Honestly, anon, I’ve thought about this a lot over the years and I still struggle to imagine what would’ve happened if Prue and Paige had met and what their relationship would’ve been like. There are so many possibilities and factors to take into consideration. If you ask me on another day, you might even get a different response, but here are my thoughts on this topic.

If Piper had died instead of Prue in All Hell Breaks Loose and season 4 started in the exact same way, I think Prue would’ve reacted to Paige the same way as Piper did. Recently, I’ve become more and more aware of the ways that Piper was turned into Prue 2.0 from season 4 onwards and this is what demonstrates it most for me. Piper’s reaction to losing Prue and finding Paige is exactly how I’d imagine Prue’s would be. The only difference is that Prue would’ve been worse. As the eldest sister, Prue felt it was her solemn duty to protect her sisters. She shouldered the burden of responsibility and was devoted to keeping them safe. If either one of them had died on her watch, the damage it would’ve done to her would’ve been irreparable. Prue would not have been grief stricken,  she’d feel like she’d failed, that it was her fault and she would’ve been adamant that she was going to do something to bring Piper back, no matter the cost. If that failed, she’d turn her attention to revenge. All of this would’ve made it very difficult, if not impossible, for Prue to accept Paige or even remotely open herself up to the possibility of having another sister. Prue would be enraged - at the injustice of Piper’s death, at herself for failing Piper, at Leo for not being able to heal Piper, at the Elders for not doing more and at Penny and Patty for lying to her about Paige her entire life. Her emotions would be overwhelming and because of her stubbornness, it would most likely take her longer to push past that than it did for Piper. The one thing that would bring Prue around to Paige would be her being in danger. Knowing that The Source/Shax was after Paige would make Prue determined to stop him. That’d most likely result in a transference, whereby her anger and grief became an unhealthy obsession with hunting Shax down and killing him for revenge. I could really see Prue going completely rogue like Leo in season 6 with Gideon. She would stop at nothing to avenge Piper’s death.

Prue’s resistance to Paige wouldn’t be because of Paige, it would be because of herself - because of her grief and identity crisis as the eldest sister. But I think once she started to accept Piper’s death, she would’ve gone in the complete opposite direction and embraced Paige fiercely to overcompensate for the loss of Piper. This would involve her taking Paige under her wing, being overly protective, teaching her about the craft and acknowledging that Paige was an innocent. Paige would be Prue’s second chance in a sense - a chance to be the eldest sister again and to forge an eldest-youngest sibling relationship more positive than the one she had with Phoebe. Prue’s growth and foresight from her experiences with Phoebe would allow her to be more patient and understanding regarding Paige’s recklessness and impulsivity. It would also improve her relationship with Phoebe because she’d turn to Phoebe for advice and guidance, and to keep her grounded. Phoebe would fulfil that middle sister role perfectly. I think Paige’s inferiority complex with Prue in canon would’ve transformed into her viewing Prue as a role model if Prue had survived. Prue’s natural flair and dedication to witchcraft would’ve inspired Paige and allowed her to develop her skills and powers at an even faster and greater extent than she did in canon. There’d definitely be a power struggle between them, particularly in the early days, because both of them are stubborn and independent. In the original dynamic, Prue was used to having control and making decisions for the group, but Paige wasn’t the sort of person to sit back and take orders. Overall, I think the two of them would’ve butted heads a lot and had a very rocky start, but eventually it would evolve into a beautiful dynamic. Prue would’ve taken more time to guide Paige, not just as a witch but as a person. In season 4, Paige was a lost soul. She was an orphan without a family, she was working a job that she believed in but wasn’t satisfied with and she had a lot of ‘what ifs’ and ‘maybes’ going on. Prue would’ve helped her with this. Furthermore, their similar personalities and approaches would instil them with a mutual respect and understanding, whilst their strength and dedication to witchcraft would lead them to be a powerhouse duo.

Regarding their similarities, Prue and Paige’s main similarity was their perspective on magic. They saw their duties as witches as important and they were devoted to saving innocents. Prue and Paige considered being a witch a proper job as much as any other traditional job. They always went that step further in practising or perfecting their craft, and never wished away their powers or perceived magic as a burden. They were also both incredibly strong willed and operated on their gut instincts, which were nearly always right. They had a creative streak - Paige with painting and Prue with photography - and this is something that would bond them. Prue and Paige were also the two sisters out of the four that felt the least traditional. By which I mean they never seemed as concerned with motherhood or marriage as Piper and Phoebe did. They were more driven by their careers and being a witch (and/or whitelighter in Paige’s case). I’d also say that Prue and Paige were natural leaders. Their drive, determination and skill when it came to witchcraft meant they were full of ideas and actively thrived on their work as witches. Both also had the confidence, intelligence, power and empathy to take the lead. Obviously, this is the one similarity that would’ve caused tension between them as they grappled to be the leader. However, I think it would’ve led to growth for both of them. Prue would’ve learned to let go a little more and to trust Paige to take over, and Paige would’ve learned to respect that although she had ideas and drive, Prue was the more experienced and wiser sister.

