A Study in an Utter Lack of Regard for Personal Safety, featuring Mal Bertha and Carlos De Vil
âI donât know why I agreed to this,â Mal says.
âYes, you do,â Carlos replies, hefting the duffel bag over his shoulder. It clinks dangerously as he moves, and she eyes it with suspicion.
And, okay, he has a point. Mal may be the leader of this gang, but if Carlos said âjumpâ, Mal would say, âhow high?â. Itâs a side effect of all the gang activity; you learn to trust each other with things that normal people have never even thought to trust another person with.
âOkay, revise: I donât know what weâre doing here.â
Carlos meets her eye, gaze as sharp as sheâs ever seen it. He smirks like an Isle boy, wide and wicked, and says, âScience.â
âScience?â
âJust trust me.â
Without anymore preamble whatsoever, Carlos begins traipsing through the woods. With single-minded purpose, he stomps over the weeds and roots, directly into the belly of the beast. Mal swears, rushing to follow.
âI just donât understand what kind of science,â she smacks at a branch before she can run right into it, âweâre going to be doing in the Enchanted Forest.â
âThe magical kind,â Carlos says, not pausing in his trek. âThatâs why I brought you.â
âIsnât that a contradiction?â
He abruptly stops. She nearly runs into him from behind. He whirls around on his heel and says, âNo, itâs not. Thereâs actually an entire field of scientific study here in Auradon dedicated to the way magic interacts with things like biology and chemistry. And cosmology, but thatâs more philosophical⊠Anyway, you,â he sticks an accusatory finger into her face. âdidnât tell me that thereâs a special magic lake that washes away curses!â
