I didn't realise that the US doesn't routinely vaccinate laying hens against salmonella. That's been a think in the UK since the 90s. They even changed the guidance a few years ago to say that 'lion marked eggs" (the stamp that shows the hen was vaccinated) are safe to eat raw during pregnancy.

found the post. to be fair to them. not the most egregious thing said on this post, but they did endorse the rest of it so.
ignoring "horny frat boys" being an insane way to describe percy, byron, and polidori, not to mention poor fucking claire lmao. theres a pervasive issue of people really wanting mary shelley's life and career to be a story of a woman being greatly underestimated and silenced by her (male) peers but persevering nonetheless and this idea is generally pushed in popular culture and by some ill informed biographers to the point that it is just no longer reflective of her actual experiences. i think people forget a lot that mary shelley existed in radical circles that, while not devoid of misogyny, had moved past the idea that women shouldn't have opinions and be writing and have lives outside of their relationships with men and who certainly were not discouraging her from pursuing a career in writing. she was deeply admired for being the daughter of wollstonecraft and godwin and then as a writer in her own right, and i think its sad that this idea that she was discouraged from pursuing writing by the men in her life, especially by her husband, is so pervasive because one of the most interesting things about her social group to me is the creative relationships built among them. people joke a lot that percy shelley is just remembered as the wife of the author of frankenstien as a diss on him but everything he is on record saying about her work implies that he would be fucking honored. they had a deep creative partnership and mutual admiration for one another's work that was much stronger than even their romantic relationship and its deeply frustrating how that is often disregarded and put down because people are so fixated on this stereotype of how they think 19th century women should exist that they dont let themselves engage with what her life was actually like.

I suppose this is very 19-mumbles of the book but I can't imagine this number of people sneering at someone for being a millionaire’s son today. It's just one of the ways in which the world has drastically changed.
Today, if some nepo kid talked about being bullied for his dad's business empire, thousands of people would play the world's tiniest violin on social media. People are barely embarrassed to say they work at Palantir, etc let alone something so innocuous being a problem. The Redferns MAY have gotten cancelled temporarily for animal testing AT MOST. Even that I doubt.

In the early 1900s the concept of nouveau riche and disdain for recently-acquired and crassly-used wealth was still very much a thing among “old families” who were not necessarily rich but had been respectable for a long time. Who your grandfather and great-grandfather were mattered to the social upper classes, and some of the middle classes.
That kind of regard for ancestry is essentially gone now, and for the better.
I can see a kid being mocked if his rich dad was particularly meme-able in some ridiculous way, though.
It's not entirely gone in the UK . There are definitely parts of society where having a "name" despite your family being largely out of money is considered preferable to being from "made money".
I've had the misfortune of working with people in those circles, and there was a strange dynamic where I (the working class person with a regional accent who was there accidentally) got more respect than incredibly rich people who had an incredibly expensive education if those people were perceived as "playing lord of the manor".
I think a lot about the different things Tamora Pierce’s various series have to say about the education system and how it treats kids. I think it shows a really interesting collection of ideas that I think reflect a lot about the time they were written and Tamora’s own evolving ideas.
Like, obviously we start with Alanna and SOTL, which is all about pure access. The question here is very simple: should girls get access to the education system? And the answer is equally simple: yes, obviously. This is a book about proving that these girls who have been denied access to the system can, in fact, succeed if given a chance. That girls are just as capable of doing well as boys are, and that they deserve the same opportunities as boys do. We are shown that with enough determination and support from the people close to her, Alanna can push through and beat these people at their own game.
Then we have circle of magic, where we are instead asking ourselves: what about kids who aren’t able to succeed inside that system? Not every kid is Alanna. Some kids are never going to be able to brute force their way through the system as she did. Not because they’re not as smart as her or as determined, but because they’re different. The system is never going to work for them, so the only way forward is to remove them from the system. And in doing that, these kids find success no one in the system ever dreamed possible for them.
Then we get to Kel and protector of the small, and we finally get to ask what in my mind are the real questions. Rather that a pure question of whether she has access to the system, Kel is also questioning the value of the system itself. How it treats the people inside it and those supporting it, like Lalasa. She is looking at the system and instead of accepting it at face value, she asks why it works the way it does, and if it hurts so many people and privileges bad behavior, is this the right way? And if it’s not, what does a better way look like, and what does it take to change it?
Idk, i just think our evolving understanding and ever changing relationship with progressive movements of the past is such a cool part about our society, and I love that you can see that here
My elderly father started talking about how frustrating he finds “the pronouns thing” and I was like. Oh no. He had such a good stand on this, he’s been they/them-ing his cishet siblings for god’s sake! Is he regressing?? And he was talking about how difficult it is to remember, and how onerous it feels to expect strangers to keep track of it, and I’m like oh no oh no.
Then he says, “I mean, the problem isn’t the gender thing. The problem is four words: she, her, he, and him. We got rid of stewardess and turned it into flight attendant. It doesn’t matter if the flight attendant is a man or woman, so we got rid of it. We just need to get rid of those. I don’t need to know.”
“You don’t need to know… people’s gender?”
“No. I don’t care, I don’t need to know, and I don’t want to remember it.”
So we can relax. It’s just a continuation of his crusade to they/them the world. He doesn’t want to remember anyone’s gender. He’s abolishing the genders.

UNPOPULAR OPINION: A lot of "mental health issues" disappear when bills are paid, rent is secure, and the fridge is full. Peace is expensive. And pretending money doesn't affect mental health is privilege.
Peace also includes having a safe place you can shut the door and be away from people, and the ability to take the day off.
Often people having a "mental health crisis" in public or "behaving erratically" are having a really shit day (week / month / year) and aren't in a position where they can go home to scream and cry about it in privacy.
My worst day at work last year ended with me coming home and laying face down on the kitchen floor half swearing and half hyperventilating for at least 20 minutes. Because I was in my own home, the only judgement came from the cat who felt this wasn't a good reason to delay dinner time. If I didn't have a home to do that in, then my completely proportionate reaction to a very bad day would have been an "incident" and someone would have called the police.

I think it should be Peter Claffey (known for playing Duncan the Tall in the GoT spinoff Knight of the Seven Kingdoms).
