Obviously, I’m partially joking, but like… The fact that instruments are so obscenely inaccessible is a big problem for me.

The amount of friends I had in high school who dropped orchestra or band because they couldn’t afford to rent their instruments anymore? Gross!

The amount of kids who give up on music because their cheap ass instruments sound like shit and they think it’s a lack of talent? Gross!

I’m privileged enough to have people in my life with money who have given me accordions and cellos and keytars to dick around on, but like.

You can pry my ukuleles and melodicas and stylophones and venovas and shitty, ancient, duct-taped-together Casios from my cold, dead hands. “Oh, they’re quirky funnyman instruments.” Fuck you. They’re cheap, fun, and easy to learn.

A kid learning “All Star” on a fuckin’ thumb piano or whatever is still a kid getting into music. If that teenage girl wants to pluck out Twenty-One Pilot’s entire discography on her First Act ukulele from Walmart, that’s wonderful. I can play the Tetris theme on this $40 children’s accordion, and I fully intend to make that everyone else’s problem.

The date on that stamp clearly says “02 NOV ‘18″ - November 2, 2018. I doubt they mailed that thing 2 years early. There’s no date on the tweet in that screen shot, but with quick Twitter search I found the original tweet, which is in fact from November 9, 2018. A cursory search doesn’t turn up anyone by the name “Tiff Whit” on Twitter or Facebook (though it’s entirely possibly they set their preferences so that they couldn’t be searched for). I cannot find any public source for the information in the screenshot other than that tweet.

I also can’t find any source or reporting that this is happening currently in Chatham County, GA. Saying something isn’t happening at this moment in a particular place is not the same as saying it can’t happen. But look - disinformation always, ALWAYS does more harm than good. No matter how much you think “Well, they WOULD do this,” it doesn’t make it OK or helpful. There’s enough actually going on to be angry about. We cannot afford to propagate bullshit.

And while I’m mad about disinformation, a lot more of y’all desperately need to internalize the fact that there are organized people purposefully creating, spreading, and encouraging disinformation like this to do harm. It usually serves several purposes, but often its underlying purpose is to try to discover, track, and/or discredit anyone who leans even vaguely left. These people know their shit. They know what will make you angry. They know the kinds of things will make you think, “This is important information and I have to make sure other people know about it NOW.” They know how to make you less likely to fact-check the information or question its apparent source. They know how to screen themselves and encourage bad actors to do their work. They know they are playing the long game and that many of you believe you could never possibly be pieces.

Let’s pretend this specific case was disinformation spread with the intention to harm - how was it likely meant to do so? It will make many people think, “What’s the point of trying to vote?” Maybe not the first time a report like this comes across their social media, but after several? It’s a lot easier to make people think illegal things are happening all over the country, convince them their vote won’t matter because it won’t even get counted, and discourage them from voting in the first place than it is to actually do a lot more illegal things to keep them from voting.

But even if you think I’m a tinfoil hat nutcase (*cough* COINTELPRO *cough*), please do the bare minimum of really reading what a post says, fact-checking the basics (hey, that date is from two years ago!), and looking for any actual source before slamming the reblog button, for fuck’s sake.
