They are meant to be that way! Bowls with holes like these are almost always found in graves, placed over the head. The hole had important ritual purpose, because it released the spirit of the person in the grave and also ritually "killed" the bowl.

All the bowls in this post were almost certainly looted from cemeteries.

Oh! Thank you for that context! I had wondered if there might be some reason like that, since the holes were so specifically in the bottom of each one, but I could also see where they'd been pieced together in other places so I wasn't sure if it was just a missing sherd.

I also feel like the context that these were stolen from graves is a significant thing to know when viewing them, so thank you for that.

I know it's probably always worth assuming than museum artifacts like this are more likely than not to be looted grave goods, but. Sometimes a person gets caught up in admiring the artistry and forgets that.
