think it's a deep consolation to know that spiders dream, that monkeys tease predators, that dolphins have accents, that lions can be scared silly by a lone mongoose, that otters hold hands, and ants bury their dead. that there isn't their life and our life. nor your life and my life. that it's just one teetering and endless thread and all of us, all of us, are entangled w it as deep as entanglement goes. v neat i think.
When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the universe.
- John Muir, Scottish-born American naturalist, 27 July 1869

“Dad, the spouse and I both have meetings at nine, could you take the lead on child supervision? Play some legos, watch some YouTube, maybe describe the uses of some of your tools?”
“Sure!” my dad said. “YouTube or Legos, right?”
Fifteen minutes later I’m arguing a point of nonprofit law on the deck and I look over to see my child holding a propane torch and my dad carefully explaining which plants are weeds growing between pavers that the child can set on fire and which ones are there on purpose.

i love this site so fuckin much.
I went to a library book sale this weekend and I found a very old book called “Electronic Life: How to Think About Computers,” which was published in I think 1975? I’ve been reading it kind of like how I would read a historical document, and it’s lowkey fascinating
There’s a whole paragraph that’s like “okay, find the keyboard. Don’t panic if it has more keys than a typewriter, that’s normal. Really, it’s fine. The extra keys don’t make things harder. It’s FINE”
Thought this section was particularly interesting:
Can the computer create something? At first glance it seems obvious that it can. Animated computer graphics, with their fluid transitions and whiplash perspectives, look strikingly new. And if one watches the machine doing animation work, there seem to be lengthy periods when the computer is acting “on its own.”
But if one observes these processes in more detail, it becomes clear that creation is not occurring within the machine. First of all, computer graphics are not unique. Computers have yet to generate anything that cannot be done by hand—and usually already has been done. Second, the apparent ability of the computer to “act on its own” is the outcome of thousands of hours of patient human effort to refine its instructions. The computer can manipulate a shape for us if we have already informed it what a shape is, what the rules for shape manipulation are, what this specific shape is, and so forth.
You can start an automobile engine and it will run by itself, too, but that doesn’t mean it’s being creative. It’s just running.
Somebody in 1975 had a better understanding of why artificial intelligence is not in any way “intelligence” than the majority of today’s intellectual minds.
its Thursday so i get to post the one meme i made this year

It is interesting to me that there are so many people who love meat but hate butchery.
This isn't about someone or something specific, I'm just remembering growing up with people who would denounce deer hunting with one hand and eat a burger with the other. Or people who would stereotype butchers as creepy and evil and the job of a butcher as evil, and then order chicken tenders.
I have a lot of thoughts and opinions on meat. Sometimes I feel like I am studying fellow meat eaters in a lab. Trying to understand where these curious contradictions come from like picking apart tangled headphone wires.
"I can't eat rabbits they're too cute, and eating dogs is disgusting because they're too smart and friendly" they say while eating a ham and cheese sandwich. Interesting. I put a drop of sugar water in their enclosure to encourage them to hang out in the open so I may study them further.
Sometimes people get like a snag in their head about specific jobs, like- "*I* would never do that job because it is gross or degrading and only horribly fucked up and evil people do that... But I still want to benefit from other people doing that job! I just don't think they should be respected, fairly compensated, or treated well for it!"
My sincere opinion is that I think there are a lot of people out there who would be happier if they were vegetarian or if they reduced the amount of meat they eat, because right now they're only okay with meat so long as they can stay as removed from the process of killing and butchering as possible.
