sometimes you will see a joke circulate within a fandom and at first it's all fun and games but then the slow and terrible realization starts to seep in that this will become in fact a widely-accepted way to read a specific situation between characters that were subject of said joke and there is nothing you can do about it but to watch the horrors unfold in real time

look idk if the tumblr heated rivalry discourse is as bad faith and stupid as the twitter discourse but people don't understand hockey, romance tropes OR the situation RR was working with when she wrote the books (with the expectation that every one could be the last one). but please, please i need people to understand several things (this is about the hockey, because i don't read that many romance books and defer to those more educated in the genre).
You don't have to be the captain to be the best guy on the team. It's not a commentary on your skill as a player or necessarily your role in the room. You think people aren't aware that Nathan MacKinnon, a man who has dodged the C his entire career, is absolutely the best player on the Avs? He's only got an A, but he overhauled the entire diet of the team and somehow did not get murdered in his sleep. Now, if Shane doesn't have an A for the first year or so, it's entirely possible he would chafe and try to talk to refs during games because he's been allowed to do it almost his entire career, but I'm pretty confident he would be given the A soon enough.
Ottawa is a playoff contender by the end of TLG! I keep seeing posts being like "Rachel has Shane suffer and he's forced to go to a loser team and never win a cup again because she's racist" which uh okay putting aside everything else there, Ottawa is very famously in the playoffs at the end of TLG! Yes, they're the lower-ranked wild card facing MTL as the #1 seed, but they're on their way up, and of course with Ilya and Shane they'll be even better next season. If they're a wild card, they're not at the bottom of the league!
"Shane will get paid a pittance and he'll be reduced to a trophy wife." I have seen this exact phrasing and I need people to examine their prejudice about making Shane the "wife" just because he bottoms, but also.... bro. He will still get paid many millions of dollars, and there's no way Ottawa is going to force him into an eight-year deal at a much lower price than he's worth, because they know he could be a game changer (pun not intended) for the team. Yeah, he may get paid less for a year or two while they find the money and shuffle around some pieces. It's not the end of the world. Connor McDavid took a pay cut to stay with Leon Draisaitl, and he's literally the best player in the entire league. (And yes, Connor McDavid is white, and it would be different if we were talking about Nick Suzuki but even so!)
Being on the second line is not actually a death sentence. Evgeni Malkin would have been the star player of any team that took him if Sidney Crosby hadn't already held that spot in Pittsburgh. He has played second fiddle to THEEE Sidney Crosby for his entire career, but they're still known together as the Two-Headed Monster for a reason. Unrivaled is going to be Hollanov's sidgeno era, and Shane being 2C is going to take them to the Stanley Cup because having depth is essential!!! It isn't humiliating to be on the second line. Also, trying to litigate who is "better" at hockey is quite obviously not the point? They go tit-for-tat with every award and milestone, that's the point. Being 2C doesn't mean he's worse at hockey than Ilya who is 1C!!!!! Someone's gotta go second unless one of them wants to play wing (which we know they do in the PP unit)!!!!! There's lots of pairs of great players - Crosby and Malkin, Poulin and Stacey, McDavid and Draisaitl, etc - and part of the magic is that they become something bigger than the sum of their parts when they play together. This is a team sport!
Shane has already had the most successful career anyone has had since the beginning of the salary cap era. Obviously this is fiction, but since the introduction of the salary cap (2005), the players with the most cups are the pens who were there for all three sidney crosby-captained cups. Ilya has one (1) cup. Barring a catastrophic injury, Ilya will always have fewer cups than Shane, so I'm not sure why Shane stans are so mad? I mean trying to pit the love interests of a romance series against each other is an absolutely nonsense way to engage with the text but. whatever!!! Also shout out to Connor McDavid, who is cursed to be the best player in the league and may never win a cup. Hockey analysts do not look at his number of cups (0) and think he's a worse player for it! They look at his number of cups (0) and think "extremely weird career move to stay in Edmonton when you would have every single team in the league falling over themselves to get you on their team, but whatever polycule he has going with Leon Draisaitl and their wives must be worth it".

• Forces everyone (not just kids) to upload a government ID or submit to a facial recognition scan to create a social media account or post online, even on educational sites like Wikipedia
• Force parents to send even more sensitive information to Big Tech companies to “verify” custody in order for a minor to create an account (think: sending a birth certificate to Mark Zuckerberg to let your teen create an account)
• Allow unsupportive parents to lock queer and trans youth off the Internet, restricting access to life-saving community and information with zero recourse
• Expand the Trump admin’s surveillance capabilities, making it easier for them to persecute people organizing protests, monitoring ICE, and criticizing the administration
• Cost Massachusetts tax payers enormously, as the legislation is clearly unconstitutional and would face legal challenges.
• Specifically harm undocumented folks who use social media to warn communities about ICE activity and raise money for family members
• Fine smaller and non-profit tech platforms like Mastodon and Bluesky out of business, further expanding the monopolies of Big Tech platforms
It is one of many of the worst pieces of digital surveillance legislation right now in the states.

The craziest things in this fandom aren't the fun paranormal headcanons it's actually the things that have happened to real hockey players that people sprinkle in. There have been things that broke my suspension of disbelief enough for me to dnf a fic that I later found actually happened to a real NHL player. This is a formal apology for that.
Look, Elementary made a load of really smart adaptational decisions with the Holmes canon, but re-interpreting the Baker Street Irregulars as a group of hacktivists who delight in making Sherlock do weird and stupid shit is probably one of the best.
Found out I was short fabric on another project and decided I wasn’t going into town to pick it up, so I pulled a jelly roll out to keep myself busy until I went back to town.
Figured I do a quick quilt top, you know, just throw something together.
And then I made two blocks of the forty eight needed for this Harvest quilt and boy howdy.
So we have this bin of partially used bobbins for the long arm. And we only have so many bobbins of course.
I decided that since the quilt top was so colourful, I’d put plain flat black cotton the back and use up some of these bobbins, making the quilting on the back really stand out.
Holy shit did it work or what! I love it, of course LOL
I used a medium purple on the top so it would fade into the patchwork and not show up too much on the background. The quilting pattern is called Pink Lemonade and it is one of my favourite quilting patterns.
I didn’t have any left over border fabric, so I found a nice blue that matched with that print and made it my binding. I debated using purple, but couldn’t convince myself to do it.
The blue looks good though, from the front and the back.