Overall, Prue and Paige are a complex dynamic to analyse because it’s all based on guess work. The fact that I feel like I know both characters quite well does help to some extent, but not enough. However, I think if you look to Piper and Paige’s relationship you’ll see almost a carbon copy of what Prue and Paige’s relationship would’ve looked like. That’s really because the sister dynamics on Charmed aren’t shaped by the characters personalities as much as they are by the sister hierarchy. Allow me to explain.

There are two main sister groupings:

1. Prue, Piper and Phoebe 2. Piper, Phoebe and Paige

Within these two groupings there are always 3 sister pairings: eldest-middle, eldest-youngest, middle-youngest. Now let’s look at the pairings that fall under these headings and compare.

Eldest-middle

Prue and Piper

Piper and Phoebe

Both dynamics are characterised by mutual love and understanding. These two pairings get on very well - their relationships are loving, affectionate and are best friends as well as sisters. The eldest has a level of responsibility and burden that comes from being the eldest, that only the middle sister can fully appreciate and understand. The middle sister is fully allied with the eldest and supportive of what they do and how they do it. This leads the eldest sister to lean on the middle sister to be in her corner and to keep her grounded. For the eldest sister, the middle sister represents consistency - somebody who will always be there. The eldest sister feels protective about the middle sister whom they feel a deep bond to and at various points the eldest sister feels she has let down the middle sister in her duty to protect her (1. Prue lets Piper down in Coyote Piper and 2. Piper lets Phoebe down in Queen of the Underworld). Overall, the eldest-middle dynamic is a plain sailing dynamic of two best friends who are extremely close and rely upon each other.

Eldest-youngest

Prue and Phoebe

Piper and Paige

Both dynamics are characterised by an initial clash of personalities and power struggle. The eldest struggles with the youngest’s recklessness and lack of responsibility. The youngest finds the eldest judgemental, mean and too serious. As a result, the eldest sister chastises the youngest sister, pushing the youngest sister further away, making her want to rebel and go off on her own. Nonetheless, despite surface level disdain, the eldest sister is fiercely protective of the youngest and the youngest seeks the eldest’s approval and respects them immensely. Tensions prevail between the two; they disagree on how to approach situations and struggle to work together without clashing. However, over time, the eldest and youngest are able to push their differences aside, empathise, develop patience and appreciate the other sister for how she is different to herself.

Middle-youngest

Piper and Phoebe

Phoebe and Paige

Similar to the eldest-middle, this relationship is one between friends. However, it operates on the basis that the middle sister understands the youngest sister where the eldest one fails. The middle sister probably finds the youngest sister’s naivety irritating at times, but mostly they find it endearing and accept them for who they are. The middle sister strives to bridge the gap between the eldest and youngest, as a result the youngest relies on the middle sister as her greatest ally. If the youngest sister is in a tight spot, she will turn to the middle sister for non-judgemental support and advice.

So you see, the sister dynamics follow this same formula no matter who happens to be in the duo. The nuances of these sister relationships do differ, but the foundation of them is rooted in these outlines which were established by Constance M. Burge when she first created the show. Therefore, Prue and Paige would fall into the eldest-youngest and have a similar dynamic to Piper and Paige or Prue and Phoebe. Although I personally believe Piper and Paige is more reflective of the relationship Prue and Paige would’ve had, particularly in the beginning.

We need to talk about Yamato, Kozuki Oden, and the nuance of trauma-informed identities.

Okay, I’m breaking my silence on the endless Yamato discourse because it feels like two completely different sides of the fandom are watching two completely different shows, and we are completely losing the actual narrative tragedy of this character in the process.

Let’s talk about why reducing Yamato’s identity solely to a modern, real-world trans narrative actually skips over some of the most heartbreaking, beautifully written psychological trauma Eiichiro Oda has ever put on paper.

1. The Contrast: Okiku vs. Yamato

If you want to see how Oda writes a beautifully realized transgender character, look no further than Okiku.

Kiku is Kiku. Her identity comes entirely from within—she is "a woman at heart." She isn't trying to copy a specific historical figure, she isn't roleplaying, and she isn’t using an identity to escape her own name. Her identity remains consistent regardless of her trauma, and the narrative respects her completely for who she is.

Yamato’s situation is fundamentally different. It is entirely external and borrowed. It doesn't stem from an innate, personal feeling of "I feel like a man," but rather from a desperate, literal proclamation: "I want to be this specific hero, and that hero happened to be a man."

2. The Trauma Suit of Armor

Look at Yamato’s upbringing. It’s horrific. Kaido didn't just abuse Yamato; he completely rejected and crushed Yamato’s actual self. Imprisoned, chained with exploding handcuffs, starved, and beaten for decades—Yamato had no space to safely develop a personal identity.

