and then the farmer gets two or three clips in, and the sheep just sort of chills out, and realizes it feels kind of nice. and their coat comes off and five minutes later they're released, shorn and naked, and they go run around with the other freshly-shorn sheep. they rub their skin against the hay and the barn walls and each other, and get startled by the new textures. sometimes they get cold, so they huddle up together or get a under a blanket.

and they will get sheared this time again, next year, and they will kick and struggle and bleat again, because they won't remember how it felt. they will remember a year of being an animal that everything wants to kill, and they won't be ready for someone to try to help them.

Like, most folks have guns for protection. Tom doesn't go down to the gun store and buy one on a whim to off himself. Usually it's because either A: he's decided that the police are slow as shit and doesn't want to be waiting minutes when seconds count, or B: he's received a threat that he took seriously.

Not least because Japan has stricter gun laws than Britain and also has one of the highest suicide rates in the world. And if that scene happened in an anime, we would assume the person the gun belongs to is caught up in something alarming.

BBC Sherlock John Watson, as well the original character, is a war veteran. A medical veteran. There's no reason to believe that he wouldn't be familiar with guns, particularly hand weapons, as a med vet. It's entirely possible that his desk gun exists entirely to communicate the difference between a typical UK citizen and a war vet citizen as someone who is both okay with guns and has easier theoretical access to them.

While I'm not opposed to the idea that the writers intentionally want to portray him as suicidal, I don't know if you could say that him owning a gun is enough evidence of that alone.

There is only one truth, the truth, and we just live in it. We can choose to tell the truth, or tell a lie, or shut our eyes and ears and try to live in ignorance, but it doesn't stop reality from being there.

What happened to using phrases like "my perspective" or "my understanding"? That is entirely reasonable and relatable, and communicates your experience without implying some strange subjective absolutism. "My truth" implies that you're lying or you're delusional.

I'm not saying everyone knows all the truth - everyone is wrong sometimes, and there are some facts of life that are entirely mysteries to everyone and cannot be discovered or quantified in our lifetimes, but that doesn't mean it isn't the truth. "I'm wrong about some things and still learning about lots of other things" = accurate. "Maybe you don't believe I can manifest myself into a billionare without working a job but that is my truth" = asinine.

Honestly, I respect this. Is this a very dumb rich person problem that he threw money at? Yes, absolutely.

But one of my hats is safety coordinator for industrial research, and something our safety department asks us to remind our researchers regularly is that safety doesn't stop being a thing just because you're DIYing it at home. People very often make very stupid decisions when it comes to projects they are doing in their own home. (And industrial research scientists collect home projects like magpies collect shiny things.)

It would have been easy for this guy to try to climb up there himself or pay some random schmuck to do it or ask some friend whose kid rock climbs to do it. There is an entire category of tragic stories associated with people doing home improvement, realizing they need to get up somewhere high, and they or whoever they ask for help not being safe about it. But that's not what he did. He paid professionals for it, he paid a pair of them so they could be extra safe about it, he paid them rush and hazard pay, and they did navigate what would have been a dangerous task safely.

And let me tell you, there would be fewer safety horror stories in the world if more rich people and people doing home improvement behaved like this guy.

Hello. Today is the 80th day of Digital Blackout.

I want to talk about the insane inflation rate in the past couple of months and the speed at which people are becoming Jobless.

Today I saw a woman showing her recipt from the supermarket, 22 items for over 8 million toman (Iran's currency). 3-4 months ago it wouldn't even be close to half of this amount. The items didn't even include rice or meat. I saw the price of one single bag of chips and it was over 90,000 toman. That bag of chips was almost 40,000 toman about 7 months ago.

I also see people talking about losing their jobs. Beauty Salons, Gyms, electronics stores, clothing shops are closing down one by one and with them the employees are losing their jobs. There are estimates of about 4 million jobs being closed down in the next couple of months if this goes on.

Just today a "parliament" member said around 400,000 people working in construction are going to lose their jobs. How many families does this include? If each of these peopld belong to a family of, let's say 3, that would mean 1.2 million individuals are going to be financially insecure.

I just want others to see the scale of how fast the IRGC is running the country to the ground. I'm afraid if this goes on there won't be a country to go back to. I'm afraid for every family impacted by the incompetence and absolute violence directed at us by the IRGC for the past 47 years.

If you're still not quite clear on what the article is saying, this woman had a rapidly growing malignant tumor until her doctor poked it with one needle to take a sample.

Her immune cells responded to that tiny little needle wound as they normally would, and only then detected something wrong with the surrounding cells, attacking the cancer they now associated with that trivial damage.

It doesn't reliably work that way all the time or we would have noticed this happening a lot more often, but this would also seem to imply that, across the entire history of the practice, there's probably an above-zero number of people who actually beat cancer through acupuncture.
