its so wild how dismissive ppl are about medieval bubonic plague PPE. that shit was seriously so fucking smart and we act like it doesn't count, bc people back then conceptualized the routes by which it worked differently than we do now. ppl just act like essentially it's an example of fundamentally getting something "wrong," and any benefits the PPE had must therefore have been incidental? when modern PPE for so many things has barely advanced from that very design, aside from materials and small details? BONKERS. BONKERS way to act about a technology that we have only improved on rather than rendered obsolete by reason of developing an alternative that is better. hubris, thy name is "human beings who are alive currently"

They were wrong about a lot, naturally, but the core belief of how plague spread was "bad air" or the Miasma Theory.

While the *Bubonic* plague is zoonotic, the more deadly pneumonic plague definitely spread from person to person and was the most infectious. And you know what's good for that? Masks! Which also work with the miasma theory!

They also had quarantining! By 1578, Queen Elizabeth's "Orders Thought Meete" had detailed laws on how people quarantined and even how those who weren't quarantined were punished (the stocks). At that time, her plague laws actually discarded the (still-popular) Miasma Theory for the Contagion Theory, much closer to Germ Theory.

No animal's value should ever be based on how it helps humans; with that being said, leeches are so cool and good for medicine and are very underappreciated!

Their saliva has Hirudin, an anticoagulant, as well as lots of other super cool proteins!

Medical leeches provide leech therapy, helping blood circulate as they draw blood, meaning they can prevent loss of tissue (the protein in their saliva helps).

Leeches don't need to eat often, many species can go up to 18 months without needing to feed.

They are segmented worms, have three jaws, and are hermaphroditic.

Medical leeches are one of many types of animals that are still endangered. Love the humble leech so she may live.

They are indeed very cute and silly which makes them the best little guys out there (source: me).