In that environment of absolute despair, Kozuki Oden’s journal wasn't just a book; it was a lifeline. Oden represented the exact opposite of Kaido—absolute freedom, heroism, and strength.

To survive the psychological toll of Kaido's abuse, Yamato essentially discarded "Yamato" (the despised child of the Oni) and wore Oden like a psychological suit of armor. By literally stepping out of her own skin and trying to inhabit a dead man's ghost, Yamato could endure. Oden wouldn't break.

3. The Tragedy is Supposed to Be Jarring

When Yamato looks at a literally grieving, deeply traumatized child like Momonosuke and says with a straight face, "Since I am Oden, that makes me your father!"—it is meant to be jarring. It’s played for a mix of dark comedy and deep tragedy. It shows just how disconnected Yamato is from normal social reality due to two decades of isolation.

Yamato is hyper-fixated on a roleplay because it is the only way she knows how to express her desire for freedom. Yamato literally doesn't care about the logistics of "manhood"—she cares about the legacy of Oden. If Oden had been a woman, Yamato would be emulating a woman.

Why the Fandom is Constantly Fighting

Look, it’s completely understandable why the LGBTQ+ community latched onto Yamato. Media representation is scarce, and when you see a character use male pronouns, get called "son" by the main cast, and literally walk into the men's bathhouse with Luffy and Brook without the story making a cruel joke out of it, that feels amazing and validating.

But when we focus only on the social outcome (the pronouns, the bathhouse), we accidentally erase the textually canon reality of Yamato's backstory. The official Vivre Cards listing Yamato’s gender as "Female" (while Kiku's is "Female at heart") isn't Oda or the editors "backtracking"—it's a confirmation of what the text already told us: Yamato is a traumatized individual clinging to a heroic persona.

Conclusion

Yamato’s journey isn’t a standard modern transition story, and that’s okay! It’s a tragic, compelling narrative about a survivor of severe abuse who had their identity stolen by their parent, and chose to borrow a hero's identity to survive.

The real triumph of Yamato’s character arc moving forward isn't going to be about confirming a gender label—it’s going to be about Yamato finally taking off the Oden mask, dropping the ghost of a dead man, and figuring out who Yamato actually is.

I love the transfem sanji headcanons and fanarts and fanfictions to pieces, but I think there is something so so important about him being a man who has personally suffered because of patriarchy.

Spoilers for whole cake island, and 3D2Y/marineford, under the cut

I’m sure it’s been said before, but Germa as a culture is patriarchy incarnate. The men of germa are expected to be emotionless killing machines, to the point where the king robbed his son’s of their emotions through genetic experimentation. And it’s not lost on me that Reiju still had her emotions in tact, because in Judge’s eyes women are supposed to be emotional. And Reiju had to spend her life suppressing her emotions in order to be seen as competent, for fear of being seen as just an emotional woman.

And then there’s Sanji. He’s everything Germa culture believes a man couldn’t be. He’s emotional, weak (by their standards), and soft (kind). To Judge, and Germa as a whole, those are very feminine traits, and that’s considered a bad thing. To them, being a man with feminine traits is worse than being a woman, and that’s why Sanji is abused so horribly.

It’s important to me that despite later developing a rough exterior and bad attitude, he retains these traditionally feminine qualities while still being a man.

Now I wanna talk about Kamabakka kingdom. I don’t know if the okama’s are supposed to be trans or if their drag queens or a combination of both, so forgive me if I get something wrong, but the important thing to note is that the second they meet Sanji, they essentially try to forcefem him. I think to them, his natural personality is like the ideal of femininity. Like in germa, Kamabakka kingdom sees Sanji’s emotionality and kindness as feminine traits, but unlike Germa, they see it as a good thing. Germa tried to force Sanji to give up those traits and beat the femininity out of him. Kamabakka kingdom wanted Sanji to embrace those traits but tried to force Sanji to become a woman because of them. And it works for a couple of weeks (until he sees what happened to Luffy in that one funny scene where the makeup literally melts off his face), but he’s not like them. He is not a woman, doesn’t want to be a woman, and doesn’t want to be perceived as a woman. He can love women and know he is not one.

Sanji isn’t a trans woman (canonically, but I absolutely love all the fanart and fics. This little analysis has no bearing on my love of non canon depictions of Sanji as trans). He is however, gender nonconforming in the context of the culture he was born into. I think in that brief time he went along with the okama’s ideas of him being trans, possibly had a lot to do with the doubts germa’s ideals cast on him about his gender identity. Germa taught him being emotional and kind were woman things, so with the Okama’s trying to convince him that he did feel that way, he might start to think, ‘well maybe I am a woman’, but the second he sees something that reminds him of Luffy, all that confusion goes away and he immediately goes, ‘no I am a man’.

