I've known since I started the comic that no matter how carefully I plan a chapter it always veers off the rails within five pages of storyboarding, but I never clocked why that happens until last night
An initial plan for a part of the story is basically a bulletpoint list of Cool And Interesting Bits. Specific interactions or moments that work for what I want them to do and build up/chain together in a sensible order. I'll even sometimes do a sketch page of just a bunch of highlight moments from an upcoming arc or chapter that are already very visually clear to me to get it all straight in my head.
The problem is what's between those bulletpoints. In the planning phase, it's basically Nothing. It's basic rearrangements and characters on pause until the next Important Thing happens to or around them.
When storyboarding, all that in-between nothing needs to be transmuted into More Cool And Interesting Bits. Characters moving from point A to point B don't just silently and obligingly wait for the camera to cut back. The space between Big Moments is full of potential for More Big Moments, I just never know what they are until I lay out the first pass of Biggest Moments.
And each of those new intermediate Big Moments has the potential to change or rearrange everything that comes after! The knockdown effects only grow more prominent with time! Some dislodged Big Moments can find a new anchor point in the new plot timeline, but it's always a whole project to figure out how and where they can fit, and how much they have to change first!
all because apparently I can't just tell a story that is Cool Big Moments In Order With Nothing Of Consequence In Between

transcript below the cut.
Some other bangers;
"Jack of all trades, master of none" ... "but ofttimes better than a master of one."
"Blood is thicker than water." "The blood of the covenant is thicker than the waters of the womb."
"Money is the root of all evil." "The love of money is the root of all evil."
there's also "pull yourself up by the bootstraps" which conservatives are oh so fond of saying
bootstraps are, well, straps on your boots. you cannot physically pull yourself up by them, and that's what the original phrase meant. "pulling oneself up by the bootstraps" is meant to be an impossible task
"Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery that mediocrity can pay to greatness."
The second part really matters.
"Curiosity killed the cat" ... "but satisfaction brought it back"
"Absence makes the hart grow fonder" ... "Until it makes the hart go yonder"
"The early bird gets the worm" ... "But the second mouse gets the cheese"
"Great Minds think alike" ... "though fools seldom differ"
“My country, right or wrong" ... "if right, to be kept right; and if wrong to be set right.”
I was high off my ass last night and had this dream where I was in this dense ass forest and sitting there was a tall woman. She was so tall I couldn’t see her face but she was wearing gold and I was like “uh…hi?” And she said “I made you, do you know that?” And I nodded and she was like “I hear your thoughts. Why do you hate my creation? Why do you try to destroy yourself? I made you perfect as you are. Please don’t break my heart”. Then she started crying and it flooded and I woke up with fucking heart palpitations like what does it Mean™️????
polar opposite of this post
inspiration struck and would not let me go until i drew this
Concept: The Earth is safe, it is our Creator. The Ocean on the other hand, that’s Satan’s fucking den.
I suddenly remembered this post out of nowhere, and spend three hours that I should have spent doing homework looking for this.

“i am a monument to all your sins” is such a fucking raw line for a villain it’s amazing that it came from halo, a modernish video game, and not some classical text or mythos
classic texts have nothing on the crazy people come up with in modern times tbh
“I survived because the fire inside me burned brighter than the fire around me.”
– Joshua Graham, Who Is A Fallout New Vegas NPC, Something Most People Throwing This Quote Around Don’t Realize
“If the world chooses to become my enemy, I will fight like I always have.”
– Shadow the Hedgehog in what is widely considered one of if not the single worst game in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise
this is the source for this text and it haunts me on a regular basis
“Pick a god and pray.”
-Fredrick from Fire Emblem Awakening
Huh, it’s almost like art isn’t just fine art…
this is my addition to this ever growing list of raw quotes originating from unexpected sources
#discovering that the profound is lurking behind the absurd#just waiting for the chance to peek through like sunlight through the clouds#is one of the best things in life once you start to notice it
this is a beautiful way to put it and i’m gonna cry abt it
this post has gotten so much better since the last time I saw it
“There are so many stories where some brave hero decides to give their life to save the day, and because of their sacrifice, the good guys win, the survivors all cheer, and everybody lives happily ever after. But the hero… never gets to see that ending. They’ll never know if their sacrifice actually made a difference; they’ll never know if the day was really saved. In the end, they just have to have faith. Ain’t that a bitch?” - Red Vs Blue
“Sometimes you will lose a friend. Sometimes even your best friend. Maybe you grew apart. Maybe you get into a fight. Maybe they’re destroyed in an electromagnetic pulse. These things happen. It’s just a sad, sad, sad, sad, saaaaaaaaaaad, sad, sad, sad part of life. But you know, I think the very best thing about friends, well, the thing most people forget about anyways, is that no matter how many friends you do lose. You can always make more.” - Caboose, RvB
“It’s one of life’s greatest mysteries, isn’t it? Why are we here? I mean, are we the product of some cosmic coincidence? Or is there really a god watching everything? You know, with a plan for us and stuff. I don’t know, man, but it keeps me up at night.” - Grif, RvB
the suffering never ends

