How Marvel Translators Lied to my face for Years:
Ok boys and girls, story time.
You may not know this but I'm actually from a little country called Poland. And as such I consumed my first Marvel Media, from movies to shows to comics, translated and dubbed to my native tongue.
I trusted the translators to do a good job.
They did not.
For example.
There is a character in the Marvel Avengers called "Hawkeye". You know him, purple dude with a bow.
So this "Hawkeye", in polish, is called "Sokole Oko" from the word "Sokół".
And, for the longest time, I believed that "Hawk" means "Sokół". Because obviously.
Well no.
That is not at all what it means!
Turns out that "Hawk" is a completely different bird!
So really "Hawkeye" should be called "Jastrzębie Oko"
You wanna know what "Sokół" actually means?
That's right!
That's the polish word for "Falcon"
"But Julie!" I hear you cry. "What about Falcon, the other bird themed Marvel hero who also joins the Avengers?"
Well, my friend, here's where shit gets funny.
Because "Falcon and the Winter Soldier" is a show that exists and, naturally, got streamed here too.
So let's check out the posters shall we?
Let us see what they do with Falcon now that his bird was given to someone else.
And the answer is NOTHING
They left it as is
Bucky's codename got beautifully translated, no complaints there, but not Sam's.
I thought I was going to scream
I don't understand how this works.
Why do some characters like "Batman" and "Iron Man" get to keep their English names while characters like "Homelander" and "Wolverine" get polish versions.
If you're curious: "Homelander" polish name is "Ojczyznosław" and I promise you that it sounds fucking ridiculous and no one should take him seriously. IYKYK.
While "Wolverine", at least in the "X-Men" movies, was translated into "Wilk" which really means "Wolf" and is just plain wrong.
This gave me a headache 😭
first day as a defense attorney! surely nothing bad will happen!
LMAOOOO
I fucking LOVE when Scotty stands up for Spock whenever a crew member is being too hard on him, specifically watched 1x16 where Spock's logical command has been questioned by everyone (except Scotty who's been silently working on repairing their vessel) and one argues with Spock in context of the crewman wanting to bury his friend but Spock says they have to leave the body behind and the crewman calls Spock a machine and Scotty stands up all angry and says "that's enough!" LOOOVE
>:(
whatever, go my rare trio

i just think he's neat
I get so hyped whenever Bones gets a badass moment and a chance to use a one-liner. You go baby girl, give it to them "I'm a healer, but" style.
Scotty was holding the brain cell that day.

Bones totally standing up for Spock, defending him against Kirk. And there are people who claim that McCoy seriously disrespects or even hates Spock. Yeah right. Not!
(TOS Season 1: “The Menagerie, Part I”)
McCoy loves Spock. He loves how he does the right thing, how he is stubborn, and petty sometimes and how he hates to be questioned because McCoy is the very same way. When it comes down to it McCoy can be even more dispassionate than Spock at times. For Spock his choosing to not be emotional is a cultural decision. For McCoy it is a discipline that he needs to be able to tap into to be a great doctor. It has often been played into that Kirk has these two different men who are both brilliant at what they do and very different both advising him. The truth was McCoy and Spock took turns playing their differences up for Kirk’s benefit. Sometimes Kirk needed to hear something as McCoy could present it and sometimes he needed to hear the very same information as Spock would present it.
I finished my McCoy illustration!🤩
This is the second part of my own little comic book cover series. I'm really bad at starting and finishing projects like these, and I actually think this is the furthest I've ever gotten!