Because Luffy doesn’t try to force Sanji into any kind of gendered box because of the traits that so many people he’s known have seen as feminine. Luffy doesn’t try to force him into traditional masculinity or try to force him to become a woman. To Luffy, Sanji’s kindness and emotionality are his best traits, and those traits are not connected to gender at all. Within the strawhats, Sanji has a freedom of gender expression that he didn’t have anywhere else (the baratie didn’t force anything on him but they were all kind of macho men so I don’t think Sanji would have felt super comfortable expressing his full range of emotions).

I think Sanji as a gender nonconforming man, fits better with his character narratively than sanji being transfem. Everything with Germa is a demonstration of how patriarchy is damaging to both men and women and nonbinary people. I think him being a man is very important to his relationship with the strawhats, and how he found acceptance with them as a man with a lot of traditionally feminine traits (in addition to him being emotional and kind, there’s also the fact that he’s a cook and is the only man on the crew to bathe everyday, specifically, he bathes as often as the girls). With the strawhats he is able to express himself fully without fear of judgment or of a label being forced onto him.

I guess my main point is, Sanji is an example of how patriarchy can hurt men, and how deconstructing traditional ideas of gender norms allows people to live more honest and fulfilling lives.

Sidenote 1: Luffy giving Sanji a space for freedom of expression is perfectly in line with his ideals of freedom.

Sidenote 2: Sanji’s sees woman as naturally emotional (a good thing to him) and kind because the only people he knew with thise characteristics besides himself were his mother and sister.

Sidenote 3: I sometimes see transmasc Sanji headcannons, which I love because they fit so well into his story.

If the emotion mods on Sanji activated

I think I kind of threw my thoughts on this out in one of my other theory posts or in a reply post instead of a dedicated post and I can't find it, so I'm going to just write that dedicated post here now.

A long time ago I analysed the emotion part of the Germa mods [part 1, part 2, part 3], and I feel like the way it's phrased makes it unclear what extent of emotions they do still have. It might be overthinking, but Oda-sensei was known to play word games as red herring, and the verbal misdirection sometimes just doesn't translate well in English.

Anyway, based on my observation and previous analysis, my conclusion is that the mods will not change Sanji's character all that much. Like, that mods are not designed to alter someone's memory. Even if his ability to have mercy or sympathise with people is removed, Sanji is not just going to forget Zeff's teachings.

Exhibit:

Unless Oda-sensei later reveals that this is because Sora's medicine did work on all 4 brothers, then for the time being these scenes show that the modifications do not erase the ability to feel some sort of "concern" or "affection" for someone they consider "important".

What I think will happen is that in fights Sanji could and would kill the enemy and then not even feel bad about it. That's it. He is not going to suddenly use his knives as swords, he's not going to beat up girls. He's also not suddenly going to be unnecessarily aggressive/cruel to the Strawhats.

Plus, if Yonji's reaction to Reiju kicking him is any indication (he doesn't try to kick her back even when he's angry), I think "evil" Sanji is not even going to be extra mean when he does get angry, e.g if Luffy steals food. Like, even if it's just because Judge had really educated his children with a very strong sense of age-based hierarchy that makes Yonji not hit Reiju out of respect, then that means this "mercilessness" still has boundaries. It's not going to make Sanji suddenly go "I will destroy anyone who annoys me".

In Onigashima, I think Sanji was just overreacting because he himself doesn't know yet what was the extent of the emotion modifications. All he knows is that it makes someone "heartless/merciless". Plus, Queen's invisible attack on Osome made him panic because he thought he did it without noticing.

In the long run I still don't know what Oda-sensei plans with this. There is a lab in Elbaph, and he went out of his way to get Lilith to survive and plus a Vegapunk clone as backup. Maybe he will get the modifications altered later, since I think Sanji wouldn't want to be cruel to enemies either.

I just think it's not something to worry too much about, and Sanji himself said as much. He told Zoro he doesn't need that kill thing anymore at all, and he's been using the modifications casually over and over like it's nothing.

I made a theory post about this ages ago, but just separating this part for information purposes (I don't know, maybe if someone wants to use it for fanfic)

It kind of always fascinated me that Sanji and his siblings all use different levels of honorifics. I don't know if there's an explicit why or if Oda-sensei was just being funny.

Shirahoshi also uses different honorifics than her brothers when referring to King Neptune, so it could be that it's really just "Well I want them to be cuter, while the other siblings should be more formal".

Though, adult-Sanji not referring to Sora as mother is so... Is there a reason for this??

When it comes to manga, rules and logic are kind of whatever, man. Typically in other manga that I've read, the royalty and nobles would all use the -sama honorific across the board. The "-ue" honorific is usually for samurai, if it's a Western/European-based kind of world setting they don't tend to use -ue. Only when there's some kind of character who comes from a "Japan-based" kingdom.

