You know what I will say it. My main problem with the fight song in Supergirl (2026) isn’t that it felt incongruous — though it did — but rather that it felt like they just wanted another song to go viral, but this time it needed to be a Girl Singer for their Girl Movie.

The thing is, though, that if they really wanted a female vocalist on a rock song, they could have used something by Metric. Or Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Or The Naked and Famous. Or No Doubt. Or Blondie. Or Heart. Or Avril Lavigne. Or Paramore. And that’s just off the top of my head.

But they didn’t do that. They used an airbrushed cover of a song performed by an exclusively male band, with exclusively men on the writing credits, and it felt cheap.

i'm defending public schools with my life not because I had a good experience in them but because I refuse to let politicians convince people we need a society where school is exclusive to rich kids.

let me tell you something. the public school in my (low income) hometown was fucking TERRIBLE once you got past early elementary to the point where teachers would tell parents to get their kids out (this is why I kept changing schools). however, years later, that school merged with a public school in another town and simply having more resources made it so much better it now has a normal if not positive reputation. so yeah there are in fact public schools in a terrible situation. but if you look at them and say "this is why we should get rid of public schools and replace them with private schools" you're insane.

and since this is tumblr and no one has critical thinking skills, allow me to clarify this is not an endorsement of current educational standards and regulations in public schools, or support for bullying (?)

This and also school funding largely comes from local taxes. Schools in low income areas have fewer resources because their students’ families are less wealthy. Public schools that are bad aren’t bad because they’re public, they’re bad because they exist in a flawed system that makes class mobility nigh impossible

there is this annoying trend where for example someone will like. reinvent phrenology and someone will point out " you know the nazi's believed in that" and then response they'll go "oh so i should make sure my phrenology isn't racist or anti-sematic!" because they don't understand that assigning physical traits to intelligence or morality is still bad no matter what, not just because "people who i know are objectly bad share those beliefs for the wrong reasons" and this happens everytime.

Different but similar, some people respond to “this symbol was appropriated by a hate group” with “oh, but I don’t mean it like that”. But the point isn’t that they mean it like that, it’s that they might make people feel genuinely unsafe around them. Choosing to use a hate symbol despite knowing the connotations is choosing to be okay with making people afraid.

Would loveeeeee the angst between Duke and his friends literally HATING Dick’s guts, the first Robin. Perhaps that was the real reason why We Are Robin disbanded, because after actually getting to know the first Robin, and he just chucks them to the PIGS, they stopped believing in the symbol ☹️ Just like every other time we parasocially idolize celebrities or social media influencers, and then controversies come up into the light… we aren’t perfect. A video apology is too insincere, Dick needs to prove himself a changed man, at least, to the kids he risked.

Okay I apologize in advance for this being a little long but: the first lesson Batman teaches Dick is not to trust the police. Literally the first time Bruce ever speaks to Dick, he tells Dick not to go to the police, warning him that they are corrupt and cannot be trusted. “This whole town is run by Boss Zucco,” he says when Dick asks him why. “If you told what you knew you’d be dead in an hour.” And Dick listens. He doesn’t go to the police, instead investigating himself (with Bruce’s help) and taking Zucco down without the cops’ help.

This issue was published in 1940, fourteen years before the Comics Code Authority was formed. Editorial Matter A(3) states that, “Policemen, judges, Government officials and respected institutions shall never be presented in such a way as to create disrespect for established authority.” And then DC, alongside Archie Comics, was one of the last two publishing houses to drop the CCA, using it up until 2011.

On a completely unrelated note, DC Comics donates a significant amount of money to politicians, with 63% of their donations being to the Republican Party. They’ve skewed more Democratic over the years, but it’s still a lot. For comparison, under Disney, Marvel’s donations are 86% to the Democratic Party. Marvel was also the first to drop the CCA, doing so in 2001. But again, completely unrelated. I’m sure that has nothing to do with it.

The CCA had a major impact on what stories were allowed to be told and, as such, on canon as a whole. I highly recommend reading through it (it’s neither long nor dense) in order to look at comics canon with a more critical lens, because Jesus Christ, the second I started looking I couldn’t stop seeing.

Or, TL;DR: Dick learned ACAB from Bruce and I blame the CCA’s influence for him ever being a cop. While I acknowledge that it is canon it is one of the many things I choose to ignore :)

I didn’t really mean to say Dick believes in the police force, that’s why it was only temporarily. I just have reason to believe Dick’s belief that a temporary hold up while theoretically being beneficial for the cops to be an obstacle for the Owls to the kids. From his positions in life, he’d have to be blind sighted by marginalized experiences at least a few times. If the Owls have to exist at all, we might as well take some bits and pieces out of that to make a good story.

Then again, other stories easily tell you how not black and white Batman and Robin’s opinions of the police were and vice verse and actually still is, so idk why you believe it is so? The cops are one of the few topics that Batman can never really agree on. Sometimes you hate them, sometimes you think their system lets you criminalize criminals. Or like- all the time actually. It’s a staple of the pulp fiction that Batman was based after after all. They don’t really consider what happens to criminals if they get arrested? It’s just convenient i guess?

I just think it’d be fun to have some tension in the family 🤔 or at least- unwind that tension at all. By letting the tension unwind we open up a good motivation to have Dick actually gain a dynamic with Duke at all. Which is significantly more interesting than whatever writers think Dick and Duke are like- which is basically nonexistent!!! Friendly by proxy but never close and if they are close then why?????????????? People do not genuinely call each other family that easily despite having the same guardians, so yeah.

Just give them an excuse to interact like proper characters instead of a perfect batfamily

Okay I was mostly talking about how modern day writers have kind of been painted into a corner if they want to write about stuff like police brutality or the big blue wall of silence or anything, but you mentioned giving them excuses to interact like proper characters, and I’m just… yes 100%

I have a big family myself, a lot of whom are not biologically related to me, and yeah the dynamics get really complicated really quickly. DC not taking the time to establish dynamics between Bruce’s kids (especially the newer additions) is one of my biggest pet peeves because like not only does that make stories more interesting but from a writing and marketing standpoint that’s one of the best ways to get readers invested???

Like I firmly believe Duke and Jason could have a really interesting dynamic. They’re both English nerds who do not respect authority and have a penchant for chaos but they’re also very different people with very different outlooks, if only DC would let them properly interact

Anyway yeah apologies that was like 90% my general frustration with DC making Dick become a cop in the first place and then not even properly discussing the implications

Also unrelated but fun fact, Dick totally kills people in the aforementioned issue. Seriously, he knocks at least four people off a very tall building. Batman also holds someone over the edge of said building and then Zucco knocks him out of Batman’s grip and Batman just watches him fall to his death like “oh, no. anyway.” Early comics were wild

I'm on a tumblr break but I came back to cite this because I would literally never lie about the Chameleon confessing his love to Peter on the bridge where Gwen died. It is SUCH a moment. (cw for suicide.)

It's in Webspinners: Tales of Spider-Man #11, but the story starts in #10. I really recommend flipping through Webspinners on the whole -- it's a bit of a mixed bag, quality-wise, but issue #1 contains The Kiss as a backup story, which is one of my favorite PeterGwen comics, and it also just kind of represents why Spider-Man should have eighteen different books because then you're allowed to have weird little books with smaller stories where Peter sees Gwen's ghost and the narration says "beautiful, benevolent smile. you never really told her, not really. tell her." (#12) haunting. if you have eighteen different titles, you can take risks and get melancholy, it doesn't have to be all punching all the time and bigger villains.

And ALSO the Chameleon says he's in love with Peter.
