insane that we aren't taught about sleep in school. like 75% of people in my country report poor sleep and we don't spend one biology class learning about it? here's what I've learnt from a variety of sleep courses:
your body does pretty much all it's physical rest and repair processes ('stage 4') in the first 4 hours of sleep, so if you've slept for four hours, congratulations the essentials of your physical health are taken care of
the part of the sleep cycle that takes care of your brain and mental health (REM) happens later in the night, hence why waking up too early makes you brain foggy, and why it's so helpful to train yourself to wake up about the same time every morning
we are evolved to wake up several times in the night; we don't usually remember it, but worry and fixation can make us more likely to remember these
sleep under the influence of alcohol is chemically altered and not effective no matter if it helps you sleep - it's fine to have a drunken night of course but don't use alcohol as a sleep aid to 'knock yourself out', being drunk unconscious is not sleep
the best thing you can do for your sleep is follow a routine; go to bed and wake up at the same time most days, and have a 'wind down' routine, preferably including writing down whatever's on your mind to clear it before sleep
for long-term sleep improvement, it's better to wake up at your planned time regardless of sleep quality than to get a full nights' sleep
missing a night of sleep is NOT the disaster certain scaremonger-y sleep 'experts' will tell you - 'slept debt' does NOT exist and you will recover from a missed night of sleep within a few days of normal sleep
meditation is the best alternative to sleep if you're either unable to sleep or feeling the urge to nap (napping is bad for sleep!) - guided ones can help you not to fall asleep, but literally just lying there with your eyes closed and thinking about something neutral is good
acceptance is the best way to alleviate insomnia; do something else, use meditation to supplement that rest, and accept that you aren't sleeping (often, ironically, this will cause you to fall asleep)
TL;DR: DON'T LISTEN TO THE FEARMONGERS! poor sleep isn't killing you it's okay to miss some sleep! just make sure you're resting when tired and trying to stick to a routine of night time rest
Ik I was talking about this yesterday but I really am obsessed with the idea of Viltrumites discovering human food and being absolutely blown out of their minds. Like, yeah I adore the concept of Viltrumites abandoning their empire because of their human lovers and friends, but can you imagine Kregg having street tacos for the first time?? Genuinely shifts his entire world view. We already know that Nolan really enjoys earth food seemingly a lot more than anything else we see him eat (not that we have many good examples but still) so I feel like it works for the others too.
I imagine Viltrumite food, even before Argall's cultural influence is mostly just a method of fueling the body rather than a source of pleasure, so discovering the insane diversity of cuisine on earth is a big thing for a lot of them. Most of them really like spicy food especially because they're not accustomed to capsaicin so it's very exciting for them to experience a new kind of pain that they're not already used to (I actually have a lot of thoughts on Viltrumite nervous systems but that's a post for another day).
it is human nature to weave strings of yarn, threads, or fibers together to make cloth and textiles
humans will see a soft cellulose plant material or downy animal coat and say is anyone going to twist that staple fibre in order to make a cohesive thread and then not wait for an answer
Seriously, spinning as a craft is ancient. Archaeologists recently discovered three-ply fiber that’s around 46,000 years old, blowing the previous “oldest fingers” out of the water by thousands of years.
But get this: It’s made from fucking TREE BARK. Can you imagine the dedication, foresight, and experimentation involved in figuring out how to harvest and spin that? On top of everything, it’s also lace weight. What the fuck, Neanderthals?
Article: https://arstechnica.com/science/2020/04/neanderthals-made-the-worlds-oldest-thread/
We have no proof Neanderthals told stories, but they definitely spun yarns.
Also, big ole slow clap for the article writer.
it’s very cool that neanderthals managed to get yarn out of bark fiber, but i think you might be under the impression that all tree bark is like, oak, or sycamore, or something, and only exists in ‘thick chunk of wood’ or ‘flake of wood’ form. but there’s lots of bark like elm and cedar that peels away from the tree in long, tough strips, like so:
like, look at it. it’s string. it’s obviously string. you don’t actually have to be a genius to look at this and think ‘ah! string time :)’
i’ve picked up shed pieces of elm bark on a golf course, stripped and combed out the fiber with just my fingernails, and started hand-twisting good strong cordage right then and there as i walked. you don’t even have to soak it first, though i think if you want finer/softer cordage it helps to soak, beat, and comb the fibers.
the people of the pacific northwest, where there’s so many cedars, developed really wonderful textiles out of cedar bark fiber, pounding and soaking and combing it a bit like linen. i’ve never gotten to touch any, though i’d really like to.
Many plant fibers can be used to make cordage. Here I'll demonstrate how to process different kinds of plant fibers from the inner bark of t
here’s a whole page on all the different stems and barks that can be used for cordage! how cool is that?
so, not to denigrate the skill and intelligence of ancient people, but if you already know how to hand-spin grass and hair, then spinning bark is an extremely obvious and easy thing to do as soon as you encounter the right kind of bark.
Not terribly relevant to the question of spinning bark from cordage but @roach-works mentioned PNW weaving so I have to add this because it’s too cool not to share: some of the Native nations of the Pacific Northwest also kept wool dogs! As in dogs who were bred specifically for their coats, and they mixed the dog fur with cedar fiber to weave blankets and other textiles.
As with so many things related to indigenous knowledge, many tribes had oral histories of the wool dogs but because it was barely mentioned in European accounts (and the wool dog breed is extinct) it was “unconfirmed” until relatively recently, when microscopic analysis of extant blankets in museum collections showed that many of the blankets were woven from a mix of fibers that included dog fur!
Indigenous communities in the Pacific Northwest bred little, fluffy white dogs that provided for them, both materially and spiritually.
