In about an hour and a half (6:00 PM EST) these four babes will be available in my shop ✨
ayo did everyone have a ridiculously specific, redneck built playground game in elementary school or am I gonna sound like a goddamn space alien in order to explain what the hell shlockey is
did a lil googling it's also called box hockey apparently
so you play with hockey pucks on these
which you can build with a pile of scrap wood and some basic dad-shed style tools (saws, hammers, etc)
you can make the sticks by either chopping off the ends of old broken hockey sticks or repurposing old ringette sticks (i just realized that ringette may ALSO be sorta niche you're gonna have to google that one)
and the game is super self explanatory. stand on either side and try to get your puck in the opposing players goal to your left while defending your own
different kids liked to have different rituals to symbolize puck drop, i think the elementary school I went to favored balancing the puck on the wall in the middle and tapping sticks three times
tbh i thought this was more widespread but apparently its DEEPLY specific to sourthern ontario???
hello??
can i get other canadianblr on this so i can survey???
It looks a lot like shoebuck which is my pronunciation of the Dutch word iirc. Similar size box with Puck size sliders and holes at one end that you have to get them through to score. Dangerous game, because pucks would fly.
Here:
Sjoelbak or Sjoelen or Dutch Shuffleboard Rules. Traditional Dutch table game Sjoelbak - comprehensive instructions for friendly play
okay so from what i gathered, a couple of bits of info:
there are people from the same region of ontario that I'm from that have never heard of it, but there ARE some americans (midwest??) that have seen it.
there are also folks who've seen it but outside of a school context
a handful of folks are bringing up these shuffleboard style games but i NEED to emphasize that shlockey is NOT about skill as much as brute strength in wrestling the puck with the stick into the opposing goal. visually they may look similar but skillwise sjoelbak is much closer to cornhole (precision aim, general dexterity, no direct interaction with game pieces after they leave your hand, etc) than shlockey
cornhole is more prevalent than i thought
what the hell is tractor pull
wait wait lets do this properly. the results so far seem highly oriented around southern canada and northern US so I'll craft this survey around regions that touch that border area.
have you played/heard of shlockey? (sorry for non-canadians that haven't but I know it'll spiders georg my stats if I include that option)

The lil old lady I petsit sometimes. She is roughly 16, believe it or not! She’s in great condition for her age, teeth are still nice too.
Wild cause her owner does like The Bare Minimum. But I got her to start staying on top of nail trims better in between when I get the chance to do them.
We are heading towards an absolute knowledge black hole, aren't we?

For more than 85 years, Tractor Supply has been focused on one thing…serving Life Out Here. Every day our 50,000 Team Members take care of o
We will no longer be purchasing the feed corn for our heating pads from Tractor Supply Company.
We have purchased all of the corn that fills our heating pads from TSC since 2017, but given this... uh... statement... we will no longer be doing business with TSC in any way. The idea that "rural values" preclude the existence of our embracing of minorities and queer people is profoundly ridiculous.
Our company's rural roots are strong: Jake & Spider grew up in NE PA's coal country on a dirt road & in a house heated by a wood stove. We are the descendants of immigrant coal miners and farmers. Our great-great-grandfather put up a swing in the middle of the single room of their Northwest Territories home because it was too cold for our great-grandmother to go outside to play. Our grandfather was a breaker boy. Our cousins still raise corn and pigs in Iowa. And that's just Spider and Jake!
Painting "diversity" as alien to rural values is not only incorrect, it's insulting to everyone who lives in a rural area who isn't white, cishet and Christian - and there are an awful lot of us. This is, of course, the point. They've decided that it's fashionable to turn away from us, to make clear No Queers Allowed, and so it's only right that we return the favor.
Please bear with us as we shift suppliers. If you have an outstanding heating pad order with us, it may be slightly delayed.
The fact that TSC seems to have forgotten that rural America is full of POC, not to mention members of the queer community is…disgusting to say the least.
When my husband and I saw this statement on Thursday we immediately started talking about a plan of where we would go to get the things we buy from TSC. Unfortunately we live in a, you guessed it, rural community, and TSC is the only name in town.
Recently I’ve been ordering a lot of my basic horse supply’s from Big Dee’s because their prices are the best, but when it comes to bulk items, TSC is where we go. Sigh.

