Modern elevators will not fall unless they are extensively sabotaged.
In 1857, Elisha Otis, of the Otis Elevator Company introduced the Otis Elevator Brake, now a standard component of all elevators. He advertised it by getting in an elevator, riding it to the top, and then ordering that the cable supporting the elevator be cut.
When the elevator is held up by the tension in the cable above, that same tension holds the braking mechanism in a position where it doesn’t touch anything. But if the tension goes away, a spring is released which causes the prongs of the elevator break to thrust outward, locking into a row of teeth running down the side of the elevator shaft and making the elevator completely immobile until repaired.
You can be trapped in an elevator, but you cannot fall in an elevator.
This is actually really comforting thank you
And if you’re also worried about the cable snapping each cable needs to be able to hold up the weight of an elevator at 40% capacity. Your standard elevator has 8 of those cables. You are very very very safe in elevators and like the above commentor said there are teeth along the elevator tracks that shut the second tension is released and the elevator starts falling.
i have a horrible misogynist rooster who only likes blonde hens so i always have to make sure i have 2-3 yellow hens around so he doesn't run anyone ragged. i didn't know this was a problem someone could have but i've had macklemore for eight slutty, slutty years and he's been overly obsessed with the blondness level of his lady friends for the entire time with no sign of slowing down so, like. props to him for sticking to his guns.
SIR, PLEASE,
YOU CANT JUST CASUALLY LEAVE THIS IN THE REPLIES AS IF THIS ISNT A CRUCIAL ELEMENT OF THIS HARROWING STORY

I know OP is presenting this as a historical example of “Defund the Police” working and being reasonable & doable actually, but when I see this story juxtaposed with the modern left’s attempts to decouple social services from the police, what I’m seeing is some of the reasons the left was successful at doing this kind of thing in the past and why it is failing to do so now.
Even just on the level of messaging, compare “Freedom House Ambulance Service” vs “Defund the Police”. One sounds like it’s about freedom, it’s about providing, it’s a service. The other frames itself as defunding, taking away infrastructure that—whether you personally agree or not—people broadly view as a service. There is nothing about “Defund the Police” or “ACAB” etc. (whose underlying critiques I broadly agree with) that intuitively suggests to anyone hearing it for the first time that what we’re suggesting is reallocating funds to empower and provide a better, safer, demilitarized kind of infrastructure. It’s just “get rid of this thing that most people feel like they need”.
We find THE most dystopian, tear-it-all-down, shockjock asshole-sounding ways to express a point & then spend so much time defending that choice & explaining “no no actually it’s really sensible” (often with an air of superiority, as if to say “you’re so stupid for thinking the dystopian-sounding thing i said isn’t actually dystopian”) that we never seem to get around to do the damn thing. rather than notice that we’re alienating our allies & learn from this, we just dig our heels in & refuse to adjust.
Why can’t we just say what we mean? Demilitarize the Police. Fund Welfare. Reallocate City Funds. Provide Social Services. If you don’t want to sound like you’re trying to strip apart societal infrastructure you don’t have to! If you’re trying to communicate that you’re trying to provide a service… you can just say that up front. We don’t have to marry ourselves to the **ABOLISH** ** DESTROY** **SMASH** **DEFUND** framing.
But it’s not just PR or tone or whatever.
FHAS also didn’t wait for permission or demand to get rid of the police-run ambulance first; they saw where the police-run ambulance was lacking and they filled the gap themselves. they they provided a solution. the only reason they got the trust & funding from the city government in the first place was by proving they could do it better.
also, as much as this story may illustrate an example of fixing the system from outside it, it still required cooperation with & working alongside the pre-existing system. they used donated police vehicles. the police called them in to help. they didn’t say “fuck the system” wholesale, burn it to the ground, & make something better in the ashes. they sprang up from the community, ensured their quality of service was better, & offered their help.
We’d get a lot farther if we actually learned from & emulated our past successes instead of just using them as rhetorical defenses for our current failures.
This morning I had like the lesbian equivalent of that part from the Brian David Gilbert cooking video about getting called Boss haha
Important! Your pet's RFID chip number might have been disconnected this week.
The Texas-based company, Save This Life, has ceased operations and that could become an issue for pet owners.
Is your pet chipped? They should be. Do you know who made the chip?
Pet RFID chips are so small that there's really only room on them for a serial number. When your lost pet is brought to a shelter or a vet's office, they can scan the chip, read that number, and then type it into a program that draws from a series of linked databases to find your name and phone number. That's how they find you, and tell you that Silly Lilly von Wigglesbottom has gone wandering, and she's safe and sound, and would you come get her, please?
Texas-based Save This Life, which provided chips to vets and shelters all across the US, has all at once and abruptly gone dark; their database is just gone. Their customers were not given warning and so did not know to change their registration to another company. A lot of animals have basically become anonymous now.
If you don't know what company you've been using, call your vet's office and ask what pet chip number they have on file. If the chip number starts with 991 or 900164, it's probably a Safe This Life chip.
If it turns out yours is one of the affected cases, the chip itself will still be fine! There's no need to add another, or anything like that. You'll just need to transfer the number to another company, and your vet should be able to recommend the one that they like the best.
