Spoke to a gen z person the other night and apparently the young folks don't know about the very legal sites from which you can access public domain media (including Dracula, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and other Victorian gothic horror stories)?

Like this young person didn't even know about goddamn Gutenberg which is a SHAME. I linked to it and they went "aw yiss time to do a theft" and I was like "I mean yo ho ho and all that, sure, but. you know gutenberg is entirely legal, right?"

Anyway I'm gonna put this in a few Choice Tags (sorry dracula fans I DID mention it though so it's fair game) and then put some Cool Links in a reblog so this post will still show UP in said tags lmao.

I was reviewing the list of the top 100 books downloaded yesterday and I saw a fair few that I had to read for college classes - so if you’re a college student and your professor assigns you to read Plato or any number of older works, check here before you buy a copy.

I reread the Anne series several years back - they were free through this. I need to reread Pride and Prejudice at least once a year, and my e-book version is from this. Someone recommended Jekyll and Hyde to me a few weeks back and I got a free copy from this. When I went to Haworth on my last holiday before the plague times, I brought books by the Bronte sisters with me to read or reread that I downloaded from here. It’s a great resource.

Yes yes yes! I was honestly so flabbergasted that this young person hadn't heard of the gutenberg project! It's been around for AGES, maybe longer than the kindle has? And it's such a huge project and wonderful resource! It used to be a household name (or maybe that's just my family, thanks to my dad being a cheapskate nerd [affectionate]). I was so glad to be able to share this resource and others with them though, and I wanted to make sure no one else was missing out!

If you look at the first reblog from me I also recommended a few other resources, most of which were from www.archive.org, home of the Wayback Machine! They run openlibrary.org, where you can check out ebooks of some public domain titles! They even have the Bone series by Jeff Smith!

And archive.org itself has all kinds of public domain media including music and movies! For Dracula fans, here's a radio show adaptation of the book, starring Orson Welles! And here's a 1920 movie adaptation of "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," starring John Barrymore, the grandfather of Drew Barrymore!

I'm so excited to see people falling in love with classic media through Dracula Daily! Let's keep that fire blazing!

Also, if you can't handle reading things, check out libirvox.org! it's a free audio book project taking public domain works and people doing free audiobooks! there's a lot of great stuff on there, but it takes things in the public domain and makes audio books out of them!

it's a super nice project, and you can find some really nice readers there!

lots of writers and publishers are prepared to waive future profits for entirely petty reasons

because of this the entire works of Philip K Dick [petty writer who found himself with lots of hangers on during his life] and HP Lovecraft [his publisher - who was his wife and hated him] became public domain on their death

Sherlock Holmes entered public domain this year, it's always worth checking because you can save a fortune

and the more popular the classic - the more likely someone has uploaded it

Public domain works in the US are:

Anything published (in the US) from 1927 or earlier (this number goes up every year for quite a while), and

Anything published between 1928 and 1963 that wasn't renewed, and

Anything published before 1989 without a proper copyright notice.

(Don't go looking for things in that third category unless you've studied a LOT about copyright law. Mostly that covers things like "weird little newsletters" and "self-published booklets" and sometimes fanzines. But most publications have a copyright notice in them.)

There's also some oddball exemptions here and there; copyright law is a tentacled mess. But those are the basic guidelines. (Except for audio. Audio has its own set of rules. It's weird.) (I mentioned tentacles, did I not? Double the amount of them you were thinking of.)

There are a lot of works from the 50s and early 60s that were not renewed, especially short stories published in magazines.

Project Gutenberg began in 1971; the first text was the US Declaration of Independence, shared through the university computer system. That was the start of "hey computers + public domain text = FREE BOOKS FOR EVERYONE."

Adding on that Project Gutenberg is not just Eng language texts either! I know specifically about the French texts because I did independent study French lit in high school and all my sources were Project Gutenberg acquired (Candide my beloathed) but there's many open source texts available in a number of languages.

Because when you're not only young and penniless but living through the Great Recession, what you really want to read about isn't the world's greatest detective solving crimes. It's neat that this scene demonstrates the ways in which, despite Tessa's relative youth, she's still experienced things that Magnus never has. Magnus is over 400 years old, so he thinks he understands how it works: you love someone, they die, you keep living. Tessa, on the other hand, is the one who knows what it's like to truly find your soulmate and to outlive them.

I think part of Tessa's different approach to love comes from the fact that she was welcomed into a found family while she was still a teenager. She met Will and Sophie and the rest as peers, even though she eventually watched them grow old in ways that she couldn't. Magnus, on the other hand, spent most of his youth with the Silent Brothers. He didn't start really interacting with mortal humans until he was already aware of his warlock nature, and so all of his relationships kind of left him as an outsider. Magnus was the mysterious stranger who blows into someone's life, or the powerful warlock they go to for help. He describes how even the people who lived with him until their deaths still saw him as something temporary, because they assumed that they must be temporary to him. This is why Alec is different, because he fully sees Magnus as an equal human partner. He welcomes Magnus into his friend group and into his family, because that's what you do with a boyfriend. For the first time, Magnus is being treated the same way Tessa was treated in 1878: as another messy person who needs friends.

It's just interesting to me how much the experience of being a warlock is shaped by how they're perceived. Tessa spent an entire mortal lifetime as part of a group of Shadowhunter friends. She was treated with unconditional love, and so she learned to give unconditional love in return. Because of this, she knows that the love she had for Will continues to live on long after his death. The love was part of her and part of the world, because they all accepted it without limitations. Magnus has never had that, and so he doesn't know how to approach a romance without thinking of the inevitable heartbreak. He's only ever been an immortal in love with a mortal, not a person in love with another person.

