Great way to spend vacation days.
The true blasphemy of literature is the romanticization of romance. They make it beautiful—all soft words, and elegant lines—and enchanting, with magic sparkling in the margins.
And you can feel it in the depths of your soul, an unexplored ocean of laughter and tears and dreams all melded together.
The yearning of a kiss that brushes against the steady and so so warm pulsing beat of life—against the smooth skin of a lovers neck. The desperation to touch another being and feel that they’re alive, right there next to you—right there, and never leaving.
To love and be loved is a jewel among treasures and all that we each seek—all that we each desire.
It burns and it burns and it burns.
“I would know him in death, at the end of the world.”
“Come home and break my heart, if you must.”
“Occasionally, Fate pulls itself together again and Time is always waiting.”
“And perhaps it is the greatest grief, after all, to be left on earth when another is gone.”
“By you, I am forever undone.”
“One word from you shall silence me forever.”
“A heart’s a heavy burden.”
“My sweet nemesis.”
“If you have to go, you know I will go with you.”
and then?
and then.
The book is over.
And you remember that love like that doesn't exist.
Not in the real world.
And all you can do is cry.
The best character development is when the antagonist doesn't even really change or redeem himself. Like no, he still sucks, he's just on our side now.
fantastic post op. may i add when a previous antagonist has the same personality traits as before but framed as good things now that theyre on your side? "cold and calculating" becomes "unflichingly practical" when you need someone to push the big red button, "hair-trigger temper" is now "takes no shit", and no one is more dependable for chasing the big bad to the ends of the earth than that spiteful, unforgiving bastard who was hunting you down last season
You know whose “redemption” I fucking love that’s exactly along those lines?
Sandor fucking Clegane from Game of Thrones.
This ugly motherfucker. The Hound. One of the most dangerous men in Westeros.
An asshole of the highest order, with no allegiance to anyone.
He is an absolute dick. He will steal, lie, and kill anyone if he thinks it’ll save his skin.
One of his defining acts is when he and his hostage walk up to a random family, accept their hospitality by dining with them, and then in return he knocks the father over the head in front of his daughter and steals what little silver they have.
And when his hostage naturally gets annoyed at him for doing that, he explains that the family who took them in was doomed. Winter is coming, they didn’t have the food or resources to survive it, and at least when he has the it’ll keep them alive.
Well, fast forward a few seasons.
Clegane gets the absolute shit kicked out of him. A buncha religious hippies take him in, give him some morals, then they promptly get murdered horribly, so he has to go on a roaring rampage of revenge…whereupon he promptly joins a slightly better armed version of those religious hippies.
And after he joins the new armed hippies, because he’s got fuck else better to do, winter hits, and they go to join the other good guys to fight the bad guys.
Yadda yadda yadda none of that is what I’m talking about.
What I’m talking about is about halfway before The Hound has to confront waves of undead hordes, him and the armed hippies stop at a farmhouse.
A very…familiar…farmhouse.
And you know what they find?
Two bodies. The father and the daughter.
They’d starved to death in the winter, and chose to die quickly via knife than slowly via cold and hunger.
In other words, Clegane was 100% correct.
They were going to die when winter came, and Clegane did put that silver to better use.
…and you know what he does?
He buries them.
And whispers a few words, about how they were kind to him, and didn’t deserve their deaths.
And that is the kind of redemption story I fucking love.
Sandor Clegane was a hard-nosed, cynical, piece of shit.
But he is absolutely correct in his assessments of the world and how cold and calculating it was.
His redemption arc wasn’t about him magically becoming enlightened to a new reality of the world. He KNOWS what reality is like.
His redemption arc is instead, seeing those cold, hard realities, and realizing there are some good fucking people in it. And that even if reality is shit, you still should care about those people.
Even if in your heart of hearts you know those people are doomed.
*~.It’s so comforting to know I can stay up till 2 am reading the most toe curling, filthy, plotless smut in a warm bed on thanksgiving break. This is what the holidays are all about. *~.
Jude Duarte and Cardan Greenbriar as I imagine them: Jude is focused and a little cross; Cardan is watching her carefully and trying to look like he’s not 🖤 I’m experimenting with skipping the watercolour step and going full digital colour. The pro: it’s faster. The con: you don’t get quite the same organic texture. I kept the restrained colour palette that I generally prefer, and tried to get at least some texture from the pencil crayon and the paper itself. It’s a different look, but it’s growing on me! Next time I might try adding more pencil texture to the background.
John green: here’s another het teenage love story I guess
Hank green: here’s a sci-fi story complete with a bi protagonist who has relationships with both men and women and talks about the toxicity of social media and also robot aliens
Relationships are scary and complicated ONLY when you start thinking of your partner as some kind of adversary.
You know how to stop being scared of relationships? Remember that it’s got a goddamn buddy system *built in*. That’s all a relationship IS: “Let’s approach life with the buddy system.”
Check on your buddy. Make sure your buddy doesn’t forget their lunch box on the schoolbus. Hold hands with your buddy so you don’t get lost. If your buddy wants to look at the monkey cage, look at the goddamn monkey cage with them. If you are the one looking at the monkey cage, ask your buddy what they want to do next, and when they want to feed the giraffe, help them find a quarter for the little food dispenser. Be a good buddy, and if your buddy isn’t a good one too, tell the teacher and ask for a new one.
This isn’t fucking rocket science, people.
Before the computing era, ILM was the master of oil matte painting, making audiences believe that some of the sets in the original Star Wars and Indiana Jones trilogy were real when they weren’t. They were the work of geniuses like Chris Evans, Michael Pangrazio, Frank Ordaz, Harrison Ellenshaw and Ralph McQuarrie ! Forever thank you, to their handmade art and the work of their colleagues, that made us dream of impossible worlds and fantastic places across Earth and the Universe.
There are more background paintings on this article, featuring comments by the masters/artists themselves !
Some of the following pieces were made by other artists 2:
exCUSE ME?!?!!??!??! TheYRE PAINTINGS?!??!!?!
SHUT UP I thought they were miniatures!!!!
It’s too beautiful. I could cry.
I love this because I’ll be watching a movie and think “how did they do that? Is that a building they built for this movie? Was it there beforehand? Is it cardboard or CGI? Is that actually some place on Earth that they’re filming?” And the answer to all of these now is “nope, that’s a painting”. I can’t believe some of the most iconic, familiar shots were paintings!
few things are worse than mistaking situational tolerance for friendship
situational tolerance, that’s a good one.
Adulthood: Finding out that most of your childhood friendships were situational tolerances born from school. Only to go on and find new situational tolerances at work.
here’s to situational toleranceship!
Maybe the real situational tolerances were the friends we made along the way!
stop calling racists, antisemites, misogynists, ableists, homopobes, transphobes, etc “trolls”. they’re not “trolling”, they’re being bigots. trolling is disliking a video for no reason or sending someone the bee movie script. being a literal nazi, lying about being assaulted by black people, telling immigrants to “go back to their country”, repeatedly misgendering trans women, those are all acts of violent bigotry. not trolling
More of my fan art inspired by The Handmaid’s Tale. This one is titled, “Resist”. Praise Be, Bitches.
I love you so much. Save Hannah.