Crossed Wires: Mis-performed Infatuation vs. True Perversion

So, I was looking through the Thriller Bark arc and got to Sanji’s fight. 

Now oddly, as a young woman, Sanji never super bothered me here. Not sure why really. I saw his words as unacceptable but him as ultimately harmless. 

But I can see where this section causes a lot of people an issue with his character (an issue I feel he is steadily maturing out of).

I’m going to try to explain how I see both Sanji and the situation.

Now, this entire situation reminded me of a quote from Bioshock where Andrew Ryan says “…the pervert who prowls the streets, looking for a victim he can ravish for his grotesque amusement.”

It was the “ a victim he can ravish for his grotesque amusement “ part that really spoke to me. It made me notice something strange about the variations of perversion in this battle. And I came to the odd conclusion that where Sanji has perverted or deviant thoughts, Absalom is the only true pervert of the two.

Now, before you rush to denounce me, let me explain.

Nami is the object of Sanji’s infatuation as well as Absalom’s obsession. Both love her body but Sanji also loves Nami because she is Nami.

Nami is just an object to Absalom. An object of beauty, but still just an object. Something for him to freely look at, touch, and own.

Absalom cares not what Nami wants or thinks. His desires alone are all that matter.

Now, switch over to Sanji!

Despite Nami being beautiful, she is not an object of beauty to him. No, she is a treasure.

And you need to take into mind what “treasure” means in the One Piece universe and specifically what “treasure” means to a Strawhat.

To a Strawhat, a treasure is something or someone more precious than words can describe, priceless and perfect, and worth dying over because it means all these things.

You can see that this is how Sanji feels about Nami from the beginning of the battle.

You notice how Sanji says “your knight”? Like always, Sanji puts himself in a submissive position to Nami. A knight is someone that serves and protects someone above them in either status or position.

He makes it clear that he belongs to her. Whereas Absalom makes it clear that he feels he owns Nami.

True perverts exert power and dominance of some level because it is all about them and their sexual needs. This is what Absalom does constantly.

Sanji does not. Sanji actually never puts himself in a position of power over any of the Strawhats or their friends.

He always puts their safety and worth far above himself. You see this all throughout the battle.

He never once gets mad about being attacked. He only gets mad that Nami was almost injured because of said attack.

He is protective of not only her body but also her purity.

He’s upset that Absalom may have done something awful, not because Sanji sees Nami as his to claim but rather because it would be an injustice and violation to Nami herself.

This is not to say that Sanji is perfect. He very much is a little deviant slut.

But despite this, he still holds to the fact that any injury or harm of any kind to Nami is unforgivable. 

This actually leads into something interesting about Sanji’s personality and showcasing how he’s a clear victim of child abuse of some kind (Which we now all know was severe physical, verbal, and emotional abuse as well as neglect.)

It took me a while to see it but as a whole Sanji has no sense of self-worth and his only confidence is in his cooking (This confidence is most likely due to how much work Zeff put into Sanji). The rest of his personality is a volatile mix of defiance and bravado.

He protects women not because they’re weak and need to be protected but rather because he’s strong and has the ability to do so. He constantly praises Nami and Robin on how cunning or strong they are. He never feels emasculated by them (most likely due to the fact that when he was little, women protected and cared for him as best they could). That may even be why he protects them now because he’s finally strong enough to repay his debt and give thanks for the help he received from the women in his life.

But I’m getting off-topic. Back to Sanji’s self-worth. He has none, always putting others before himself, and this is especially seen when he’s protecting a woman.

How much Nami, in her entirety, means to Sanji is shown in how much damage he takes in order to keep her from getting hurt. He couldn’t care less about himself because he really doesn’t care at all at this point. All that matters to him is Nami.

He protects her until the combat not only threatens harm to her but something as simple as her outfit as well.

I am feeling some symbolism here. 

Yes, he literally doesn’t want to stain her with his blood but he also thinks so lowly of himself that he doesn’t want to stain her with any of himself.

Which could explain why he never officially makes a move despite his obvious infatuation with her.

Sanji would rather admire her from afar than forcing her to be stuck with someone like him.

Which all leads into Sanji’s deviant thinking with peeping. Because peeping is so far his only offense towards women. He never claims women to be below him, he never initiates touch with women and doesn’t really claim to make any women his. He’d like to be theirs but doesn’t see them as his.

This all makes me think that he peeps because he feels he’ll never be good enough to actually be with a woman romantically or physically.

He has a bad case of infatuation on a mass scale. But due to child abuse at a very young development age, he appears to be stunted both emotionally and sexually. Leaving him with a sense of sexual immaturity where he doesn’t know how to properly act on feelings of desire or need, knowing only enough to realize it’s wrong to physically act on anything he feels.

