So... I've spoken before about how I used Ozempic, diet, and strategic insulin dosing to fix my diabetes.

But I didn't really "fix" my diabetes. It was just well-managed to the point that I had glucose levels of a non-diabetic.

NOW... I have fixed my diabetes.

I am rather stunned by this development. I was getting mysterious low glucose readings. I thought my CGM was faulty. My glucose levels were not behaving as expected. I was getting rather annoyed that my very predictable glucose management was no longer predictable. In my frustration, I decided to not take any insulin one evening. I didn't want to wake up with a low glucose alarm. So I thought I would just let it run a little high and I'd figure out why my monitor was acting crazy in the morning.

When I woke up the next day, my blood sugar was not high.

It was not low.

It was perfect without injecting any insulin.

I decided to forego my morning dose and see if this was a fluke. I ate my first meal and my blood sugar rose a little bit, and then it fell back to normal.

I decided I needed to do a proper test. I usually eat very few carbs to help me manage spikes. But this time I decided to eat some mini tacos that I still had from before I started this diet. In the before times, they would spike my blood sugar above 200.

I ate the tacos.

I watched my blood sugar climb.

It went from 87 to 100.

Then 110.

Then 120.

It peaked at 125.

And over the next two hours, it gradually decreased back to the 80s.

I fixed my damn pancreas, y'all.

Apparently, a ketogenic diet targets organ fat. And Ozempic can repair metabolic health. Even though I am still 325 pounds, my weight loss tactics were able to clear out the fat in my liver, which rebooted my pancreas.

And now I do not need insulin injections.

At all.

My blood sugar is a little more bouncy, but my average is still around 90 and I do not have giant spikes when I eat carbs.

I have achieved full diabetic remission.

I still have a lot more weight to lose. But I didn't even know this result was possible for me. I've lost more weight than this in the past and never fixed my damn pancreas. But with the Ozempic, I have been able to do this in a much healthier and strategic way.

I just turned 45 a few minutes ago. And I'm not sure there is a better present than a functional pancreas that generates a proper insulin response.

One of my favorite things about having a degree in biochemistry is going undercover at a store like Sephora. I can read the composition of the cosmetics and actually understand them. There’s no words to describe how great it feels. It’s like being in on an inside joke or secret

The main thing I observe is that a lot of employees recommend makeup that is chemically incompatible. For example, if you ask them to recommend you a foundation and concealer, a lot of times they’ll pick two products that are chemically immiscible, so they’ll NEVER blend together successfully.

Generally foundation/concealer is either water or silicone based. There are upsides to each based on your needs. However, water and silicone are immiscible, and so if your foundation is water based but your concealer is silicone based, you will never get a good blend between these products. You’ll have to go back to switch to something that works.

If you want to test for this in-store, mix the two on the back of your hand. If they form a uniform mixture, they’re miscible. If they separate, they’re chemically incompatible, and should not be used together. You can do this for any number of skin products. Primers, moisturizers, foundations, concealers, contour sticks, etc etc. Anything that comes in liquid or paste form.

You don’t need to understand all the chemicals on the label to run this experiment!

As someone in pharmaceutical sciences I also experience similar things, so a hint from me: collagen is useless. In a cream it will not penetrate the skin, so doesn't do anything. As a food supplement, lemme tell you a secret: collagen is a protein. And when you eat protein, your stomach thinks its food and chops it up, so it can be used to make your own protein. Collagen is just expensive protein powder, and doesn't do anything meat or a veggie substitute does.

I'm just going to drop some of my favorite adult 2d animated series that are not bastard ugly and don't rely on projectile vomit and other "gross" jokes to be entertaining (at the very least, they are a far cry from whatever Big Mouth has going on).

1. Scavengers Reign

Scavengers Reign follows three groups of survivors who crash land on an alien planet as they traverse various ecosystems to get to safety. There is a lot of thought put into the flora and fauna they encounter, and it explores their relationships with each other and with the crew members as they are assimilated into the environment. Plus, the art is absolutely beautiful.

