scientist voice: today i will be a dick to this cricket
The phrase “exposed to this spider torment” will haunt me
People in the notes have entirely misunderstood the point of this experiment and what it entails.
It’s not “proving that crickets can be traumatized”. It’s proving that *animals can genetically pass on the stress that a dangerous situation causes, and the offspring will instinctually respond to the same situation without ever having personally experienced it.*
And that’s a big deal for many things, including human psychology.
When Nazis invaded The Netherlands, local Dutch peoples were under extreme emotional and physical duress. The Nazi army took their food for the soldiers, starving the population. They patrolled the streets and harshly reinforced their new laws. Existence was horrible and some parents had to give their children away to wealthier families because they couldn’t feed them anymore. This event is known as the Hongerwinter, or Dutch Famine.
One generation later, the children of mothers who were pregnant at the time of the famine have been proven to exhibit intense reactions to stress, and heightened fight or flight responses. They also experience more obesity because their bodies are prepared for starvation.
Some of these children were never personally exposed to the famine. Their mothers gave birth after conditions had improved, or even after moving to another country. But the effects are there, and those people are now adults who can recognize this and attest that they didn’t experience something else traumatic during childhood. It was passed on in the womb.
You can read about it here: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nytimes.com/2018/01/31/science/dutch-famine-genes.amp.html
Babies born during the Dutch Hunger Winter became adults with higher rates of health problems. Now researchers may have found the genetic sw
This is called epigenetics. It’s essential to understanding how the human brain and body works. That our responses to stress can be passed on genetically. That it can show up in how we look physically, our physical health, our mental responses, our instinctual reactions. It’s especially important for people who are in therapy and need to understand *why* they act a certain way before they can actually work on it.
So no, this experiment wasn’t “haha let’s torment a cricket”. I’m not going to argue the potential cruelty of the experiment with people. I just want you to understand what it actually all MEANS.

Yeah, that doesn't prevent pregnancy.
Dfgajagakala it’s so you don’t get a UTI 😂
*facepalm* So, given that sex ed in the US is a tire fire:
Vagina-having people have a shorter urethra, which means we’re more prone to UTIs because the bacteria doesn’t have to travel as far to get up into your bladder and cause a problem.
Which means if you’re exposing your bits to bacteria (as with sex), peeing will flush out bacteria in the urethra. (Urine isn’t actually sterile - that’s a myth - but you’re *supposed to* have a little bit of bacteria - that’s how bodies work. But it still flushes things out that shouldn’t be there.)
Oh! You should ALSO pee after you masturbate, especially if it involves penetration with fingers/toys/etc
So I’ve blocked like five transphobes on this post, which I feel should have been relatively uncontroversial.
If you’re one of the people saying “You meant ‘women’”, fuck you. I meant “people who have a vagina, regardless of their gender or lack thereof”, and you can go fuck yourself with a cactus.
And you should pee afterward, so you don’t get a UTI.

Rest In Peace big Jack Charlton, England legend, world cup winner. Irish hero.
yeah, google it America/Canada ;)
This was England’s Michael Jordan, or Wayne Gretzky , he was that famous in the whole of UK, but especially in Ireland (south)
I remember the feeling of euphoria when Ireland beat Romania on penalties at Italia '90. Screaming down to the phone lines to the family in Ireland who had all gathered at the one house to watch the game; I couldn't yell loud enough, run fast enough, or jump high enough to express my joy.
It's hard to explain to my non-Irish friends what this man meant to us. At the time, other than a few decent boxers over the years, we were shite at all the international sports and our local sports were just that, local. Jackie changed that. Under the guidance of Big Jack, we arrived on the scene. We weren't going to be winning any of the cups any time soon (if we're being honest, and we still aren't), but we weren't the joke we had been before. We were the decent team that could upset your World Cup dreams.