So, how I see this battle, and other events of Sanji’s deviant thinking, is that Sanji is not so much perverted as mis-performing when it comes to his infatuation.

But, that’s just how I see it.

Aye, this is always how I’ve felt when reading Sanji’s character as well. You’ve verbalized it admirably! I’ll reblog it to catalogue it as a concrete crystallization of my thoughts on this particular matter, for future reference. I’ll also add that this is especially compelling hermeneutically because I can unfortunately relate to certain aspects of this write-up (i.e. diminishing self-worth that caused me to mishandle my first romantic relationship at times), and so I can accredit its accuracy in that regard.

Listen Sanji and kitchen talk never gets old to me. Please take into consideration the following:

1. Sanji walking around with a very, very hot pan saying 'hot behind' and dodging past Nami to plate. She obviously does not take this well and thumps him so hard the pan almost falls. He is very confused, he looks like a kicked puppy. Nami hit him and left while mumbling to herself.

2. Zoro notices how the cook weaves through tight spaces very easily, especially during battle. He doesn't understand why the cook keeps yelling 'on your left!' behind!' 'corner!' at Marines and other pirates. Or why some of them yell back 'heard' or 'got it, left/corner/behind!'. What the fuck.

3. Sanji walking around with a knife and yelling 'Sharp!' as he walks out to do whatever. Franky says he's looking sharp as always cook bro. Sanji thanks as he starts peeling vegetables or something.

4. Law hearing all of this and yells at Sanji to shut up because he just wants some peace and quiet and why the fuck are all the Strawhats so loud. Sanji apologizes because it's a force of habit after being in professional kitchens since he was eight and he doesn't want to hurt him or the crew. When Law asks for further clarification he explains 'hot' and 'sharp' means he's holding something dangerous, obviously, hot pans, hot plates, knives. The 'on your whatever' and 'corner' means he's telling people where he's coming from so there's no collisions. Law is blinking at him is exasperation and agrees that him yelling that is more than acceptable because of who the Strawhats are.

Since people are still confused about Tims dating history and over-exaggerating how big of a slut he is or saying that his type is blondes, I'm going to clear some things up.

Also, I'm counting actual canon relationships, not just random women who kissed him because I cant be bothered and some of those were grown ass women kissing a fifteen year old.

First girlfriend: Ariana Dzerchenko - Tims first girlfriend when he was fourteen was a black haired Russian immigrant who lived with her uncle. Their relationship was kinda strained because Tim couldn't tell her everything about himself as Robin and she kept accusing him of cheating on her and then cheating on him and when she tried to admit to him that she went out with another guy he fell asleep and her uncle tried to kill him and they were forbidden from seeing each other. It was a whole thing. By the end of the relationship, it was very strained and they were obviously trying to make something that couldn't work, work.

Tim technically kissed Stephanie after she saved him from getting buried alive with her dad, and went on kinda dates with her as spoiler and robin when Ariana and Tim were forbidden from seeing each other. I think Spoiler and Robin kissed during those kinda dates after Tim and Ariana were allowed to see each other again and trying to make their relationship work. Tim was going to tell Ariana but she dumped him so the whole issue was resolved.

This is the only instance of Tim cheating. Yes, it was very messy. But it was mainly chuck dixon trying to push for Timsteph to be together and force steph into a manic pixie dream role and make her seem so much more rational and reasonable than ariana and not like other girls.

Second Girlfriend: Stephanie Brown. Honestly, they were so cute together. Especially when they written by Jon Lewis. Steph starts off not knowing anything about Tim but Batman betrays his trust and reveals Tims identity to her when he goes missing. Their relationship only becomes stronger though and they lean on each other and are honest and open and Tim tries to kill someone for her. They loved each other and I loved them together. They genuinely looked out for eachother.

And then, something stupid happens.

Darla decides to kiss Tim instead of saying hey I like you when Tim has said repeatedly that he has a girlfriend. Steph was spying on Tim and runs away just before Tim cuts off the kiss and tells darla that she shouldnt have done that. This is what people also bring up for Tim cheating. but. literally.

Anyway, war games, darla dies, steph dies, jack dies, dana is hospitalised with grief and darla comes back to life. what they had i wouldnt call a relationship, especially because tim isnt in the right mental state for one right now, what with losing steph and all. And darla isnt in the right headspace either, so they didnt actually date even though people keep trying to bring up darla as a relationship.

Third girlfriend: Zoanne Wilkins. An african american high achieving girl who is on her way to harvard. I love her, and she and Tim are similar in the way that they are academically smart and inclined and shes understanding of what hes struggled through with losing his parents and getting kidnapped right in front of her and everything. She is understanding, but ultimately they call off the relationship and stay just friends.

