Concept: I finish school. The job I work isn’t my dream job but I enjoy doing it greatly still. It pays enough to cover everything I might need. My bills are never overdue. Money is not a thought in my head. I have a place to live. So do my dogs. It is nice and warm, I have some plants, my bookshelves are full, my sheets are always clean. There is time to read at the end of a day. I read a lot. Thinking is a good thing. I meet up with friends regularly, old and new. They love me. We make memories. I have nothing to be ashamed of. I travel a few times a year, always different places. The places I see steal my breath away. The people I meet teach me of life. They are good. There is no war. The sea calls to me and pay visit. I am independent. I am content.
we are such a sad generation. the dream is a modest and decent life.
And still, it feels unattainable.
You know? I actually prefer to think of it as regaining sanity after all the delusions of grandeur older generations had. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a normal, decent life with just enough, and tbh it’s their fault we think there IS something wrong with it.
I wanna be famous, but like how voice actors or authors are famous. I wanna be able to go to conventions and sign stuff and meet people that are way cooler than me but somehow like my work and feel famous but then drive out to Robertitos taco shop for lunch in my Nissan Cube and not have anybody recognize me as I scarf down my chicken burrito and spill hot sauce on my shirt.
me: this scene is so boring i wish i could write this other scene i’m really excited about instead
brain: you can
me: explain how
brain:
Seriously I think this is one of the biggest reasons people get stuck writing a story, and I wish it was one of the first things creative writing teachers told their students. That you don’t have to write scenes chronologically, you can write whatever the hell you want, skip scenes, and then come back. I’ve been writing non-chronologically for a long, long times, and seriously I don’t know how people can write their stuff chronologically.
In fact, writing non-chronologically have extra advantages that can help make your writing stronger:
If you write non-chronologically when you go back to “fill the gaps” you actually actively work to build connections between the scenes, because you have to go from A to B and you know, so the scenes actually connect, organically, you are not just adding stuff.
You know where the story goes, so when you go back to fill the gaps you’ll find out that it’s easier to come up with the stuff that’s in between, you have a clear goal writing. This is helpful to me because I don’t do outlines (unless it’s general ones for very long stuff), because I personally find that they don’t help me come up with scenes organically. So if you don’t do outlines writing non-chronologically is a good way of paving the road for your story, of knowing where you are going at every moment.
Also! Writing non-chronologically will give you a better sense of the structure of your story, and what’s more it will help you have a stronger structure, because you set the high points (the scenes you’re excited to write) clearly.
(pfft, talk for another day but: those scenes you don’t feel like writing? the ones you want to skip? they probably shouldn’t be in the story and you should learn how to write around them)
honestly tho that scene in the incredibles where mr. incredible sees the names of all the old super heroes that used to be his friends / that he knew from Back in the Day and how every one of them has been killed by syndrome is such a chilling scene for so many reasons
like for one, everyone he knew is dead at this point and has been killed on the same island he’s at now and two, its heartbreaking bc that means that almost every hero wanted to try out being a hero again despite the laws against it and wanted to try and help someone out and relive their glory days, only to be straight up murdered like fuck that scene is just so fuckin intense
I think the core of that scene for me is, when you’re insane like me and you go through it frame by frame, you can work out that Gazerbeam defeated the omnidroid twice - the only super we have enough information to confirm did so. I always wondered about his body in the cave, how and why he got the password… But it makes sense. This thing goes haywire, gets an upgrade, and goes haywire again? He must have been hella suspicious! So he does what any good superhero would do - tries to get to the bottom of what’s really happening on Nomanisan Island. During the process he’s clearly caught and wounded but has just enough time to get himself somewhere he can leave a final message, just praying that the next super to come along will find it and break the cycle. Gazerbeam is my hero.
Incredibles 2 has a lot to live up to
All of this and…
I’m just realizing that the name is No Man Is An Island???? As in, everyone needs someone to depend on and connect with, no one is ever completely alone or should act all on their own.
Also Gazerbeam probably has X-ray vision–so he not only survived long enough to defeat the Omnidroid, he had the ability to see Syndrome entering the password.
Holy guacamole! I should pay more attention, I don’t think I got any of that stuff!
does anyone think about the fact that now mr. incredibles has to live w/ the fact that all his friends getting killed by syndrome could have been avoided if he had just been nicer to syndrome from the beginning
^I was thinking that from the beginning reading this and was shocked it went through so many comments before anyone pointed that out.
Syndrome waited until his machine was almost ready to go before asking Bob to come to Nomanisan. He also was surprised to find out that he was married to “Elastigirl”, which means he likely built his list and went through everyone else before finally deciding it was time to kill Bob.
