Given the most recent chapter and the foreshadowing discussed in this post it does seem increasingly like the architects of the Pact actually wrote it into the world in some way and breaking it badly enough will have some kind of severe consequence. I would imagine Iguin and their crew know that, so I wonder whether they’re trying to circumvent the consequences or whether they’re basically accelerationists who are trying to speedrun the consequences and build a new world in the ashes?

the reason why i think so many alloromantic people outright refuse the idea of "aromantic subtext" being a legitimate thing is that people view aromanticism as inherently shallow. to a lot of queer fandomites, "aromantic" is what they make the side character they don't really care about, so they don't have to bother coming up with actual analysis of their interpersonal relationships. it sucks, because aromantic narratives in fiction, intentional or otherwise, are worth exploring, analysing, and appreciating.
I think an underrated Dad!Beldaruit moment is how enthused he is about the Palmdragon Teacup Qifrey gifted him:

I do wonder exactly how bad the Noz Incident was - when the village chief brings Olly to the Great Hall he says that Ghodrey has been left short of adult witches, and look, I’m sure every extra hand helps when you’re living in the snowy North but to lose enough people that you’re actually running short and need additional people for the town to function (or possibly to service neighbouring towns) suggests quite a lot of death. I’m looking forward to finding out more this arc, I really hope we get more details on what happened.
I was rereading Chapter 14 in preparation for tomorrow’s WHA episode and something jumped out at me in the section where they’re talking about the tests in the Pentacle of Proving:
This may just be a me problem, but I had always thought that the Librarian’s Trial was the Third Test? But it actually isn’t, the Third Test is called the Query of the Qui Vive and gives you the right to attempt the Librarian’s Trial if you pass it - so the Librarian’s Trial sits outside the main witch testing structure entirely.
I think that’s a really interesting detail, especially paired with the sentence describing the trial, “the key shall come to one whose path is right”. What exactly does ‘right’ mean in this context, and how is it determined whether one’s path is right or not? I do wonder whether this trial is somehow aimed at weeding out witches who would go into the Tower of Tomes seeking forbidden magic - that seems to be the most obvious definition of the ‘wrong’ path given the context of Pointed Cap society.
Given all of that, I do wonder whether Coco will even end up completing the Third Test or whether she’ll skip it and complete the Librarian’s Trial without permission. Perhaps there’s some kind of consequence for that, but then again Qifrey seemed to think that she’d be able to make it into the Tower with him distracting the lake guardians in Chapters 37 & 38, so also maybe there isn’t? I think that it’s highly unlikely that Coco will ever become a Brimcap at this point, but given all the people she wants to save from forbidden magic she’ll eventually need to look into the forbidden spells on her own terms, and the Third Test seems to be symbolic of Pointed Cap gatekeeping of knowledge.
Another point against Coco making it to the Third Test is that its winter now, and so Qifrey’s dream/premonition in Chapter 36 must be something which is going to happen soon.
Everything points to some kind of big shift happening for Coco (and Qifrey) soon, probably at the end of this arc, and I personally think it’ll involve at least Coco leaving Pointed Cap society behind and setting off on a third path…..but who really knows at this point! anything could happen!! one fear.jpg!
Because of the importance of hats in WHA to demonstrate one’s allegiance and stance with regards to magic, I try to pay attention to when characters are or aren’t wearing their witches hats during pivotal/emotional moments, and good news for anyone who likes Luluci:
her Knights Moralis cap comes off here in Chapter 80 while she’s defending people against Easthies, and she never puts it back on. In fact, the last time we saw her in Chapter 88 she still wasn’t wearing it despite the fact that the crisis was over and she had more than enough time to go and retrieve it.
So anyway, I think that resignation letter is being drafted as we speak.
hello locked tomblr, I have a question: I've seen several people say that judith deuteros is canonically black, is there something I've missed that indicates that? tamsyn muir's out-of-book character descriptions aren't strictly canon but she's said she imagines both judith and marta as tongan. I know there's a history of melanesians, aboriginal australians, and torres strait islanders being referred to as black, does that also sometimes apply to tongans and could that by why?
Hello! I’m a New Zealander and short answer: no, I’ve never heard Tongans (or any other Polynesian groups) referring to themselves as black. I think Judith being ‘canonically’ black is a misconception arising from what you mentioned in the tags, i.e. that she’s described as having dark skin and wearing her hair in braids. I get why that’s the first image that comes to mind for an US American reader and of course people can headcanon Judith as black based on those characteristics, but it does irritate me a little when people assert it as a canon fact.

"Racialised" is much better than PoC but I've been leaning a lot on the concept of racial markedness. Because that allows us to make statements like "the name Jamal is racially marked in USA". Rather than saying something like "Jamal is a PoC name", a nonsense statement, saying it's racially marked in USA allows us to contrast with societies like Albania or the Arab countries where the name Jamal is ordinary, thus unmarked.
It's a concept I've kind of imported from linguistic analysis; saying a speech pattern is more or less marked does not really allow us to avoid the subject of who's doing the marking. A statement like "womens' speech is more marked in Lakota" necessitates that we understand that it's the Lakota who are marking womens' speech. A foreigner can't tell the difference and probably doesn't understand why it would thus be weird to see a man using speech patterns associated with women, in the same way an Albanian wouldn't understand why USA people would think Jamal is a Black name.
You! You get it. In my view, if someone is saying "racialised" or "racially marked" without acknowledgement of context, they are doing it in a way that is gramatically incorrect.

I think med student Joy could have a backstory involving having someone close to her die a long, drawn-out death, maybe someone she had to be a caregiver for. In the first episode, the show has to give us the broad strokes of these new characters and set up their arc for the rest of the season, and I thought it was quite pointed that they gave her two comments about not wanting to suffer/see other people suffer a painful death:
“Who doesn’t love torturing the elderly?”
“Quick and painless. We should all be so lucky.”
that kind of backstory could also go some way towards explaining the detachment/lack of empathy we saw from her in ep 1.