Also weird thing with Cassie I wouldnt count because it was a grief fueled depressive spiral that was bound to end badly because they were both thinking of kon while it was happening. so i dont think they really dated

Fourth girlfriend: Tamara Fox. Tam is different because she knew Tim was Red Robin from the start and she has been involved in so much crazy shit with him i dont know why she hasn't beat him up yet. They werent really together a whole lot, but they had like a fake engagement to get Vicki Vale off their back and hey it worked. They

And then there was this weird thing with lynx who was maybe a good guy maybe a bad guy and tim broke her out of prison and they kept like getting freaky on rooftops. It was weird, but this kinda happened at the same time of the Timtam stuff. Not really dating, just a few makeouts on the roof. So cheating? If Tim and Tam were actually dating, which was really unclear.

Idk what happens in new 52 cos i just. ignore. all that.

Tim and steph are back together! In young justice 2019 at least. And they are so cute and in love.

But then they break up off panel and Tim comes out as bi and dates bernard. Its very much a disservice to this relationship that is so iconic and amazing and im not saying that tim being bi and tim dating bernard is bad or wrong, im just saying that tim and steph not having any real closure on their relationship is not good because they kind of just thrust tim into this realtionship with bernard built on nothing. but its whatever.

First boyfriend: Bernard Dowd. His friend at louise e grieve memorial, before it got shot up and the third person in their trio died. when the school got shut down, people were sent all over the place, Bernard to some rich private school and Tim to bludhaven where he drops out of school completely. They dont keep in touch, which is pretty much explicitely states in robin 1993 when bernard makes a rough estimation to darla as to where tim is. but still. its very random and kind of bland and kind of like they just forced a boyfriend onto tim to be like hey look we have a bisexual character.

I just wish there was a proper build up instead of it kind of being random. And breaking up with steph off panel. and just there being nothing of substance of their relationship. all of his other relationships show conflict and resolution. Secret identities play an issue with his ability to communicate, his inability to be honest, his grief and issues with balancing his lives and living up to expectations of a relationship. Does bernard know tim is robin? ive seen those pride covers and like i read td:r but idek when he reveals hes robin. it was a while ago but still. does bernard know what happened to darla? also why would they reunite two of the trio and not bring back darla. like where is their magic best friend? it could be so interesting to see their relationship change from when they were in high school to young adulthood but no. They had so much potential, but the execution was just oh look hes gay and has boyfriend now. theyre happy, no conflict, no substance, no nothing.

Anyway. Four official relationships. I feel like thats normal for like a 19-21 year old. Hes not that big of a cheater, but he is still messy and weird and has strange homoerotic friendships. anyway. dc bring back zoanne wilkins and darla aquista and i will love you.

Building up on bernard, he pretty much fails as a love interest in like every way

There is no real good reason to have him paired with Tim. He only appeared in six issues and none of his interactions with Tim gave us insight into who Tim was as a character or lead to any meaningful developments. The whole 'he represents the War Games era of Tim in terms of uncertainity' or 'his civilian life before losing his dad' that was used by the author, is just untrue as we never see Tim seriously appreciate his friendship like he does with say Ives, or the people at Brentwood as something that keeps him grounded or as a distraction from the hero life/normaly he needs nor do his interactions with Tim show said uncertainty like the struggle of balancing the civilian/hero life that we saw his above friends do. All of his appearances are either comic relief or a springboard/exposition for more important developments such as Tim's relationship with Darla.

There is also how he wasn't a close friend of Tim and more often than not, Tim was shown to not like him too much. At best they were casual friends and none of their interactions went beyond that. The nicest thing Tim said about him is that he "THINKS he's going to END UP LIKING" him not that he actually does so which at best shows Tim is willing to give him a shot.

At worst? Well

Yeah. The first panel is his first impression of him while the last three are the LAST interactions/mentions Tim has with him and occur after saying he 'thinks he's going to end up liking him'.

It makes no sense why Tim would even want to reconnect with him let alone date him. Tim's opinion of Bernard went from "I guess we can be friends but this guy is sus to "maybe he's not so bad and deserves a shot" to "nah screw this guy". It's telling we keep getting sold a false meta history of them being super close friends and have Bernard essentially replace Ives to try and sell the pairing.

B. Like it really doesn't do anything for Tim at all.

Bernard doesn't help Tim grow as a character, or even as a person relationship wise as Tim is still doing the same faults he did in past relationships with civilians not telling them he is Robin, keeping secrets, cutting dates/missing them, etc). but they are "resolved" by just making Bernard some ultra perfect guy who knows Tim's identity

Aka the resolution he had with Stephanie in terms of the civilian/hero life balance of having someone who knows both, so Tim is getting a balance he already had and not to mention you can't even say Tim progressed in this manner or learned from his mistakes as he never revealed his ID in the first place, so it requires no growth on his end) (never explained how he does, not to mention watering down Tim's competence in keeping his ID) so it's all moot.

