beauty requires openness. it asks you to let things reach you, to soften enough to be moved. it’s not naive to see beauty everywhere—it’s a skill, a form of intelligence, a kind of quiet bravery. because it is so much easier to critique than to create, to detach than to engage, to dismiss than to love.

let yourself be affected. let yourself find things beautiful and let that be enough. life is not asking you to be cool, sitting on the sidelines and nitpicking everything. it’s asking you to see life and experience it fully.

The solstice being on Father’s Day kinda put the stop on celebrations over here. Doubly so because my husband and I went to a cookout that turned out to be a Father’s Day celebration that we weren’t aware of on Saturday. My dad (that I didn’t have the relationship with) is gone. My grandfather is gone. The only person I wanted to celebrate Father’s Day with is my stepdad and he’s almost 2000 miles away with my mom and grandma.

I am trying to be gentle with myself and not feel bad for not celebrating yesterday but it is a tough feeling to shake. I know it is normal for grief to hit on those days, I just wasn’t expecting it to be so spicy.

The fact that there are gods with disabilities make me so emotional. Hephaestus, Tyr, Hodr, Odin and other disabled deities just prove that being disabled is a vital part of the human experience, not a deviation from it, and that concept alone is so moving. Just like there are deities for specific human experiences like fertility or war, there are also deities with disabilities, which just proves that we have just as much of a place on this earth as mothers and warriors do. The idea of that has genuinely pulled me through some hard times.

Rebirth

I'm doing a bit of magical housekeeping today. I've disposed of all my expired oils and am washing out the bottles they were in so that I can re-use them. I also am trying to plan Flying Ointment pt. 2 - this time with less beeswax. My first attempt turned out way too solid, so I'm hoping I can get the balance down just right the next time I make it.

I also had my first batch turn out too solid when I started making ointments. I had a lot more success when I switched from olive oil to grapeseed oil. Also, I have found that measuring by volume and measuring by weight make for very different experiences and success rates somehow. I have better success with weighted measurement than volume at a 1:4 ratio. Can't wait to see how it ends up.
