a rare closeup of a black swift, found throughout north america and small parts of south america. swifts are rarely seen up close; they spend more of their life in air than any other species of bird - they eat, drink, mate and sleep while in flight. they are incapable of perching like other birds; they must cling to vertical surfaces.
(x)
I had to look this up becauseĀ āsleep while in flightā ????
but yeah, apparently completely true.Ā these birds stay aloft for as much as 10 months nonstop, feed on insects, spend more energy at night (when there arenāt warm thermals to ride) and at dawn and dusk climb to 10,000 ft altitude where the 30 min slow descent is probably when they catch their sleep.
theyāre unusually long-lived for such active critters (20 yrs) and they may be limiting energy expenditure by being extremely aerodynamic and narrow bodied.Ā Also a single bird travels the distance of about 7 roundtrip journeys to the moon in its lifetime (>3 million miles).

I am a glorified office administrator who understands server hardware why am I the only person in this company who gets what social engineering is?
Total stranger on the phone who weāve never spoken to before: I have power of attorney over the CEO of this corporation and we are a customer of yours. Please change the administrator password on the server to XXXXX
My boss, putting on white grease paint and a red wig: Oh, of course! Letās do it quickly so that youāll want to keep working with us since youāre going to be making business decisions!
Me: I would sell you to satan for one corn chip and Iām allergic to corn but before you do this maybe you should call someone who is actually on our contact list for our customer and see if theyāve ever heard of this stranger.
My boss, looking through a selection of shoes that honk when you walk: Oh, but she said that it was very important that none of the employees know what was happening because theyāre making staffing changes.
Me: As your lawyer I recommend that you just call a single one of our contacts and see if theyāve ever heard of her name.
My boss, shoving all of our technicians into a VW beetle: Youāre not my lawyer.
Me: HOW THE FUCK WOULD YOU KNOW? I COULD BE! YOU SHOULD MAYBE CHECK ON THAT.
TIL everyoneās employee ID at my company is the last five of their SSN.
Boss: On the bright side, itās only the last five
Me: YOU CAN COMMIT FRAUD WITH FOUR
Security firms that are hired to check the security of banks will often use the following tactic: They will walk up to the teller in a suit with their ID badge and a clipboard and go:
āHello I am [name] from [security firm] weāve been hired to verify the security of the facility I need to see your computers.ā
āErmā¦Iāll have to verify that with my managers.ā
āCongratulations, you have just passed the security verification.ā [Scribbles on clipboard] āBut in all seriousness I do need to verify your security so I need to see your computers.ā
āOh okay.ā AND LETS THEM IN.
āSocial engineeringā is a way too fancy word for what it is. I know a guy (not personally) who broke several people out of prison by essentially writing āGreetings, please release this person, signed, whoever the judge isā on a piece of paper and faxing it there. Because no one would have a fax machine in their own house I guess.
not to derail, but holy shit that praxis
Iāve had clerks just give out a whole ass SSN when I asked.
An inspection in 2014 found the password for the Louvreās surveillance camera system was ālouvre.ā
you can have multiple most gorgeous looking women giving performance of their lifetime in a movie or show yet people will still come out obsessing & wanting to fuck a white man with the personality of a wet cardboard
Can anyone explain wtf is going on here especially a Korean speaker
someone on reddit explained š
That is one of the most astronomical fuck up translations I have ever seen.
Remember! When companies lay off all their staff because AI is cheaper, this sort of shit is what you can leverage for a better contract when they are inevitably forced to hire everyone back :)
Iāve been cackling about this for like five minutes now

O-okay, letās get into this, shall we?
*grumbling* Would you rather work for Lex Luthor or the Joker- *shouting* Lex Luthor, by like, a fucking mile!
Yes, yes, working for Lex Luthor is basically like being an Amazon employee that makes weapons of mass destruction, which is bad. Lex is like Donald Trump mixed with Mark Zuckerberg mixed with Jeffrey fucking Bezos, itās not a great mix. He does not treat his henchmen well. Their lives still suck, and they are probably monitored on how long they take piss breaks for.