Somewhat connected to this; I always think about the effect the rest of the tmi gang had on Magnus’ relationship with Alec. Like I think it’s less “Alec lets him in”, and more “they all keep appearing & won’t leave so now you have to deal with it.” Like if Magnus didn’t get bullied into their found family over the course of tmi would Alec still be the exception? Would they even still be together?

Because it really was bullying 😭 he didn’t want them there at all & tried to deter them constantly (complaining, calling Simon every name under the sun except Simon etc) before relenting for Alec’s (or sometimes Clary’s) sake. When they break up, Izzy subsequent actions are definitely grounds for a restraining order. But also, the fact she organised a giant harassment campaign… kinda worked. Warlock friendships are typically held at a distance, none of Magnus’ friends were constantly checking up on him (especially for something as small as breaking up with his shadowhunter boyfriend of three months). Meanwhile Jace is at his apartment calling himself Magnus’ friend and calling him friendless among other things. But he also there, so Magnus does unwittingly get dragged into their group by the end and he just has to deal with it.

General iron sickness (severe)

Which comes with burning in lungs from breathing in the air for so long, making him cough a lot

Headaches

Got hit on the head with a sword pommel

Burned wrists

Burns on chest and back from chains

Burns on face

Burns around throat

Bruises on throat

Scratches from gremlins

Burns and bleeding shoulder, pierced all the way through

Back injuries from being thrown an iron tree

Burns on hands

See all wonderful reasons for Ash to be get permanent injuries. Hence list below of what permanent issues I think Ash should suffer from that.

● Permanent lung issues from all the iron sickness. He could have a bit of a rasp from that point on and struggle to catch his breath. He might also be more sensitive to lung related illnsss.

● Muscle and nerve damage in his shoulder. Also same with this back. Weather fronts are leaving him in agony.

● of course scars from all the iron burns.

Semi permanent wounds

● Concussion. Give me Ash with trouble talking and who's too dizzy to really stand up and fight but has no choice but to try. Also it can mess with emotions which would be great to break down the winter prince mask.

It's easy to make jokes about how often Magnus swoops in and solves whatever problem the Shadowhunters are dealing with, but I do appreciate that Magnus being an incredibly trusting guy is just a part of his character. This is great specifically because it fucks him over sometimes. Not everybody is a Will Herondale who just needed a little help to get on the right path: some people are like Shinyun Jung, and they will use Magnus's empathy and kindness against him. It's just that Magnus is so goddamn powerful that he can get away with trusting everyone he meets. Shinyun might have "imposed" upon Magnus, but she never kills him or anything because Magnus is a powerhouse and ultimately he's always able to clean up his messes. That's why Magnus keeps trusting people, even after being betrayed: he knows how much good he can do in the world by going out of his way to save a stranger, and he knows that even if he misplaces his trust he'll still be able to save himself in the end.

Anyone else remember that old post where CC goes through a list of all the TMI characters explaining how she can't kill any of them because killing Alec or Magnus would be bad gay representation, killing Maia or Magnus would be bad POC representation, killing Clary or Isabelle would be bad woman representation, killing Simon would be bad Jewish representation, and killing Jace would be boring because he's already died once.

I'm kind of obsessed with the mindset she brings to her allyship. Only kill straight white Christian men, it's why Jordan had to die.

I headcanon that Ash used glamour at the end of the iron king to hide his still healing wounds. Because boy did not go from the verge of death to perfectly fine.

But imagine he keeps that up the entire time. Nobody can see how badly injured he was. It's a weakness, after all.

Until Virus puts the bug in him and he's iron poisoned again. So when the gang sees him again, it's so much worse.

Meghan realizing he's been hiding his scars this entire time. Puck realizing what exactly Ash has been through to keep Meghan alive.

Puck seeing that would be awful because Meghan understands it’s bad, but has the benefit of not truly being able to tell the age of scars. Sure, Ash’s face is fucked up, the right side of his lips are turned into a permanent grimace and his hands and wrists are going to take some time to move right again, but that could reasonably be from Virus, right? He wasn’t looking like this under his glamor the WHOLE time, surely.

But Puck knows scars, knows Iron damage; they’ve been in the mortal world for sixteen years, riding in cars and handling the Chase family’s cookware, they know exactly how fast a fey can heal. They can see that sure, Virus caused the open wounds, but everything else is older than it should be.

And even Mab’s best healers couldn’t fix it for him.

I live for Puck and Ash noticing things about each other that others don't. Because yeah, they would. They both know more about the fey than Meghan, but they also know each other better.

And Puck seeing things and suddenly being hit with the realization of what Ash has been hiding is just ouch. Especially because it takes him right back to the time after Ariella's death. Where Ash was also acting like he was fine at court and Elysium, but Puck saw everything else.

And ouch yes Ash noticing how the human world has affected Puck is also great.

It was a huge milestone of scientific and technological advancement. (Plus, at the time, politically significant). Humanity went to space! We set foot on a celestial body that was not earth for the first time in human history! That’s a big deal! I’ve never thought about it before but now that I have, it’s ridiculous to me that that’s not part of our everyday lives and the public consciousness anymore. Why don’t we have a public holiday and a family barbecue about it. Why have I never seen the original broadcast of the moon landing? It should be all over the news every year!
