Hazel Scott playing two pianos at the same damn time with ease
Hazel Scott was a musical sorcerer and a civil rights hero. She:
was admitted to Julliard at 8.
was performing in top venues by 16.
pioneered “swinging the classics” and made the equivalent of a million dollars a year doing it.
was the first person of color to have their own national TV show.
went to Hollywood but refused to be cast as a “singing maid.” Demanded and got control over her casting, her wardrobe, and how footage featuring her was cut.
refused to perform in segregated venues and led charges for integration in several northern cities, notably Spokane.
She was brought down by the House Committee on Unamerican Activities, and has been largely forgotten. But she was a sorcerer, and a hero.
@theladyragnell
Let’s un-forget her.
extremely curious
were you taught to leave one space after a sentence when typing or two?
One, USAmerican
Two, USAmerican
One, non-USAmerican
Two, non-USAmerican
I'm from the US and was taught two but I'm beginning to think this is just a freak thing my school did that has no bearing in the rest of the world
The transition from two to one spaces happened during my adult life. I was there gandalf, deep magic, etc.
Two, Americanly, and it was a FUCKING FRUSTRATING transition.
Two spaces used to be standard because people were using type writers.
Once we transitioned to computers for typing, a double space no longer was needed to create more visual space to make documents easier to read.
It was needed for a bit because the font computers used mimicked typewriter font (mostly courier or courier new) so you still "needed" the spaces in that transition period. Once things switched to pretty much everyone using Times New Roman (etc.), it was optional.
I learned to type on a computer, but it was WordPerfect 5.1 with a blue screen running on DOS that definitely only used courier as a font. We got dinged for not using two spaces. Super useful course, though. Maybe the most useful course I took in high school.
the idea of dan howell over explainer and justifier extraordinaire feeling the overwhelming need to over explain and justify why he is now looking at marriage and/or fully marrying his boyfriend of almost 17 years is fun to me i must admit. it’s for the taxes it’s for when one of us dies it’s cause we’ve never had a party for our relationship and like i don’t even want one but PHIL- it’s so we can get an insane amount of food catered and that means specific to our taste DIPS

Been getting into Dan and Phil since the Hard Launch! Despite not watching them until late last year, it's been lovely to see the way they've become more authentic and happier as a result. Best wishes for their upcoming tour!
