REBLOG IF YOU'RE 40 OR OLDER :)
Let people know you're here!!
Learn Ladino
Ladino, otherwise known as Judeo-Spanish or Judeo-Espanyol is a minority language spoken almost exclusively by Sephardic Jews. It’s main influence is Old Castillian Spansih, and anyone who speaks Spanish won’t have too much difficulty in understanding it, but it is also influenced by Hebrew, Turkish, and Arabic. Because it is only spoken by between 60,000 and 400,000 people, resources for learning Ladino are scarce, so I wanted to share the online (free!) resources I’ve found for those who would like to learn
Online Courses
Endangered Languages Online Course - a series of videos that take you through conversational Ladino
A Beginner’s Course to Ladino - I cannot recommend this course enough, the lady who does the videos is so sweet and helpful. There is homework and resources. If you want to learn Ladino, you should definitely check this out
Ladino Language and Song - this course is being run at the moment so if you’re quick you can be a part of the live sessions!
Social Media Accounts
@ladino_hoy on Instagram is a Spanish account aimed at teaching common Ladino phrases
@SephardicBrothe on Twitter often posts resources in Ladino and is definitely worth following to stay updated on new resources coming out
@SarahAroeste on Twitter makes music in Ladino and often posts resources as well
Basics
Getting started - an introduction to grammar and phrases in Ladino
Diksionario de Djudeo-Espanyol a Inglez - an essential resource, this is a PDF Ladino and English dictionary
Ladino Phrasebook - A very basic introduction into greetings in Ladino, helpful for beginners
Kan Ladino - A regular radio programme in Ladino, complete with music and conversation, very helpful
I aim to be posting more about Ladino because it is such a beautiful language, and definitely deserves more recognition, but I hope this can help people get started! Shalom!
This is important. Please reblog so as many Jews can have the option to see these resources!
Light in the darkness. We are in the midst of a blackout now, so I am especially grateful for the excuse to light up the menorah. Happy 4th night!
Happy first night of Chanukah! (I have an electric menorah this year because I am renting now. But I am happy to still be able to celebrate.)
You cannot pretend you give a shit about people who suffer from OCD or other compulsory disorders, and then turn around and declare people have to feel guilt about their thoughts to be a good person.
No one has to punish themselves physically, verbally or mentally for having intrusive thoughts, no matter what those thoughts are about.
And expecting people to do grand gestures to prove they really are sorry for having intrusive thoughts is vile and abusive. No one has to perform remorse for your entertainment.
Miracles & Maccabees!
Hey you! Do you like tabletop RPGs? Do you like winter holiday themed experiences? Dreidels, gelt, and candles that don't just set the mood but are ACTUAL MECHANICS in the game?
Then you'll probably love the game I made, Miracles and Maccabees! I don't like self-promotion but I realized people probably don't know that I made a game! Right now, it's on sale for 99 cents - and if you don't have a dollar for a game right now NO WORRIES, there's still plenty of community copies available for you to take out. I just want people to see and enjoy my stuff! And if you grab a copy, feel free to comment or pm and let me know your thoughts!
Check it out on my Itch page here: https://yonahsienna.itch.io/miracles-maccabees
It's that time of year again...
Are you Jewish? Will there be/is there/was there a Christmas in your home this year? Do you see a Christmas tree as a neutral secular symbol of winter or as connected to Christianity?

Sorry about the awkward temporal phrasing, I am submitting this in late November and I don't know when it will pop out of the queue!
Tonight will be the first Shabbat in two years that the hostages mark as free men.
The first Shabbat they get to fill up on challah and Moroccan fish instead of starve on moldy pita.
The first Shabbat their families get to spend looking lovingly into their eyes instead of staring longingly at their picture.
The first Shabbat thousands of soldiers will be able to rest their heads at home without having to go back when it's over.
The first Shabbat millions of Jews will mark without an empty chair or special prayers or tears of anything other than pure, unbridled joy.
The first Shabbat the nation of Israel will experience in two years knowing its long, national nightmare is finally over and we are no longer stuck in the time warp of October 7.
Only two years separated the worst and best days of our collective lives. Those terrible two years will remain a scar on our souls until our last days, but tonight we celebrate the first Shabbat where those scars have stopped deepening and our hearts have begun to heal.
Shabbat Shalom to all those who never gave up, Jewish or not, in the fight of our lives that we never, even for a second, lost hope we would win.

I haven’t posted about the ceasefire because I didn’t believe it.
Surely, something would go wrong.
Surely, Hamas would never release all of their living hostages.
They would be “unable to find” someone. Or they would invent some clause Israel broke, and use it to justify breaking their own requirements. Or. Or. Or.
But I was wrong.
And they’re home.
And that’s…. I can’t put it into words. I can barely feel it. There is tremendous relief somewhere in me, but it needs time to filter through; to seem real.
They’re home.
And some truly awful people were involved in bringing them home.
And all around the world, Jews will be blessing the name of those truly awful people who brought them home.
And that’s going to upset a lot of people, and we don’t care.
It’s been two years.
And they’re home.
And if the worst people on earth made it happen; if they only did so for awful, selfish reasons, that doesn’t matter today, because they are home, and we will be grateful to everyone who made that happen.
Everyone.
And if you don’t like that.
Well.
You didn’t bring them home.

Various Jewish art objects, including a Torah case, yadim, an Esther megillah scroll, and Passover seder plates, from the Minneapolis Institute of Art.
Happy Tu b’Av!
This just sums up the insanity of our world so perfectly...
Torah case from Iran, 1860s
In Persian Jewish communities, the Torah scroll is generally not robed in a mantle but rather housed in an ornamental wooden case which protects the scroll, called a "tik". This tik probably originated in eastern Iran near the Afghan border. The use of painted metal for Jewish ritual objects in such striking red and green color is unique to these Torah Tiks. There are two silver metal plaques on the outside of the tik next to the opening, which record a dedication to the father, Eliezer, by the son, David.