the way i meant to reblog this on my dog blog whoops
Yellow eyes are a fault in a lot of dog breeds, but I don't think I've ever seen a yellow eyed dog
You know, it's funny you should say that because iirc Moxie's eyes are light enough to photograph yellow in some lights? (I think Ever's are green.) Yellowness can absolutely be a function of lighting and a contracted pupil, and I often see light browns photographing as gold or yellow. Matilda has eyes that I would call medium/light brown, and she often looks much lighter in some lights than others.
Liver, especially in conjunction with ee yellow or sable, often produces yellow eyes. Because it is a common prejudice, though, finding yellow eyes in dog populations in high proportions often means looking at populations that haven't much been selected much on for color in the past.
Which means, funnily enough, that one of the dog breeds I often associate most with yellow eyes is border collies! (Then Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, particularly in the "dead grass" color less popular with conformation folks; with curs especially black mouth and catahoula curs, with heelers... English shepherds...etc.)
I suspect based on nothing but gut association that light eyes were pretty common in the British herding cur landrace, actually; Chessie eyes will just be absence of selection against yellow and toward green and hazel in liver based dogs, but the rest of those dogs have long histories of breeding outside the conformation ring and sizable British Isles herding cur influence.
Now add to that the moral panics common in turn of the century dog spaces particularly with respect to appearance denoting character, plus the point at which different breed categories are incorporated into the burgeoning dog fancy. Think about how late herding breeds joined that very British-Empire-inflected party relative to gundogs and hounds and terriers, and think about what the cultural ambivalence around "collies gone bad" was at the time: the wolfish, slashing-biting stock killer and man-biter, right?
It just wouldn't surprise me if that was an association people had made through the nineteenth century, which then became a target for breeding away from as part of promoting the dogs in the more culturally respectable arena of the dog fancy. Wouldn't surprise me in the least.
I usually call this "amber" but it's pretty yellow. No color editing in this pic, in brighter light it's even more visible. I keep my house pretty dark because The Migraine.
In cockers her color isn't just acceptable, it has a name (liver on cream, "golden")--but of course her white & freckles are disqualifying, even if she weren't completely off standard for being a wocker.
My breed is a dark eyed preferred (no blue eyes allowed) breed.
I personally think the preference in dark eyes for many breeds is multifaceted.
First, wild canines more often than not have lighter eyes where the pupils are more easily seen. This gives an intense look to the eye. When dogs have a darker eye and the pupil cannot be seen it gives a less wild appearance and we all know us humans are drawn to neonatal features, so to me a dark eye gives a more "baby" look to the dog's overall expression.
Secondly, to bring this around to a conversation i just had on my blog, dark eyes are less sensitive to sunlight and glare while light eyes are more susceptible to sun damage. For breeds that originate in either very warm or very arctic climates I can see why dark eyes might become more common in those areas. Yes, I know everybody is going to say "but what about huskies?" and my answer to that is while blue and light eyes exist both in the registered Siberian Husky breed and the indigenous Chukotka Sled Dog the Siberian originates from, a majority of those Chukotka sled dogs in their native region still being bred to pull sleds have dark eyes, a majority of working Siberians have dark eyes, a majority of Alaskan Huskies have dark eyes. Generally, when I think of dogs with lighter eyes, or two blue eyes we're seeing breeds/types from cloudier regions with less need to shield their eyes from sunlight (such as Merle coated herding breeds in Northern Europe and the United Kingdom). Not to say this is proven or a hard rule on the matter since dog eye colors of all kinds can be found around the world, but it is something i've observed.
Thirdly, I 100% think that light brown eyes in a certain light can look yellow. Especially when those are compared to or seen next to their darker brown peers:
(photos taken on the same day).
This was a former dog of mine, many years ago, and he is what I think of when I hear ‘yellow’ eyes.
Personally I love them! We have a client dog at my kennel who has bright yellow eyes with black rims and I call them her Lion Eyes because it truly does give the impression of a predator.
i forgot for so long that sometimes you just have to trust your dog. i was so worried for so long about having Turtle off leash, but i took that leap of faith and he does just fine. he sticks close by and checks in often, recalls when called. i was so stressed for nothing lol
setting everyone the assigned homework of learning about a native hymenoptera (bee, wasp, ant) pollinator that’s local to you. tell me about them. so many cool pollinators get drowned out by honeybee visibility.

i'll never say this publicly but honestly i think tigerstar had some valid ideas about having one big clan. obviously he was super wrong with all the violence and force, but one big clan could solve a lot of issues. No more border patrol fighting, more food for everyone during leaf-bare season, no drama involving cross-clan mates, etc etc. a lot of deaths could be avoided if we all took care of one another instead of fighting all the time

That's not what they meant and you KNOW it. They brought up some valid points about preserving lives, and denounced Tigerstar's actions as much too violent. Starclan above, no cat can have an opinion these days...

Honestly I don't know how I feel about this... each Clan is beautifully unique and has their own traditions, which would fade away if Clans were desolved altogether. But OP makes a valid point about less violence and food scarcity. I hate the idea of sending my kits off to become Warriors, only for them to die during a stupid argument about Sunningrocks. A pile of rocks is NEVER worth a cat's life, whether they are in your Clan or not. And we have lost lives like that before.
🍄 medicinepawz Follow
I agree! Traditions are important, but every medicine cat knows that working together saves lives. Sharing herbs can stop the spread of greencough, and sharing prey stops kits from crying from hunger. We really need a better system, because I can't cry myself to sleep another night, blaming myself for not having enough cobwebs to stop a kit from bleeding out in front of me.

leave it to a woman and a medicine cat to emotionally manipulate proud warriors into giving up our PURECLAN bloodlines and Clan patriotism lolol

Random fact: Although jumping spiders can't move their eyes, they can move their retinas to change their field of view. It's as if they're looking through a window.
If the spider is clear enough, you can even see the retinas moving through the cephalothorax:
Image sources: Melvyn Yeo, M.F. Land, and wmaddisn
And this is how we know that jumping spiders dream!
Scientists at Harvard observed that jumping spiders' retinas move as they sleep, proving that jumping spiders have periods of REM (rapid eye movement) aka dreaming sleep!
Jumping spiders also twitch their limbs as they sleep, just like a dog or cat "running" in their sleep.
potentially unpopular opinion but i don’t care if someone is breeding off standard colors as long as they are doing it ethically
