When I was 10 I asked my dad to explain politics to me and when he was done with his shockingly nuanced description of the American bipartisan system he asked me how I would structure the government if it was up to me. I described a world where everyone was paid what they needed, had a house, and enough food. He said, "Void-juice that's great, but you should know most people call that communism".

I've told this story on here before but @void--juice's story made me think of it again... My dad worked for NASA and he did a lot of work on the telescopes that went up in the late 90s/early 2000s. I was a curious kid and I knew his work really mattered to my dad so I was always asking about when things were getting launched. Often the answer was "we're waiting on Congress for funding" or similar. And one time... I was probably about 10 years old, I said "well... I guess that makes sense. I'm sure going to space is one of the most expensive things we do." And my dad looks at me... I'll never forget the look on his face. He goes "What do you think the most expensive thing we do as a country is?" And I hemmed and I hawed because I was sure it wasn't the space program even though I was sure that had to be in the top three. My first guess was education. Everyone had to go to school. Nope. Roads? Bridges? Cars were everywhere. Nope. What about... things like electricity? Phone lines? Cable? Nope. "The military. By a factor of ten at least." I was gobsmacked. It was peacetime (at least by most reckoning... this was post-Gulf War and well before 9/11). What the hell was the military doing being so expensive if we weren't doing anything with it? So that was the moment I became a "radical." Because that was absolutely stupid and continues to be.

Look, always remember. Any sort of porn ban will be used to:

ban a variety of queer content (both trans and just other queer stuff)

ban certain health education content (especially on women's health)

create a precedent to charge minorities for any sort of content that will be argued to be then "pornographic"

will also very certainly create precedent to go against platforms like tumblr and AO3 and whereever you consume your favorite fanwork

will definitely also charge any depiction of "female presenting nipples"

Even if you think all porn is bad (you are wrong by the way), this stuff is never just about porn. Heck, chances are they would use such a law to in some roundabout way also prevent simple sex ed!

There is no "chances are." The original Comstock Act was used to deliberately and specifically do that. Like, as a primary goal.

Their intention has very little to do with "porn", actually.

It is about silencing things most people wouldn't consider porn by labeling them corrupting to morality and therefore pornographic.

They get people on board by talking about pornography most people WOULD agree is pornography, and then don't define it, because "everyone knows" what porn is.

Yeah, sure, I guess probably there is that extreme end of the bell curve 99.9% of people would agree is porn. They want you focused on that. Not on the other side of the curve, which they are leaving themselves free to move wherever they like.

So yeah, when we have been saying that anti-porn lefties/liberals/Dems are literally enabling their own oppression, this is what we mean.

The fight to ban porn is NOT a fight about human rights or child safety. It's an excuse to prosecute basically anyone they want.

Don't fucking fall for this.

This is the same fucking censorship as bills that ban books. It's the same ideology of conservatives demanding that sex ed books be locked up where only adults can get them.

There is nothing progressive about banning porn. There is nothing feminist about banning porn. There is nothing anti-trafficking about banning porn.

If you think porn is exploitative and bad and you want to "save" or actually help the people involved, banning it is the worst tactic you can use. Banning something never makes it go away, it just makes the vulnerable more vulnerable to it and gives the authoritarians another boot to put on your neck.

Freedom of speech, press, and expression means EVERYTHING a person might want to say, print, or express or it doesn't protect anyone at all.

We should be pushing for there to be NO EXCEPTIONS TO FREE SPEECH. NONE. And when I say none I MEAN NONE WHATSOEVER. It HAS to be that way. That HAS to be the line.

You know what the anarchists and communists referred to in the original post were doing at the time? They were assassinating people, throwing bombs at government officials, and starting bloody street brawls with fascist goons.

That's what would have stopped the Nazis if polite liberals had joined in. Force. Violence. Shit that would get them labelled as terrorists.

This ain't my fight, I don't live in a country where fascism is prevalent. But it's sure as shit going to affect me if the fascist party in America is allowed to consolidate their power and assume total control over the richest and most powerful country on the planet. So you Americans need to fight, now, before it's too late, both for your sake and for everyone else's.

The time for peaceful protest, calling representatives, donating to political campaigns for mealy-mouthed cowards, is over. The way to stop fascism is to fight them, with guns and bombs and fists. I hope enough of you get that through your heads and step up in time to save your country.
