Every day I wake up and get faced with news stories like "good news! they just made it illegal to grind endangered birds into bonemeal!" and in the comments someone is like "this is oversimplified, and only partially true: after decades of campaigning and like 3 of them left in the wild, we've gotten them to make it illegal to snatch specimens of this specific one species of super-endangered birds right out of the wild and throw them alive into the bonemeal grinder. They're still allowed to do that in every other condition except these specific parametres."

And someone else comments in, in outrage: "Ugh pretty fucking typical that they care about ANIMALS more when it's still 100% legal to do this same thing TO CHILDREN."

And some third person comments in "actually that is also illegal in almost every place in the world. The only countries where they have no law against throwing live children into bonemeal grinder is the US and Israel."

i'd just like to say it again for the people in the back: ethnicity, race, and nationality are DIFFERENT THINGS.

ethnicity = shared cultural characteristics including but not limited to language, food, music, dance, religion, and shared ancestry; learned through cultural transmission; can be changed throughout one's life provided that the ethnic community one is trying to join accepts them

race = a bullshit system of human categorization based solely upon looks; literally invented by europeans trying to sort humans like we are all different species; can also change over the course of someone's life if the necessary conditions are met (see: my great-great-grandparents being marked as non-white "Hebrew" immigrants in 1904 and then passing away right as Eastern Ashkenazi Jewish people began to fully assimilate into whiteness, eg the post-war period; also see the treatment of SWANA Muslims before and after 9/11); also a legal system in the US wherein those deemed "white" receive certain privileges denied to others based upon race science

nationality = one's country of origin and where they hold citizenship; those are sometimes the same and sometimes not; see for example a naturalized US citizen whose nationality might be both Dominican and American

now. why would someone get race and ethnicity, in particular, confused? you see, from the 16th to the 19th centuries, the word "race" both referred to the bullshit system and also to ethnic groups. additionally, in the post-colonial context, some ethnicities are based upon the system of race that was imposed upon settler colonies (for example, Black Americans, who were forcibly removed from their original ethnic communities and, in a show of remarkable resilience, created new and beautiful cultures). this has led to a lasting confusion on the two concepts.

because i need you to know that ethnoreligious groups are real. and i need you to know that jewish people are an ethnoreligious group with subethnicities (like Ashkenazim, Sephardim, Mizrahim, Persian Jews, Ethiopian Jews, etc). but that none of these groups are the "real Jews." and that we do, in fact, meet the definition of a distinct ethnic group with some similarities and differences across the many subethnicities that are contained within our ethnicity. we accept converts, who then become ethnically jewish, because ethnicity is not all about blood ties. AND ALSO. someone can be ethnically jewish without being religiously jewish, because they may share in the cultural practices that jewish people do and (usually, in this case,) have jewish heritage. such a person does not need to be Israeli to be ethnically jewish. "Israeli" is a nationality, not an ethnicity, at least right now.

just because, to the eye, we may appear to be different races does not make us "just a religion." some religious groups are not ethnoreligious groups, including (most) Muslims, Christians, and Buddhists, but that does not mean that jewish people are included in that category. thank you for coming to my tedtalk.

important addition: having Jewish ancestry and being ethnically Jewish are two separate things. You can have Jewish ancestry but not be ethnically Jewish (for example if your grandparents converted and your family no longer has any ties to Judaism), and you can be ethnically Jewish without having Jewish ancestry (which is the case of converts).

people keep using « ethnically Jewish » to mean « I have vague Jewish ancestry » and it drives me up the walls, and it also dilutes the meaning of giyur.

My one boring tip to anyone in their 20s is to resist the temptation to rot in your room every time you get a free moment. Dismiss any neuroses you have about going outside and "being perceived". Be a dictator about it, plan your hangouts like they are binding commitments. No excuses! Go to the bar with your friends. Be kinda hungover at work. Socializing is like exercise; even if you don't feel like you want to, you should still do it because it's good for you.

socializing works a little bit like a car battery and alternator. if you continue to make yourself go out and do things, your social alternator makes it infinitely more manageable for you to continue to go out and do things. if you let yourself be completely idle for too long, the alternator doesn't get to keep charging your battery and eventually it runs completely down and it's nearly impossible to go out and do stuff with a dead social battery. you can always get it jumped again by a friend who's willing to do so, but as with a real car battery it's kind of a whole Thing and the first time out with a jumped battery is still really shaky and weird and anxiety-inducing and all of this could've been avoided if you'd just gone to the arcade or whatever

The rich can relocate when the bullets start flying. The rich can rebuild if their house gets bombed. The rich can get top-notch health care if they're injured in an attack. The rich can buy their way out of being conscripted to fight. The rich will be the first to get aid if food or power or water or medicine runs short.

The poor can't, and won't.

A revolution must eat a lot of poor people for every rich person it consumes.

This does not mean "just accept the status quo." But it does mean that you need to think real hard about whether the actions you support are actually helping to create a more equitable society, or are just about you venting your anger and frustration and feeling like you're Doing Something.

Also, peaceful and just societies don't tend to rise from horrific violence and brutality. "Burn it all down and Utopia will rise from the ashes" is just the wishful thinking of an apocalypse cult, and should have no place in serious discourse.

To be honest I’m not sure the tolerance Western civilization has had toward the Jewish community is going to hold much longer.

Talking to young teen boys (who are very online but not yet self aware enough to know to hide their opinions) I see the consequences of the subtly antisemitic rhetoric that’s been propagating in our society. In the past year, someone did the nazi salute to me, jokes about Israel as an illegitimate state, conversion attempts, holocaust denial, and so much more, just for me mentioning that I’m Jewish. Many of my friends have had “free Palestine” shouted at them simply for walking down the street with a yarmulke. A thirteen-year-old boy I know had to hide from a group of screaming boys chasing him screaming “free Palestine”.

You’re hearing the gripes of “antisemitism” and casting them away, assuming they are a bludgeon against all legitimate criticism of the state of Israel. And there are genuine critiques of the way the country treats Arabs. But think about if the ideas you’re spreading have a historical root in stereotypes and violence against Jews. Think about who you’re platforming, and whether their motivations include the destruction of the 8 million Jews in Israel (which is a genocidal motivation btw), or a better life for all people in Israel and Palestine. STOP PLATFORMING AND PROMOTING ANTISEMITISM! Unlike most in my community I’ve talked to, I refuse to believe that you are doing this on purpose. You are not responsible for the actions of others, but you are responsible for the ideas that come out of your mouth and what you post.

So if you’re not doing this on purpose, change it, before this wave rises back into the violence and segregation that we just progressed from.
