@oldmancable
"listen, everybody's sorta dealing with their own shit right now. so unless this is super important –"
"I wanted to ask about Hope." It was important. He didn't let Josh finish before he spoke up. "How has she been lately? Have you noticed anything different about her since she was brought back?"
destny:
“Many things. Nothing.” Something. Everything. She reaches up with gloved hands and unclicks her helmet. Pulling the gold and blue dome from her head, Irene takes in a breath of fresh air. Even though it’s hot under the faceplate she prefers to remain masked. Nathan is not an enemy, though — not at the moment, at least. She sees potential for his corruption. Her best bet is to try and get through to him before it reaches that point. “Your family tree rots from the inside.” Misted eyes are trained in his general direction. “Mother. Daughter. For some, it’s too late.”
Nate furrows his brows and studies her face as she takes her helmet off. “Hope and Jean?” His stomach sank. “What do you mean too late? They’ve been brought back.”
hidariyaos:
“I am always interested in what you have to say, Nathan.” The words are genuine. “But I came to speak with you about Hope.”
He nodded. “What about her?” Nate would be lying if he said he wasn’t a bit concerned about Hope being brought up, but he wasn’t going to jump to conclusions. “She’s set on her warpath, I know that much. If you’re gonna ask me to change her mind, I don’t think I can.”
briellebrook:
Until recently, Brielle never considered herself someone who cleaned up messes. Now, she does if the messes are vampires. “I’m learning that pretty quickly. How do you stay on top of it all and not let them, y’know, pile up and get out of control?”
Nate thought for a moment and then let out an exasperated sigh. “Don’t know if I’m the best person to be getting advice from.” He awkwardly chuckled and then shrugged. “When it gets out of control, that means I’m not doin’ my job. But my job is my life. You gotta ask yourself if that’s what you really want.”
mrvlgirl:
Jean’s keeping an eye on the younger Cable. “Not a stranger, no. Things with him were…complicated, to say the least. He killed you, Nate. That took a long time to get over. But I realized eventually he was my son, too.” It feels wrong to say that to him. The boy who killed you — who is you — is also my son. It makes it sound like she replaced him. Jean loves them both differently. “When they resurrected you, I couldn’t have been more relieved. We all need you.”
“He was doin’ what he thought he needed to. When he gets older he’ll calm down. A little bit, at least.” Nate remembered how he felt when he was younger— it was like all the raw nerves were more easily aggravated. He had more of a temper, and more of an ego. The weight on his shoulders was harder to carry around back then. He was en emotional person by nature and he hadn’t yet learned how to not let it consume him. He had forgiven his younger self faster than anyone else had. “Believe me, I’m glad to be back. And I’m glad you are too. And Hope. I just can’t shake the feeling that something is still wrong. You gotta feel it too.”
dvrkchylde:
“I don’t mind messes when they’re fun, but this one is decidedly not.”
“That’s somethin’ you and I can agree on. This has been a shit storm. If you hadn’t said that, I woulda thought I really was starting to get old.”
wclvrines:
“The grizzled old guys with daughters.” Laura corrects him. “I’ve never been allowed to be young.” She was a weapon, a killing machine. Not a girl. It had taken a long time to recover from that kind of conditioning.
“Hm. Guess you’re right.” There were similarities between him and Logan. But it wasn’t just them— they both had daughters who held far too much weight on their shoulders. They deserved better than they had gotten. “And now you’re reminding me of Hope. She wasn’t really either— I tried, but it wasn’t exactly a normal childhood. I know you didn’t either.”
skunkheaded:
“At least it’s somethin’. Some people are just talkin’ outta their asses now.”
“Most people do.” Nate scoffed. “Either they say too much that means nothin’ at all, or they say shit that’s just plain wrong. I keep my mouth shut when I can manage it.”
whtequeen:
“Nathan, dear, don’t overthink things. What happened in the building is assuredly a tragedy. It’s what happened after that I celebrate.”
“Noted. And I guess I won’t argue with that being somethin’ to celebrate. But something seems off. I’ve got a bit of a knack for sensing that kind of shit.”
formermessiah:
“How’d I know you were going to take all the blame?” She smiles. That’s just who her dad is. Some only see how hard he is. They don’t see the softness that has helped to raise Hope over the years. Her childhood was rocky, but she wouldn’t change it. “More or less, yeah. It doesn’t really feel like we have much of a choice here. Things were bad and that was before Sinister went on a killing spree in the Council.”
Nathan made a face at her. Hope knew him better than most and she was not one to hold back— but he didn’t need her worrying about him. Wasn’t it a parents job to take the blame and try to protect their kid? He rolled his eyes playfully and then moved on. “Things have gotten worse. I didn’t want you making any rash decisions but you might be right.”
goblnqueen:
Something inside of her sighs with relief. This is a start. Maybe even a good start. “Do you want to go someplace?” The area of Krakoa they’re in bustles with people. “We can do it here, but maybe it’s better if we don’t air out our dirty laundry for everyone to see. Again.”
“I’m not lookin’ to cause a scene.” His voice softened a bit. Madelyne seemed to be trying, to genuinely want to close the rift between them. It was different, for sure. “But if you’ve got a place in mind, we can go there. Feels right to kind of let you lead the way with all of this.”
mrvlgirl:
“You know me. I’m great at giving myself breaks.” Jean can’t help but sigh. She’s always been hard on herself, and that’s partly Charles’ fault. He had put so much pressure on the original team at such a young age. They were all coping with that decades later. “That’s good, because I don’t actually have any in me right now. I’m fine. You know how resurrections go. You come out healed and rejuvenated. That doesn’t make me less angry, of course, but I’m okay.”
“Yeah, you and me both.” Nathan and Jean might not have spent that much time together, but that was something they had in common. She helped raise him but their time was still shorter than he would have wanted. “Coming back feeling better is great and all, but you were targeted. That’s not sitting right with me.”
nexusbeings:
Wanda can only hope that Cable is of sound mind. “Is that feeling prominent on Krakoa?” She asks after a pregnant pause. “I ask you to be truthful, Nathan. Is something wrong?”
Nate makes a point to take a deep breath and then release it. “People are either strangely calm or feeling weird that others are strangely calm. From what I’ve seen at least.” He might not be the best with people, but he could read a room well enough. “From what I know of the timeline, something is off. Magneto being taken off the board like this is enough to tell me that.”
“I don’t think anything is as simple as you’re making it seem. It’s not cut and dry.”
“That’s a pretty diplomatic answer from someone who was just killed.”
“There’s corruption on Krakoa. Some things can only be concealed for so long before the inferno blazes.”
“I don’t think we have time for riddles. What do you know?”
“Something is wrong.” Her father is dead, the Avengers and mutants both targeted. “Not having answers is difficult.”
“Suddenly it feels like we’re all sitting ducks. I’m getting tired of everything feeling so on edge— something has definitely shifted.”
