tony's chocolonely mildly pisses me off every time i eat it. like yeah i get it ur doing a whole symbolism thing about unfairness and whatever, but its actually SO DIFFICULT to eat fucking. gerrymandered chocolate. your symbolism is ruining my chocolate experience.

Tony's Chocolonely does not ensure a living wage for cocoa workers in West Africa (see 2020 report by Voice Network).

Food Empowerment Project maintains an updated list of chocolate brands they recommend based on the following standards:

transparency about the country of origin for cocoa

if sourced from Western Africa, the workers must own the companies/be in charge of the profits from their labor (this standard is because child labor and slavery have been widely documented for decades in this area)

if sourced from Brazil, the workers must own the company and/or be in charge of the profits from their labor, or the company must be going above and beyond to support the workers and their families (this standard is because "child labor and slavery only recently have been documented in cocoa in Brazil" and they are "giving Brazilian companies that are trying to address the issue by supporting the workers and their families the benefit of the doubt.")

this isn't perfect, obviously, but it is much more grounded in the rights of workers than the various certifications (e.g. Fair Trade, Rainforest Alliance, etc.) you'll see on product packaging

I think it should be noted that the Food Empowerment Project specifically only lists companies making "at least one vegan chocolate product" and that they only ask about the companies' vegan chocolates specifically. Their list is not an exhaustive resource for every type of chocolate.

Before I found that link I was curious as to why I didn't see any Norwegian manufacturers on their list(which makes sense now, as their chocolates are almost exclusively milk chocolate) and looked up where our companies source their chocolate from and found Nidar gets theirs from the Rainforest Alliance and Freia from Cocoa Life, both of which have been under scrutiny for not preventing child labour and not paying farmers a living wage among other things. So it appears Norwegian chocolate is out of the ethical picture.

I stated this in the comments of the post already, but it’d probably be better to add it as a reblog, so it’s more visible and doesn’t need to be restated by anyone else in the future.

So, Tony’s allied with Barry Callebut to get its cocoa. Barry Callebut is one of the biggest chocolate companies in the world, and it is unethical, obviously. This led to Tony’s revealing in February 2022 that 1701 child laborers were in their supply chain. Barry Callebut had over 21K at the time. Both of those numbers have risen, and Tony’s has outright admitted they don’t give a fuck about child labor laws when asked about it, content to let children to continue farming their cocoa instead of actually doing the activism they claim to do. About a week ago, Tony’s joined Barry, Nestle and Ferrero in pushing against the reinstatement of important EUDR deforestation legislations. Under that regulation that they pushed against, they would’ve had to be more transparent about their supply chains for their more key ingredients - So Tony’s is lobbying against the exact thing they claim to stand for. Do you truly see what is happening here in Gaza right now, or are you choosing to ignore it?

Did you see the video of the little girl earlier? How were you able to continue your day after seeing it? How can anyone witness all of this and then return to their life as if nothing happened? I can’t anymore. I feel like my mind is going to break from the weight of everything we experience every single day.

I am exhausted by this life. The days we are living now are no different from the days of war; they are exactly the same. The same attacks, the same suffering, the same hospitals filled with wounded people, the same cries of children, and the same fear that follows us every moment.

What hurts me more than anything is that the world has become used to these scenes. Images of children, the dead, and hospitals overflowing with the injured pass in front of everyone without anything changing. Yet if a cat were harmed somewhere else in the world, hearts would break, social media would be filled with sadness, and aid campaigns would begin. Treat our children with the same compassion you show your animals, at least.

I am tired of posting, tired of speaking, tired of shouting, as if our voices no longer reach anyone.

We are completely under siege. The crossings are closed, and we are not allowed to travel or escape. The sea is closed, and the sky above us is filled only with aircraft that continue to strike us without stopping. Even the ability to leave is no longer something we have.

Where is the law the world speaks about? Where is justice? Where are the religions that call for mercy? Where is the human conscience? Why have the hearts of the world become so hardened? Why has everyone become accustomed to these scenes coming every day from Gaza’s hospitals?

Please… this is a plea from a person living through this pain. Write, share, speak, do anything. Do not remain silent.

In today's linguistics class we talked about metaphors, and we really want two of the ones we talked about to become conventionalised.

So first of all this one girl told us about a newer metaphor in Russian, "I have paws", which is something you say when you don't really want to do something, so you say you're incapable of doing it since you have paws instead of hands. Like, "hey, finish that report" "aw but I have paws :(" and I think that's adorable. It has "I'm just a girl" energy without the misogyny.

We also had the task to invent a novel metaphor and have the others guess what it means, and the teacher really liked my "she's such a capybara" = "everyone loves her". Capybara energy is like golden retriever energy except you're chill about it. You're just vibing and everyone digs that.

Shoutout to that mother for shooting that pedophile in the head! I hate that all of the discourse that I’ve been seeing regarding the horrific incident have just been posts upon posts of weirdos blaming the child, and calling her “fast,” (the black community’s favorite default when it comes to defending preds going after young black girls specifically…. But I digress 🥀) when that grown ass man (she is 13, he WAS 20) was hiding underneath her bed at 1am 🗿. You’re legit rationalizing the abuse of a child in defense of a grown adult when you speak like this about children.

Adultification harms brown children disproportionately, but black children specifically are the usual victims of adultification. It’s like people can SEE the innocence of a child when they’re pale, but let them have a bit of melanin, and that same 13 year old is called everything but a child of god, while in the same breath, the predators in question will be seen as the poor saps who just got “caught up in some bullshit.”

This is the same line of thinking that gets black children automatically labeled as adults who should know better. There’s no way that a 9 year old looks like an adult male, even from a distance. You can always tell when a child is a child by how they present themselves, and how they even speak. But these people see that black skin, and already assume that that child is up to no good, that they’re breed for violence, for promiscuity, etc.

Also, the pred that got his shit blew off was exposed for already engaging with other little girls, even going as far as to follow them, and continuously engage with their posts on social media. It would be extremely difficult to not notice how young the little girls he was talking to were because yes, of course, they very obviously did not look like adults!
