if I wrote a dystopian novel where the corrupt evil megacorporation that controls society has a fucking smirk for a logo, my editor would tell me to use a less heavy-handed metaphor
and yet
I love this because if I were to write a literary novel in the Western cannon that described the image of an apple with a chunk bitten off, any high school English student would tell you it is a Bible reference meant to represent the source of all evil and downfall of humanity and YETĀ
Imagine telling someone that the evil corporation that makes you waste away hours because they want you to watch more ads had made their name be a clock sound. Theyād tell you itās ridiculously on-the-nose
watched a sheep-shearing demo yesterday and the sheep do this thing. where they kick and struggle and bleat as the farmer drags them into place for clipping and wrestles them onto their back. the sheep hate it so much because they don't know what's happening.
and then the farmer gets two or three clips in, and the sheep just sort of chills out, and realizes it feels kind of nice. and their coat comes off and five minutes later they're released, shorn and naked, and they go run around with the other freshly-shorn sheep. they rub their skin against the hay and the barn walls and each other, and get startled by the new textures. sometimes they get cold, so they huddle up together or get a under a blanket.
and they will get sheared this time again, next year, and they will kick and struggle and bleat again, because they won't remember how it felt. they will remember a year of being an animal that everything wants to kill, and they won't be ready for someone to try to help them.
No but the Hunger Games really said "what do you hate more- the atrocities or the people who commit them against you? Because like it or not there IS a difference. If you hate the people who commit acts of pure evil more than you hate the acts themselves, what will stop you from becoming just like your enemies in your pursuit of justice? What will keep you from commiting those very same acts against THEM when the opportunity arises? And what then? The cycle of pain and suffering will never stop. Round and round it'll go. Nothing will ever change. But. BUT. If you hate the atrocities. If you hate the vile, senseless acts MORE than you hate the people who did them to you. If you are able to see that evil is evil regardless of who does it... The cycle ends with you. No, you may never get justice. But you will never be responsible for making others, even your enemies, suffer the same crimes you have. The atrocities will never be committed by you, never by your hand. And that's the way you change the world. It's the ONLY way" and that's why I am sure it will never stop being one of the most relevant works of fiction ever created
Iām sure I canāt think of any reason that sentiment is relevant today. Coming up empty.
This is why Jesus and the Apostles preached āhating the sin but loving the sinnerā. The same attitude that had Jesus calling prostitutes, tax-collectors, violent revolutionaries, and hidebound religious leaders to change their ways and become his closest followers.
True and final justice isnāt FOR this temporary world. It can only be fulfilled at the end of such a world.