But letās analyze what working for Lex Luthor is like versus the fucking Joker. With Lex you probably get a dental plan, a health plan, a paycheck, and the guy that youāre fighting really cares about human life. Superman will hit you just long enough to knock you out, so youāre not a treat, so he can stop the problem.
If you work for the Joker, your payment is youāre not fucking dead. You say one wrong thing? Bang. You donāt laugh at his jokes? Bang! You do laugh at his jokes? Bang! You think Joker gives a fuck about a henchman?
Whoās Lex Luthorās right-hand-man? Itās a woman, you sexist, her name is Mercy, sheās awesome. Whoās Jokerās right-hand-man? Bob? Nah, heās dead. Harley? Tried to kill her multiple times. Slappy? Who the fuck is Slappy?
The best case scenario of working for the Joker is that you fight the fucking Batman! And that presents its own fucking list of problems. If you stop Superman as a Lex Luthor henchman, Lexāll be pissed, but heāll be at least happy that Superman was caught. If you stop Batman as a Joker henchman, you better have a fucking coffin picked out yesterday.
This isnāt a fun hypothetical question, this is a screening technique that the doctors at Arkham use to determine your mental health! There is a right and a wrong answer to this question, and the correct one is Lex fucking Luthor. Thank you for coming to my fucking Ted Talk, have a nice day.

Bitch neither I work for Wayne Industries, they got better offers than work these clowns:
batmans secret special attack is offering all of his enemys henchmen a living wage and guaranteed healthcare
it has come to my attention there exists a subset of reenactors who go around renaissance faires "infecting" bystanders with the Plague. i wish to thank these heroes for their service
yes this can come in the form of dressing up as a pack of rats and offering people "Congratulations! You've Contracted The Black Death" hand stamps, but consider also:
walking around asking people if they want to pet your rat (plushie)
going in character as a fur trader carting around a wagon full of exotic wares at competitive prices
handing people a business card containing only the printed image of a flea (and on the back, the text "uh-oh!")
cosplaying as a giant bacterium
*hands you my business card* it contains a single drawing of a flea
*instinctively you flip it over searching for information*
so strange when people assume 'waking up early' means increased productivity bc no??? im awake so i can read fanfic in bed before breakdown breakfast
who on earth is out there waking up early to get shit done??? the purpose of waking up early is to have QUIET TIME LOUNGING IN BED before the world gets LOUD & ANNOYING AS FUCK
so much respect to the people in the notes waking up early to play video games, watch tv, phone scroll, and in general Fuck Around for a few hours before the world intrudes. now THAT'S productivity!
i was at an event last night in california and i went to the bar to order wine bc wine was like, a thing, and i looked at the menu and saw i was completely out of my depth bc idk any wine names, so i turned to my right and there was a man in a gorgeous suit standing at the bar beside me and i said ādo you know anything about wine?ā and he said āa little, yes!ā i told him i liked white and dry wines and asked if heād order for me. he asked the server for two glasses and had one poured for each of us and then he clinked his glass on mine but he didnāt take a sip, he just watched me taste mine and then he asked what i thought and i said āitās pretty good, but like i said, i wouldnāt know.ā he laughed and told me to have a good time & i walked away. fifteen minutes later i found out heās the winemaker.
Architecture of return, escape (The British Museum) 2022 Pigment and acrylic on deer hide,Ā 36 x 55 in. (91.4 x 139.7 cm) Nicholas Galanin Born 1979, Tlingit/UnangaxĢ
"Galaninās work engages themes of persistence, power, and survival in the face of settler colonialism and its legacies of institutional racism and collective amnesia. Here, the floor plan of the British Museum is painted over a blue field. Pictograms of baskets, masks, woven hats, weapons, tools, and textiles reference the contested objects held in the museumās collection, while a red line maps an escape route for these examples of Indigenous cultural production. In many Native cultures, hide paintings relay histories across generations and objects embody lineages; in referencing both, Galanin is proposing a getaway plan for his ancestors."
The Caterpillar-Mimicking Spider: this species of jumping spider mimics a lichen moth caterpillar, possibly as a way to deter predators
This species (Uroballus carlei) is sometimes referred to as a caterpillar jumping spider or caterpillar jumper, because it bears such a striking resemblance to a caterpillar. It was discovered in Hong Kong just a few years ago.