So, thank you, Jackie Charlton, for everything. You were the friendly uncle to an entire nation, and we will miss you so much.
just because it “fits” doesnt mean its comfortable or sustainable stopppppppp this shit
There are two main factors at play when someone says that a condom is too small: (1) the band size is too small & (2) the condom is not sustainable
The band is at the base of the condom. It’s latex is made thicker here than the shaft and is, therefore, less elastic. The band keeps the condom secure so it does not come off mid-insertion and so penial fluids do not leak from the condom. To do this, the band has to keep a very tight grip on the base of the penis. This is the main complaint from people using condoms too small for them. The shaft’s plastic can stretch comfortably, but the band is not so lenient and uncomfortably or painfully squeezes the base of the penis.
Condoms in use experience a lot of friction. For a condom’s shaft or band to be stretched farther than it was intended weakens the latex. The band and shaft are then at risk of being broken from the friction. It fitting does not mean it is sustainable.
If your partner says a condom is too small, believe them and cease from doing anything that requires a condom. If your partner says a condom is too small but is trying to pressure you into unprotected sex, kick them out the door.
Thaaaank you please read the above they make large and XXL condoms for a reason and it’s not to stoke men’s egos
A former… friend suggested I try a size or two larger, and yes, they do work.
Yep. At first, I thought that condoms were supposed to be that tight. I’d seen those “condoms can fit on a two liter bottle so quit your complaining,” I had no basis for comparison because dudes don’t talk about that shit, and no one wants to be that “HURR HURR GUESS I NEED A MAGNUM XL” guy.
Now wear that condom on your arm for a while. Ten minutes at least. Still got sensation in your arm?
One of the many failures of sex ed in this country is the notion that there’s only two types of condom, “fits everyone except those elephant-trunk-cock freaks” and “for elephant-trunk-cock freaks or lying braggarts” (and yes, there’s implicit shame in the idea of people needing non-”regular”-sized condoms and the genesis for such is pretty likely rooted in some really nasty viewpoints about certain groups of people but I’m digressing).
But penises come in a LOT of dimensions, and not all of them fit right in a “normal” condom. You don’t need to have a monster down there for a condom to be legitimately painful and/or break mid-act. This can leave a lot of people legitimately unawares that it doesn’t have to be like this. (I was, early on.)
Condom too tight? That’s a real problem for the reasons pointed out above. But it’s a solvable one at most drug stores, which generally have a broader (ha ha) selection than your Walmarts or Targets. Or suck it up (ha ha) and go to an “adult boutique” (a proper one) where they’re likely to have even more options and let’s be real here the people working at these aren’t gonna give you Looks over condom selection. Or shop at said boutiques online if you REALLY need to avoid the in-person thing.
And if you think you’re gonna be doing things requiring condoms, HAVE YOUR OWN. Yes, even if you personally don’t have a penis. Buy a box of large-size as well just in case.
And don’t let anyone give you guff over it, and don’t let anyone pressure you into unprotected sex because of condom size.
For the record, even if you’re doing things that don’t involve a penis at all, condoms are good to have around. They make great dental dams on the fly, keep toys clean, and keep body parts clean if your partner is using their hands. :) Also, keep some non-latex ones around in case you or your partner has a latex allergy. Trust me, there are few places worse to have that allergic reaction. o_o
Willy wrapping wisdom!!
maybe someone will find this useful.
Also, Not everyone is okay with using condoms, Girls can have issues with condoms as well. The spermicides that are used may irritate and cause yeast infections and allergic reactions. So if your girl says no condoms, this might be why.
Open and honest conversations about Sex with your partner are important, and if you can’t talk about it, then you shouldn’t be doing it.
Also, there are condoms you can buy according to the size of your penis in comparison to vegetables… it sounds weird at first but this could be a great resource if you’re unsure about buying larger condoms.
https://www.dezeen.com/2015/08/27/guan-hao-pan-love-guide-condoms-packaging-different-vegetables-penis-girths-correct-fit-size/
And guys. Don’t buy super large to massage your ego. Trust me on this. There is nothing sexy about spending twenty minutes digging around inside your partner’s body looking for the damned thing.