Also, Syndrome literally didn’t find Bob until the start of the movie. He found Frozone and was stalking him. If Lucius hadn’t hung out with Bob, then Frozone was going to be the next one lured. There’s literally a scene of Mirage realizing that the guy in the car with her target is Mr. Incredible. He wasn’t going through the list, he was stalking and finding every former Super he could, luring them to the island, and then killing them, for the sake of improving his robot. Finding Bob was just a happy accident, and Syndromes obsession with him meant that upon finding a bot that could beat Bob, he figured he’d hit perfection and was ready.
and like, let’s be real here in the intro Buddy was crossing the line the second he showed up, Mr. Incredible mentioned he’d been very nice to Buddy, via signing a ridiculous amount of autographs and doing pictures and stuff, and that he was not going to risk a childs life as a sidekick (albeit in less words). Buddy literally showed up by breaking into his car, and then stalked him all evening until he was arrested. That’s disturbingly obsessive behavior, there’s no amount of niceness that would stop Syndrome, it was an impossible situation. No amount of nice was going to appease Syndrome, the second he faced any sort of rejection from Mr. Incredible he was going to lose it and go supervillain. After his arrest he should have gotten put into therapy, but yknow, set in like. the 50′s. so it makes sense he fell through the cracks when the cracks were a goddamn canyon. Don’t victim blame Mr. Incredible.
reblogging for the last comment because blaming mr incredible for the deaths of his comrades is honestly such a weird take and i dislike how it’s framed as “fact” when it’s not. it’s syndrome’s fault and syndrome’s fault alone. full stop. he murdered them because he was selfish, entitled, and obsessed with mr incredible to a fanatical degree.
You know what’s really great
In the beginning when Mr. Incredible says, “Go home, Buddy. I work alone.” He’s holding up Bomb Voyage
In Syndrome’s flashback, he’s looking down on him, no bad guy in sight
Do with that info what you will
oh
damn
I don’t want it; I don’t need it.
this scene is even more creepy when you realize Spirited Away was a metaphor for the sex industry in Japan
OH FOR FUCK’S SAKE!
NO IT WASN’T, YOU JACKASSES!
“Totoro’s about dead girls!”
“Spirited Away is about sex!”
You know what I hear?
“Maybe if I make up something that sounds smart, people will think I’m smart, even if it’s a complete fucking lie!”
Hayao Miyazaki is a man of values. He’s a man who believes in the innocence of childhood and has a wonderful imagination. He believes in simplicity, kindness, the beauty of nature, and the old ways. He draws on these beliefs and his personal experiences when he makes movies.
Spirited Away was made for some friends of Miyazaki’s. Specifically, the ten-year-old daughters of some friends he invited to stay at his vacation home. It’s fairly common for Miyazaki to decide that he’s going to make movies targeted at a specific age group. Ponyo is for five-year-olds. Spirited Away is meant for ten-year-old girls, but enjoyed by a much wider audience.
I repeat, SPIRITED AWAY WAS MADE FOR TEN-YEAR-OLD GIRLS.
The bathhouse? Not a brothel. Based on a bathhouse in his home town, which he thought was a place of mystery and wonder when he was a kid. That scene where the bathhouse staff has to clean the polluted river spirit? Based on Miyazaki’s own experiences of a town coming together to clean up a river. This scene? It’s about Chihiro not being greedy, because Chihiro is a positive role-model for ten-year-old girls.
The themes of Spirited Away are courage, strength of character, and individuality. ESPECIALLY individuality. That thing where Yubaba takes away peoples’ names and changes their species? That’s her taking away their individuality. Chihiro’s parents are now pigs, not people. Haku’s name has been shortened so he forgets who he is. When Yubaba changes Chihiro’s name, the only Kanji she leaves spell out “Sen”, the Japanese word for “one thousand”, meaning Chihiro is just another pawn of Yubaba’s, not her own person.
You want to seem cool and intelligent? Talk about the movie’s actual themes. Don’t make up this shock-value bullshit for attention.
You stupid motherfuckers.
i’d like to draw everyone’s attention to this portrait of a dog that’s in bella swans bedroom
i’d like to remind everyone that this dog portrait also appears in the music video for chandelier
i love when my preschoolers pretend to be talking on the phone bc if u leave them to their own devices and observe they just start saying things they’ve heard adults say into the phone like “hello i have an appointment, i’d like some rice”
the news is bad sometimes
Okay but what’s the phone
As advertised:
thats what cain used to kill abel
Okay but for real think of the possibilities.
People in remote areas (both recreationally and living) - hiking or dangerous areas if they’re lost, hurt, or scouting ahead
Homeless people
Disabled people (to alert for help or contact vital services
Areas of extreme poverty (see all above)
Lost people (either urban or rural) able to call for help
Somebody close to death able to record all final thoughts (either injured, terminal, trapped, or unable to have constant medical care)
Children always able to call for help
Abused people - hiding a phone without worrying about it needing to be recharged
it isn’t bad at all, we’re just so used to phone companies trying to make paper thin phones with no battery life cause it’s good for business
