It kind of fucks with me that somebody killed ötzi the iceman because ötzi himself is like whatever but the silent presence of human hands that drew back the string of the bow that shot the arrow that killed him is crazy. the idea that there were various people involved in that situation and while one of them has had his last hours painstakingly reconstructed and studied to no end, the others now only exist insofar that an arrowhead had to get into his shoulder somehow. imagine killing someone and then suddenly your entire existence is only a vague shadow implied by the fact that you killed them. much to consider
Testing the mummified bone marrow of ötzi to figure out his ancestry whole time there’s definitely another person, maybe more than one, standing in the room with us but I can never see or speak to them because I only know them through the assurance that they were there too in the form of one single arrowhead. I hate prehistory so much it’s unreal
I hate it too tbh

Don’t feel sad about the last Neanderthals.
The last Neanderthal man died while watching his mixed grandchildren play in the meadows with the sheeps. He was glad he no longer had to travel so far; there was enough food for everyone. The air was good, and it wasn’t very cold anymore.

i wonder if this whole Calling Typical Misogyny "Porn Addiction" thing wasn't just a successful psyop to shift feminist critique into a right wing framework i.e. trying to make it about "modern degeneracy" and thus paralyzing discourse on the root issue
everything these people claim is "porn addiction" is literally just misogyny. porn could be dismantled globally and men will still view and treat women as sexual property because surprise! turns out men have expected sexual subservience from women loooong before porn ever existed
Oh my god rip the saint helena earwig. It was once the worlds largest earwig
Gravel mining completely destroyed its habitat and the introduction of invasive predators was the nail in the coffin. Fucking gravel mining..
Reminds me of this photo “After the Destruction” that won teenager Andrea Dominizi Young Photographer of the Year with the NHM of London last year.
The scene shows a longhorn beetle of the species Morimus asper across from the logging machinery that threatens its shrinking habitat. Some see the photograph as a heartbreaking portrayal of inevitable doom (and the bug’s genus name meaning “destined to die” doesn’t help) while others see a hopeful and defiant message where the beetle is as large as the machinery itself.
It’s probably my very favorite wildlife shot of the past decade, and one that gets people thinking about invertebrate conservation in a powerful way.

the reason most anti bullying psa's completely fail is because they fail to identify why people bully others, and fail to identify that kids actually do internalize oppressive structures REALLY early on. white kids understand that racialized kids are easy targets, and white teachers either fail to catch racism or are racist themselves. non-disabled kids understand that disabilities are easy to pick on, kids recognize the sissy archetype very early on, boys internalize that girls are lesser than them, kids notice they can take advantage of autistic behavior, and it flies under the radar cause teachers offer little to no support to marginalized kids or outright victim blame them. "ignoring bullies" is a model that assumes bullies just want attention. we should instead assume bullies are taking advantage of others.
