doesn’t want to get anywhere near 2,000.
And here’s the funnest part of the story!
One day he did a huge commission on Second Life and wound up earning 1500 bucks off of it, and he told the guy to donate it 500 bucks at a time over 3 months. The guy didn’t want to, and just donated all 1500, which put my brother at 2,036 bucks.
The state IMMEDIATELY (I’m talking less than an hour) called him up to tell him over the phone that they were canceling his SSI, because they noticed he had gone over the 2,000 buck threshold. He had to tell them that someone had made a charitable donation to him and that this was not a common occurrence in any way shape or form, and upon not believing him, my mother had to call to talk to them as his legal caretaker and say basically the same thing until they called off the cancellation of his SSI money.
He also had to cancel his renter’s assistance because it put him to 1,062 a month, so if he went 30 days without spending any money they’d cancel his SSI altogether. Like, none of us in the family have any fucking clue why that regulation is in place and it’s the stupidest shit in human history.
Please, legal side of Tumblr, tell me what positive reasoning this law has?
Happy 4th of July everyone! This is what the “nation of opportunity” looks like.
There’s something called an ABLE account that can help. If you are on SSI and were diagnosed as disabled before the age of 26 you can apply for an ABLE account that will allow you to save up to $99,000. More people need to know about this!
thank you so much for this information. i’m applying for an abled account right now
THERES A WHAT
OH GOD BLESS THE SHIT OUTTA YOU YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW FREAKED OUT OVER THIS I WAS
I’ve been looking into SSI; I had no idea about this!
Read till the end for the important info
Reblog to literally save a disabled person’s life

This is so important.

The Chemical Worker’s Song. Not far off our current days’ wage slave experience. I’m telling you, you need Union Songs.
Sailors aboard a ship used to hum to warn the captain they were THIS close to a mutiny and didn’t like conditions AT ALL. Because humming was something others could keep doing when you stopped. Anyone comes close you stop, but the hum of the rest keeps on and they can’t prove who, exactly, is doing it.
Just saying.
Sea shanties are a gateway drug to work/labour songs of all kinds, labour songs always end up including union songs, and that’s how you end up extremely hardcore for organised labour.
And if people want more information, this particular song is called “The Chemical Worker’s Song (Process Man)”, written by the Canadian folk group Great Big Sea.
Sea shanties and labour songs are an active tradition! Are you pissed? Sing about it.
The Chemical Worker’s Song is iconic (and in fact a longtime staple of UK LARP filk!) but while Great Big Sea did a cover of it, it was in fact written by Ron Angel in the UK, in 1964. Originally called the ICI Song, it referred to the grim working conditions in an Imperial Chemical Industries factory in north-east England.
The lighting in this video takes it from great to awesome.
I have officially concluded that this woman is a siren. My evidence:
1) Outstanding vocal ability no mere mortal could hope to achieve 2) Haunting lyrics that speak to deep and depressing truths of the world 3) No way to prove she has legs 4) I feel so enchanted listening to her sing that I’d probably let her drown me
Here’s a full version of The Chemical Worker’s Song, for anyone who’s curious
This whole song hits like a sledgehammer, but the stanza that sticks out to me lately is this one:
There’s overtime and bonus opportunities galore The young men like their money and they all come back for more But soon you’re knockin’ on and you look older than you should For every bob made on the job, you pay with flesh and blood
i have TWO hashbowns
i make great posts, how am i not famous yet?

I'm Spiderman and I'm going to kill your family
For heaven’s sake, will you people never learn? It’s Spider-Man. With a hyphen and a capital M. Superman is all one word. Spider-Man isn’t. You’re embarrassing all of us.