Researchers believe that these strange little spiders mimic the caterpillars of local lichen moths, which may help to deter predators. Lichen moth caterpillars ingest toxic substances that make them unpalatable to predators, and they're covered in urticating hairs that cause pain and irritation when touched, so predators tend to avoid them. They also have aposematic features that advertise those defense mechanisms, making them an excellent model for mimicry.
The spider's resemblance to a caterpillar may serve as a defense mechanism against larger vertebrates, such as birds, and as a predatory ploy against certain invertebrates, like small beetles, thus allowing the spider to avoid being eaten while also enabling it to stalk and capture its own prey more effectively.
This article described the discovery back in 2019:
A new spider has been discovered, hiding in plain sight in one of the most populated places on the planet. And thereās a good chance it went undiscovered for so long because it doesnāt really look like a spider at all, but more like a fuzzy baby caterpillar. Its cute, fuzzy appearance has led the newly discovered spider to be namedĀ Uroballus carlei, after Eric Carle ā author of the wildly popular childrenās bookĀ The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
Living alongsideĀ Uroballus carleiĀ in the wooded areas of the Eastern District in Hong Kong are lichen moths. During the caterpillar stage, these moths are covered in bristly brown fur not dissimilar to Uroballus carlei. They live on a diet of lichen, and itās this diet that gives them their name.

āWhat if poor people abuse the system?ā
The system intrinsically abuses poor people.
Hope this helps.
"What if poor people abuse the system?"
Rich people abuse the system far more and out of pure greed, not necessity or desperation so idrc about that
i suggest making a new system
I forgot to eat dinner so I'm having 11 pm corn on the cob. This counts as a meal
... It's possible that I really need to do some grocery shopping
Okay for those of you living in pitiful ignorance, take a raw ear of corn with the husk on and cut all the way around the base (as pictured: above the point where the husk meets the cob, so that the entire husk is severed but still wrapped around the corn. Do not cut through the cob.) Then, with the husk still on, microwave it for 5-7 minutes. It'll basically steam it inside the husk. Remove from microwave --it will be hot, so use a mitt or a towel--and firmly pull the top of the husk/silk, which should come off easily in one piece, unsheathing a flawless corn on the cob. If it doesn't, you probably need to cut a little higher around the base, so all the leaves are severed. No picking off silk!
For the nonbelievers (and for me, a second corn)
This website works so well
been reading cicero's rant about words being given obscene meanings and i don't think i've ever seen a latin sentence that made me burst into such immediate and violent laughter before
had a couple people be like "i have no idea what this means" so to clarify: the word penis in latin originally meant tail and only later got the sense of, uh. penis. so this is cicero complaining that nowadays all these hooligans are using the word "penis" for naughty purposes
Thank you for this post, I will be showing it to every boomer who ever complains about how the kids these days are butchering the language.
the idea that restrooms, locker rooms, etc need to be single-sex spaces in order for women to be safe is patriarchy's way of signalling to men & boys that society doesn't expect them to behave themselves around women. it is directly antifeminist. it would be antifeminist even if trans people did not exist. a feminist society would demand that women should be safe in all spaces even when there are men there.
btw this is maybe the single most key distinguishing feature of the terfy strains of radical feminism, the seed all the rest of it springs out of: they have absolutely no faith in the ability of feminism to actually destroy patriarchy. they do not think feminism can truly build a better world. they cannot really even imagine that possibility. they think patriarchy is an inevitable natural consequence of unchangeable biological facts, and therefore the goal of feminism can only be to mitigate the worst effects of patriarchy, not to get rid of it.
they can imagine a society where women get some designated safe spaces without men around. they cannot imagine a society where the presence of men is not inherently a danger to women.
i have a suggestion
Howard V. Brown (1878-1945), "The Model Workers"
Brown was a really cool 1930s pulp sci-fi magazine artist. This one isnāt sci-fi, but it still might be my favorite work of his! Which is an odd thing to find myself saying, given that ā as longtime readers may have noticed over the 13 years Iāve run this blog ā I really like sci-fi art.
I found more info on it! It's Brown's June 1924 cover to Scientific American.
Here's a larger version of the original artwork, too.
I wonder what structure is being added here.