The trip to the clinic is quite a mood killer, too.
be responsible, respect your partner, buy the size that fits and carry a couple of spares.
And if you’re the person bothered by spermicides, be the person who carries the spermicide-free condoms. Or stick to sex that doesn’t put a dick inside anyone’s nether regions, if you really don’t want to wrap it up.
Respect yourself and your partner enough to talk about it, choose the safe and comfortable option for both of you, and stop risking disease. Guys, if it’s your favorite body part, treat it like that! You don’t know where that’s body part has been or what’s been in it, wrap your dick up before you stick it in.
And as with all of the above, and this is something that can sound glib, BUT, if you can’t talk about it, you’re (probably) not ready to do it.
If you are with someone and don’t feel you can speak up about any of the above (or anything else?! Like what gets you going, etc.), ponder why that is. Is it the person, the timing, the act?
If something is warning you off, maybe decide if this the time/place/person/thing for you and your partner(s) at that moment.
There are lots of ways to have a safe fun time. And sometimes you may just want to assess what that means for you, whether it’s a trip to the 24 pharmacy to get a different size, material, etc. condom, a trip to the couch for a snuggle, a change in positions/actions, or heading out the door.
Be safe, have fun, communicate your desires and it’s ok to change your mind. And if someone is trying to communicate their comfort and desires to you, try to be respectful and listen. Unless they are pressuring you to something you are unwilling/not wanting/uninterested in/unsafe to do in which case get out and get out soon.
At the start of working from.home due to COVID-19, I would take my regular coffee breaks at 10am. I'd sit on my couch and cuddle Tosio (my cat) for 15 mins. Except on Thursdays and Fridays when I had standing 10am meetings.
Well, Tosio got into the habit of cuddling at 10am and started joining me for those Thursday and Friday meetings, the first 15 minutes of which I'd conduct with my arms full of cat.
She started to associate the pre-meeting hold music and/or the phone on speaker with cuddles, and now she comes running for *every* meeting I have.

This Was Some Weird Shit…
Yesterday I was sitting outside reading a Leonard Cohen biography, and was at a point where the author was describing how Leonard was taking LSD as he wrote Beautiful Losers (no surprise there) when out of the sky, a small fish dropped onto the page of the book. Perhaps this is a sign that I should go to Greece, take acid and write the great Canadian novel?

Hard same.
Is there anywhere in the world that's managed to handle COVID well and has not made mandatory mask wearing in public (or where it was already the norm)? I feel like everywhere in the world that has managed to deal with it well has and not doing so is an obvious blind spot in our COVID response =/
~~~~
Off the top of my head, British Columbia, Australia, and New Zealand would all seem to fit the criteria of never having public mask wearing a norm, never having made it mandatory in public, and thus far all three are generally considered to be handling COVID well. AFAIK, here in BC (and from what I have read from news articles/epidemiologists from Australia/NZ) the focus has been on developing highly efficient contact tracing systems (IIRC as of now virtually all positive tests here in BC are able to be alerted AND had all contacts traced within 24-48 hours), encouraging outdoor social gatherings vs indoors, and physical distancing. More on BC specifically, mask wearing has only really been encouraged by Dr. Henry when physical distancing is not possible. Just from my anecdotal experience I would say less than half of the people I see walking around outdoors are wearing masks, but when I go indoors (stores, transit, etc.) it’s somewhat higher (maybe 2/3rds?).
New Zealand hasn't made masks mandatory for the public, although it was recommended, especially for those in high risk groups. Testing & contact tracing are widespread.
Essential businesses such as supermarkets installed shields to protect checkout staff, in addition to providing hand sanitizer & maintaining strict social distancing.
Taiwan has also been very successful. They implemented a tracing system almost immediately, and did daily checkups on everyone who needed to isolate for 14 days upon entering the country. They encourage social distancing but they never had to shut anything down. My friends there continued to go out to coffee shops, restaurants, and pubs the entire time.
