Maul is a cockroach because killing him like you would a normal person, just doesn't fucking work. You can hose this man down with a whole water tower's worth of Raid and the bitch will somehow not only develop an immunity, but then crawl into your bed at night just to make you choke on all the empty Raid cans.

Obi-Wan is a cat because despite everyone's best efforts, he continuously survives scenarios that would have obliterated lesser men. Like your average house cat, he fully acknowledges the fact that he may be outmatched by a larger and deadlier creature but ultimately chooses to square up regardless. Despite the fact that he continues to get into these deadly scrapes, he always comes out looking refined (despite any and all life threatening injuries) and wouldn't look the least bit out of place just curled up in a cozy sun spot.

These are both correct, but I think the big distinction is that Maul survives increasingly deadly scenarios simply because he is built that way. Cockroaches do not choose the ability to survive nuclear bombs. it is simply what they are.

Whereas Obi-Wan's survival depends almost entirely on his skill, with a healthy dose of assistance from the Force. Cats look like they have nine lives because they have finely tuned inner ears that allow them to right themselves midair and land on their feet, making it so that they can survive falls that would easily kill most other animals.

Obi-Wan doesn't die until he decides not to try. Maul simply can't be killed.

i know it's a common talking point by now that our tech overlords read the wrong (by which i mean sexist, racist, colonial, etc.) mid-century scifi or failed to understand the specfic they claim to love (hitchhiker's guide, lotr, etc.) we've all made jokes about how maybe they wouldn't be so awful if they'd read more le guin or butler or delaney.

however i don't think i've seen people talk about the fact that these "techno-optimists" who are so looking forward to a "techno-utopia" never reference, cite, or allude to star trek, which is the single most influential techno-optimistic piece of media ever created.

and i mean, it's obvious why. star trek isn't just about exploring the stars, discovering new planets, creating cyborgs and computers and all kinds of futuristic technologies.

star trek is about about eliminating scarcity so that everyone can thrive. star trek is about a multicultural future of peace and prosperity for all. star trek is about infinite diversity in infinite combinations. star trek is about finding new life forms who look at the world completely differently than we do and learning from them. star trek is about a globalism that is rooted in humanism and peace. star trek is about providing role models for people (especially kids) who have never seen those who look like them in scifi, igniting their imaginations, and helping them think, "wow, there will be people like me in the future! even if i'm black, a woman, blind, trans, queer, not from the u.s.a., etc.!"

these guys HATE all of those things, and star trek is so explicitly about them that they can't even misunderstand it, misappropriate, or misuse it. so we get palantir, m*sk talking about how much he loves hitchhiker's guide, and j.d. vance naming his venture capital company after one of the rings from lotr. but we don't see anyone naming their robot data or their talking computer after majel barrett or talking about how star trek inspired them to get where they are now. because it didn't inspire them. because its vision was not the one they latched onto.

you also don't hear them citing, say, carl sagan. or hedy lamarr or ada lovelace or rosalind franklin. or any of the other stem-y people who were also deeply humanist and who profoundly love our little blue planet. they only care about stories they can believe are about white dudes accomplishing things through a domination mindset and being oh so special. they're obsessed with jung and campbell and their bullshit ideas about ~hero's journeys~ and anything they can twist to be about their misogynist, racist, ableist, queerphobic, imperialist agenda.

and i just think that is very telling.

Tldr Amnesty International, global human rights organisation, published a report called 'A growing threat: the anti-rights movement in the UK'. In it is detailed, amongst others, a whole bunch of transphobic groups and organisations, including Beira's Place, JK Rowling's trans exclusionary sexual violence support service. JK Rowling threw a shit fit and got Amnesty to take the report down by threatening libel. This was obviously not enough, because you can't appease a fascist, so now she's going to bankroll a bunch of lawsuits anyway through the JK Rowling Women's Fund.*

Probably the funniest take on Ozai is that he's a "master manipulator". Guys, this is the same man who thought asking his abusive father nicely to make him heir would actually work. He's got all the subtlety of a hammer; where do you think Zuko gets it from?

And yeah, I know someone's going to point out how Ozai manipulated his children, but like, that's the thing. They're his children. Manipulating someone who is entirely under your control and does not have enough life experience to see through your bullshit isn't very hard.

It's nuts how common it is to not allow children to be angry, even (especially) in households where adults are angry all the time. As a child I knew my own anger was unacceptable--not just expressing it outwardly but feeling it at all. So now as an adult my immediate reaction to my own anger is often to feel guilt instead of like. Noticing when someone is being rude or unfair or my boundaries are being violated or whatever. fucked up.

I admire him hugely for not apologizing for what he said, or even technically retracting it, at any point in this statement. Instead, he takes the opportunity to make a jab at Trump's inability to put a reasonable sentence together:

Background for the non-Germans: a German professional interpreter was live-interpreting the TV broadcast of the Trump inauguration when he suddenly broke off in the middle of his interpreting and said loudly, "Tell me, how long do we have to watch this shit?!"

Of course they immediately cut his mic after that, but it was too late :D

Anyway here's my rough translation of the article excerpt above:

Interpreter Frank Deja, who committed this faux pas, has now made a statement. "I could have sworn I'd muted myself. However, in the heat of the moment, it appears I pressed the wrong button. We've gotten me away from doing any procurement (good) and put me into customer experience but then we fired everybody else who was doing customer experience and I don't really have customer experience experience so I'm winging it and I'm supposed to be marketing and sales but because I'm also doing lifecycle management I don't get commission like an actual salesperson would because it's a core function of my job and I'm supposed to be doing service assessments and contract adjustments but we don't have information about our service agreements in the contract so when I do an assessment there's nothing for me to assess against (for instance: what level of responsiveness have we promised to the client?) and I'm doing data analysis but we aren't investing in a database so I'm just ferally building one on my own and also I'm supposed to be doing content creation and making videos (including scripting, recording, acting in, and editing those videos) to put on our website but we're not putting anything on our website because the website is being redone and we're redoing it as a wordpress site so I can in theory create landing pages and education resources but the site hasn't been relaunched and also they don't know if they want me adding pages and also many people are frustratedly waiting on me to respond to emails and I'm spearheading our AI communication strategy (the strategy for how we talk to our clients about AI which starts with "do you actually need AI or do you need a powershell script?") and I'm also still the primary licensing expert in the organization and "organization" feels like an overly-generous way of describing this mess.

Anyway, I found out that I've got a new boss today. Would love to find out what my job is next.

Verifying that the firewall license is properly applied to the firewall by the techs

i am so serious when i say dark and quiet are both human rights.

i don't mean like absolute silence. obviously in an ideal community, there would still be sound and noise from people and music and work etc. but it haunts me that when i camp in the forest i can hear the howl of semi trucks on the interstate miles away. and the people who live beside it never know quiet. it haunts me that many people will live their whole lives never seeing the stars in the sky that were fully visible with NO electric light pollution as recently as my great-grandparents' childhoods.

so much of our lives is bright bright unnecessary noise. neon mcdonalds signs 200 feet in the air so we can see it from the road. led lights over billboards. parking lots lit up like sports stadiums at closed office buildings. advertisements playing at gasoline pumps. streets lined with led porch lights and decorative garden lights that genuinely threaten entire species of wildlife. music blaring outside pharmacies to deter homeless people. everything always shining and wailing for no purpose but profit and cruelty.

obviously not everything can be turned off or made quiet and i wouldn't want it to be anyway and there is a lot of nuance and room for "but what about" here, but MANY things HAVE to change because none of us are supposed to live like this and we shouldn't have to!!!
