Recently I have started to watch a lot of Korean dramas and I have to say that they are amazing!

Currently I am watching 'Cheese in the Trap' a drama based of a webtoon, and it is so GOOD! The characters are layered and have complex relationships. Though I am only 5 episodes in, I think I am going to binge watch it...

Imagine a typical period-set romance novel.

There’s a man and a woman. The man is rich and of higher social standing, but they’re both beautiful, kind and loved by others. They meet at a ball and fall in love at first sight, pretty much. They have a good, loving bond that meets turmoil that comes from outside forces and have to be separated by foreign influences and misunderstandings. However, the same forces that separate them can’t keep them apart and they reunite again and marry and live happily ever after.

Now imagine there’s a couple of side characters to this whole story.

There’s a woman, on the side of the female lead. While the leading lady is demure, kind and believes in the goodness of others, the side character is opinionated, too honest for her own good and certainly suspicious of people, especially if they’ve disrespected her or her loved ones.

There’s a man, on the side of the male lead. Where the leading man is naive, charming and forgiving, this guy is stern, socially incompetent and doesn’t trust easily, or never again if someone’s wronged him.

These two side characters have influence on the main plot but they have an absolute wreck of a relationship on the sidelines. They’re a mess, they dislike each other, they fight, they have a weird moment where one is falling for the other but the other reads them for filth, they make amends awkwardly after much Drama, but ultimately, after learning something from the other and growing as people, they fall in love.

Imagine you read a story like that. It sounds like an absolute classic period romance, the idealized main leads and the messy side characters that add more spice to the story. There’s something to be said about relationships being not ideal and people growing from their mistakes, but it’s enough of a side part that it can pass for an addition and not compromise the pure, ideal, classic romance of the main leads.

If you’re anything like me, however, you’d be like “damn, I wish I knew more about these side characters, that mess and petty drama is what I’m more interested in, I love the leads being nice and all but I’d relate more to the side characters”.

Imagine if you could move the lens to the other couple. If you could focus on the disaster of a courtship and make the sides the leads and the idealized leads the sides.

That’s Pride and Prejudice.

And that is one of the many reasons I love that book so much. The fact that it’s one of the most subversive romance novels ever written and people still globally perceive it and equate it with typical romance narratives baffles me when it’s more groundbreaking in the disruption of archetypes and storytelling than even a lot of romance narratives written today.

This last episode wasn’t out of character for Daenerys. It’s been hinted at all show long. It’s just out of character with what the fandom has made of her.

Let me start this by saying that I started this show as a Daenerys fan. She is a strong character, did a lot of good across the Narrow Sea, and gave Misanndei a position of a lot of influence. But what has Danys goal always been?

Since season 1, episode 7, her goal has been to rule the Seven Kingdoms. She has never wavered in that. She has killed thousands to get here already. She crucified people. She burned the ruling body of the Dothraki just to get them to fight for her. Now she is here, in Westeros, staring at the castle wherein what she believes is her birth right resides. She doesn’t have any love here, like she did across the Narrow Sea. Jon has started distancing himself from her and she believes that he betrayed her. Missandei is dead. Two of her three children are dead. Jorah is dead.

So in her mind, what is the logical option?

“Let it be fear.”

The fandom for GoT has long adored and venerated Dany. They have always glossed over the terrible things she has done because “UwU Dragon Mom”. But that is never who she has been. She is a woman that does whatever it takes, no matter the cost. She freed the Dothraki because it gave her an army, free of charge. She liberated the city of Merreen because it gave her a place to build ships for her army to cross the sea and conquer the Seven Kingdoms.

This season has had some questionable writing, especially last episode and this episode with Jamie, but Dany going Mad Queen has been building. And now it’s here.

I totally agree with this. It may be an unpopular view, but it's true. We may like her, but it doesn't change the fact that her goal was to always conquer Westeros.

This is what GOT is about, it shows you the sun and stars. Everyone is happy, there are two dragons, Danerys and Jon are happy. Brienne and Jaime are getting closer, Tormund is being well... Tormund. And then...

In two episodes your entire belief that this show is different and that your favorite characters are safe in the final season is challenged. Ghost is abandoned! There are two more episodes remaining, who knows what more will they cook up.

I feel like Arya turning down Gendrys proposal is the most got has actually stuck to character in seasons. Arya has never wanted to be a lady, never wanted to get married. I feel like it would be very OOF for her to marry Gendry and become his lady. It made me a little sad but it was very true to who Arya is and I appreciate that. Now I'm gonna go to fanfiction for my gendrya fluff.

I agree. I love Gendrya but I could never see them being Lord and Lady. I could see them traveling the world together, that’s the ending I see for them. And I hope we get it. They don’t deserve to end that way after everything .

If nothing else they stayed true to Arya’s characterization, I just wish we had more time with them.

I agree, since the first season Arya has been telling anyone who would listen that she is NOT a Lady. Honestly I feel if Gendry had just asked her, if she was interested in a casual relationship with no commitment, Arya might have agreed...

A lot of people had problems with 8.03. Didn’t like it, thought it sucked, anticlimactic, whatever. And that’s totally ok, everyone’s entitled to their own opinions. But I FUCKING loved this episode.

You have all these different people, who at one time or another, hated one another or fought against one another, gathered together to fight. Not for gold or loyalty or glory or honor, but for life. For each other. AND THAT SHIT WAS BEAUTIFUL.

You have a lannister and an ex Baratheon loyalist commanding the Knights of the Vale.

You have the fucking Ironborn(WE DO NOT SOW) laying down their lives for Bran Stark.

You have the Free Folk and the crows kicking undead ass side by side.

The Unsullied getting annihilated but still standing their ground to protect the retreat.

Bear Island and the little bear protecting the gate.

Beric convincing the Hound, a man who literally killed him, to fight with him for Arya.

Tyrion and Sansa deciding to fight for themselves and the people in those crypts knowing they were most likely going to die.

Melisandre coming back to light shit up when honestly she could have just said fuck y'all.

The men who went north of the wall (Beric, Tormund, Jorah, the Hound, Gendry) protecting the gate while Melisandre lit shit up.

Dany saying fuck this, those people are getting their shit rocked, let me pull up on my dragon, bitch!

Jaime commanding those troops on the battlements like it was his motherfucking job!

Samwell Tarly being scared shitless but showing up to fight with the rest.

A Greyjoy laying down his life for a Stark.

A Mormont for a Targaryen.

The Commander of The Night’s Watch for his brother.

Beric(I’ve died 37 times) Dondarrion laying down his final life for the bringer of the dawn.

Pint sized warrior bear taking out a fucking giant for the entire North.

And Melisandre going out in cryptic shit style.

Nearly every house, every background, showed up in this one place, this one last stand, and for once it wasn’t about that FUCKING IRON THRONE.

Character development has always been my favorite part of GoT. Not the battles, or the dragons, or the fight for the throne, or the scheming or manipulating. The heart of this show for me will always be these characters that I’ve loved so much for so long. And they fucking showed up and showed the fuck out in 8.03, and I will forever be grateful for this episode.

I would also add the the last charge of the Dothraki. Sacrificing themselves in a land not their own..