I’VE REBLOGGED THIS BEFORE AND I WILL REBLOG IT 20 TIMES MORE
a month or two ago i had this dream that I was in an Uber with Michelle and Barack Obama and some other man and we were talking about the BLM protests and the other dude asked why people were responding with “All Lives Matter” and Michelle said “people don’t want to acknowledge that some tragedies exists because it destroys their paradigm of society. if they acknowledge these issues then they admit the failure of a world that works in their favor” and then i woke up
like i still think about that a lot
Everyone’s like “those Germans have a word for everything” but English has a word for tricking someone into watching the music video for Rick Astley’s Never Gonna Give You Up.
English has a lot more words created for very specific phenomena! It’s not just rick-rolling. Language is always evolving and it’s super interesting! Here’s a list of hyper-specific/untranslatable words in English.
Some of these are fucking wild.

this is like just a fourth of a whole musical medley addressing that you can’t live like the simpsons anymore. harsh :(
It really hits hard that what was affordable and seen as an average life back in the 90s is now nearly impossible for us to get.
The other major instance of this is comparing the original Rugrats series to the reboot. In the original series Grandpa was living at DiDi and Stu’s house because he was retired, in the reboot Didi and Stu are living in Grandpa’s house because they can’t afford their own place.

Get DRINKED (don't tell the Philadelphians)
concept: a death god that is actually surprisingly supportive and on the side of the good guys, supporting actions and promoting policies that will lead to the kingdom growing and thriving instead of being destroyed, because the more the kingdom grows, the more people there are, and the more people there are the more people will eventually die, and when you’re an immortal god of death, you know there’s no need to rush. you’ll get them all in the end
i like how the responses on this post are cleanly split between “hey this is a great story idea i love it” and “this is absolutely terrifying”
Yes. A Death that is kind, and patient, and inevitable.
A Death that need not fight against you, that will often fight for you, because why not? It will gather you home eventually. Why not enjoy you first?
A Death that treasures those who fight it most ardently. That loves healers and defenders and survivalists and necromancers and mad scientists and immortal gods. That lets them pour everything they are into fighting it, denying it, adoring every desperate scrap of strength and will and brilliance and raw determination poured out against it. That catches you when your strength is done and all your will and brilliance run out, that gathers you close beneath a warm, dark cloak, and whispers well done, oh child, you were magnificent, well done.
A Death who will not seek to hasten an inevitable end, who will chastise those who seek to hasten it for others in Death’s stead, who will slowly and patiently plot and sow and siphon away from the great monsters of the world. Because who are they to hasten Death’s domain, who are they to deny Death its time and its place, who are they to cut short these vital glories that illuminate it so? Who are they to presume upon its will, that is so much larger and so much longer than theirs?
Who are they to call, and presume that Death, of all beings, should obey?
A Death that is not a hunter but a gatherer, who is always and eternal, who loves you, and can afford to wait. A Death who will fight for you and defend you, who will place its hand upon those who would speed you to its embrace, who has no need to rush you, only to greet you when you call.
A Death who is kind.
And patient.
And, before all and above all,
inevitable.
Beautiful
There is a reason they wield a scythe, not a sword. They harvest what is ripe, not take what is still strong.