Tim also doesn't progress in his civilian life at all. Like he lives on a boat and (it is said that Bernard helped motivate him to do this but never shown/explained at all and all we see is Bernard saying he likes it and the people there)? Like he doesn't even meaningfuly develop a connection with the people there aside from friendly neighbors at best. As an example There was this "subplot" of them being in danger of being evicted but Tim just doesn't care at all or do anything. Like why not use some of his wealth from his dad or something to like buy people's boats and resell them at a cheaper price so the people can stay?

The people on the boat don't even offer him a meaningful civilian connection as like I said he just doesn't connect with them and even then that civilian connection is kind of moot in the last issue when they all know his identity as Robin so that balance or finding a solution is rendered moot for the same reasons as above as he already found that balance with the Batfamily/YJ friends who know both aspects of his life and again he didn't even it reveal it to them.

Like what do they offer him? People to chill in a non-vigilante way? Like he can already do that with the Batfam/YJ and not to mention that as the series showed the Marina got involved in a lot of Robin related stuff because of Tim's ID, so it's also moot.

Another point is how Bernard for a 'relationship for Tim beyond Robin' really is a relationship where the substance largely comes from Robin. Like aside from Robin is how they got together which Bernard even states in issue 3, in the beginning of issue 7 when Bernard list why he likes Tim all the things he likes about him are reflective of his role as Robin. Like his whole trusting Tim to keep him safe, Tim being special, and Tim being his lucky charm, the examples he uses are of Tim saving him as Robin/being Robin.

And issue 7 also shows like I said above that what saves the relationship is Bernard knowing that Tim is Robin. Not to mention how he really only opens up to Tim/confides in him seriously when Tim is Robin as shown in issue 3 and 9. Hell in issue 3 when he talks about wanting to help Tim, knowing that he knows his ID, when he talks about Tim 'taking too much on his own and not asking for help and loosing himself or whatever' we know it's about Robin.

And issue 10 the grand saving moment for their relationship after the 'falling out' in issue 9 was Bernard saving the day in a Robin related mission and getting the ID reveal (but not really)

Issue 7 highlights how Tim really doesn't do anything for Bernard as Tim. Like all he does is tell him that his parents suck, he's great to make him feel better, and tell us a bunch of stuff about Bernard we've never seen before.....twice and given how the issue kept emphasizing this point (to the point where villains commented on it) and how over the top his parents/with Bernards heroic it felt generic and like the bare minimum and Tim felt like an exposition device.

Tim never really talks to him about his issues with his parents or actually substantially helps him as after Tim does the above it immediately cuts back to their relationship for cute moments. Like Bernard giving him the necklace isn't even connected to Tim 'helping' as he was gonna do that anyway.

Tim as a civilain is just the BF and the real substance comes from Robin (as it was a Robin related mission and Tim saving civilians as Bernard which lead/inspired Bernard trying to save his parents and oh look Robin once again is tied to their relationship)

TLDR: Bernard doesn't make sense as a pairing, doesn't do anything for Tim as a character nor fulfill the purpose he was supposedly brought back for

Welcome to my unpopular opinion but I am so, so tired of people and just the fandom as a whole vilifying the Drakes to an obscene amount. Like, were they the best parents in the world? No, but they weren't the abusive and neglectful monsters most of the fandom tries to write them as.

Jack and Janet were fully under the impression Tim was being taken care of when they were gone because he was in boarding schools, a responsible and logical place to put a child if you knew your work would have you traveling a lot. The only reason this wasn't true because Tim was the one to make it so. Tim was the one sneaking out of boarding schools and not telling his parents what he was doing.

Every time in the comics when the Drakes came back, Tim was excited and actually did spend time with them. We are given multiple accounts from Tim of him hanging out with both of his parents when they are back in town while Tim is being robin.

The Drakes also very much cared about Tim. The first thing Jack does when he finds out Tim was in a dangerous situation (being Robin) was get Tim out of it. Yeah, it sucks that Tim's opinions and thoughts were acknowledged, but Jack did what any loving and responsible parent would do the moment they find out their son was risking their life and doing something extremely dangerous and reckless and that's get him out of it! Jack moved Tim away from potential danger to keep his son safe. The moment Tim went missing Jack dropped fucking everything he had in terms of influence and fortune to get his son back. Is that the behavior of someone who couldn't give a shit about their son? Someone who clearly doesn't care about their safety and existence? No. It's not.

Besides, not even Tim himself vilifies his parents. Time and time again in the comics, Tim is shown missing his parents, talking fondly of them. Literally during the whole saga where Tim was traveling through time and the multiverse to find Bruce during failsafe, Tim embraces his mother and just enjoys being with her. Tim's ideal world and life is his parents being alive, it's Tim being with his Dad and Mom.

The Drakes are not evil monsters, and honestly, Tim's story and dynamic with Bruce is so much more interesting when the Drakes are loving and caring and Bruce isn't 'saving' him from his parents.