Unfortunately, season 2 is very very unlikely to be greenlit (but I'm holding out hope and still think it's worth watching).

2. Pantheon

Pantheon is one that is incredibly underrated. It's about two teenagers uncovering the development of uploaded intelligence, the transfer of human minds into computers. Maddie Kim is a bullied, computer savvy freshman who lost her dad to cancer while Caspian Keyes is an apathetic prodigy living within an abusive household. Overall, it covers themes of grief, love, and what it means to be human. It gets pretty philosophical and mind-fucky at times, and I love how the animation reflects that. Just look at that title sequence:

And thankfully, this one was finished.

3. Inside Job

Inside Job is about an ambitious but overworked engineer working for the shadow government. I'll admit that this can lean into some crass humor/animation, but I think it's well balanced with other aspects of the show. I love the mc's characterization. Reagan is motivated but feels held back by the incompetence of her boss and co-workers. She wants to move through the ranks but has a hard time taking care of herself. She becomes best friends with the male lead, her foil, but never falls in love with him romantically. The series is overall both hilarious and relatable.

This one has also been canceled after the first season :(

4. Creature Commandos

Creature Commandos has a clear comic book style and is about a group of imprisoned nonhumans sent to protect a princess from Circe. Like Inside Job, it can lean into some sexual humor, but it pales in comparison to the show's characterizations. I really only remember their compelling backstories and how each character was affected by them.

It's a short watch of 7 episodes, and season 2 is in production.

5. Bojack Horseman

Bojack is fairly well-known, but I can't not include it. Even though I personally had to adjust to the art style, it's not something I ever thought of as ugly. And the animation at some points is memorable and really highlights the more serious scenes. The comedy is also well-balanced and includes a lot of dry humor and visual gags.

(Just remembered that the first 2 seasons are kind of hard to watch, so I totally understand if it's not worth going through for you)

6. Common Side Effects

This is more of an honorable mention because I've never watched it and I'm a little offput by their faces. However, I do plan on giving it a chance because one of the creators of Scavengers Reign also worked on it.

Adding some anime to this list of animation for adults that is not Beavis and Butthead flavored. These are all from this year. There are already well over a dozen animated shows from 2026 alone that were made with adult audiences in mind. Trailers linked in every title!

Journal With Witch / Ikoku Nikki / Diary of a Strange Land

An unflinching story of a writer taking in the orphaned daughter of the sister she hated. Themes of grief, family, love, and self acceptance. The animation is never flashy but the detailed expressions and careful details kept me riveted. The desert as a metaphor for Asa's grief and loneliness was very moving. This one will hurt you and heal you in the best ways

Botan Kamiina Fully Blossoms When Drunk / Kamiina Botan, Yoeru Sugata wa Yuri no Hana / The Kamina Peony When Fully in Bloom Resembles a Lily

This college slice of life show circles around six roommates navigating their relationships with one another, discussing heady ideas and art, visiting seasonal tourist attractions, and drinking together. The animation on this one is incredible. Each episode director was given free rein to do as they liked, so some episodes are very clean and precise, while others are much more floating or sketchy.

Witch Hat Atelier / Tongari Boushi no Atelier

This one is more all ages than strictly for adults only, but the manga is published in a magazine for adult men. It is some of the most beautiful animation I've ever seen, in a story of complex moral weight and genuine danger as well as delight and discovery.

A Hundred Scenes of Awajima / Awajima Hyakkei

This quiet, contemplative show is a series of interconnected short stories about the lives of the girls who attended a prestigious all-girls boarding school for the performing arts, and of the women they grew up to be. Told out of chronology, we see characters as old women sending their own daughters or granddaughters to Awajima, then as the young girls they used to be. Potential embodied, lives full of triumph and regrets. The art is in soft watercolors, the faces more realistic than anime tends to be.

Now for shows I haven't watched, either because they just started airing or because they were not my thing

Nippon Sangoku

This one wasn't to my personal taste, but the art is stylish and I've heard the storytelling is dense and complex. A second nuclear war and climate change have led to a fractured Japan where modern tech is now in the hands of feudal warlords vying for power.

The World is Dancing

This one is currently airing as I write! A historical drama based on the life of young boy Oniyasha, who would later grow up to be Zeami Motokiyo, the founder of Noh Theater, this gorgeously animated show is also an exploration of the art of dance, of the weight of tradition vs innovation, technical skill vs emotional expression, and why people choose to dance. The art style changes wildly in different parts of the first episode, a visual metaphor applying these questions about dance as an art form to animation as an art form.

Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia / Tenmaku no Jaadugar

I have had this post sitting in my drafts for over a week, waiting to add this last one, which started airing today. Our main character starts our story as a slave girl in a scholar's house, living in a city near the end of the of the Islamic Golden Age. When she is taken captive by a Mongol prince, she must use the knowledge she has to survive in a strange new world.

All this discourse over who does "painting with light"

Hiroshi Nagai's paintings need sunglasses to look at.

They look like how it feels to walk across a parking lot on a 98° summer day without a speck of shade in sight.

They look like heaven but also like you'd burn your bare feet on the ground.

Even when you can see shade you know it's not enough and the minute you step out you'll be burnt to a crisp like a vampire.

And it's BEAUTIFUL

I'll throw in the wonderful Eizin Suzuki into this ring too, a man whose work just breathes light without actually using dynamic lighting in the usual way. It's no surprise both Nagai and Suzuki are both considered prolific in art pertaining to the city pop genre because they're able to paint these kinds of scenes with a delicate touch.

This feels like I could trip on that radio and fall right into that water, feeling the crystal waves as I drop in.

And this, a nice stroll down a resort strip, where my sunscreened skin could literally feel cooked if I leaned too close to the tiling.

And then a nice stretch of summer street, wherein you could see your face in the flushed red of that car provided it didn't blind you from its sunny reflections.

I don't think I even need to say anything more, Suzuki's a massive influence in how he even places colours so warmly in such unorthodox manner. It's a naturally sunkissed talent~ 🌊

whoa wait i actually read the articles and it's so much cooler than just that!!

dude cracked the case about WHY kidneys fail, across the board as far as i can tell. turns out there's a specific molecule whose job it is to attach to waste and signal macrophages to come eat it. it remains inactive in cats for some reason, but the molecule is still there. basically what he's done is found the switch to activate them. this will be profound not only for our domestic babies, but for big cats too - especially cheetahs!

although his research was focused on cats, it's already being used to develop drugs for humans too!

on top of that, since these molecules are tags for waste, this could also dramatically lower the rate of fatty liver disease, liver cancer, urinary crystals, rheumatoid arthritis, and even some neurological cases! like, they're hoping it may have an impact on parkinson's and alzheimers, but it DOES have an impact on stroke recovery. like. holy shit.

furthermore, he's insisting that the feline drug be affordable if and when it rolls out onto the market. he wants this to be something anyone can get for their cat!! idk how much sway he'll have over the human drug, but hopefully enough that it, too, won't be that expensive.

annnnnd in his research that he's still doing for the human side of things, he's found a potential link between this molecule and estrogen. in the 20,000 samples he's tested, women between ages 10 and 29 had the highest amount of this molecule present in their blood (a higher amount means Something Fucky is going on, essentially. There's a higher amount of waste the body is trying to clean out) but it drops down to be almost equal amongst men and women after menopause. it hasn't been looked into yet, but fuck, just the fact it's noted and known and probably WILL be looked into soon??? imagine if this is what leads to figuring out all the various ways the ovaries and uterus fucks with people and how to fix it. or even like, maybe there's something about estrogen that makes it work better. who knows! but it's rad the link is there to be researched :D

man just think, not only could our kitties start living longer, healthier lives, but just maybe dialysis will become as rare and obsolete as the iron lung is for people. what a badass Dr. Toru is!
