“A new phenomenon emerged after George Floyd, that of the anti-racism reading list: compilations of books and authors and media intended to serve as guides for white people wanting to educate themselves about anti-Black racism. Spanning genre and form and era, I understood both the logic and the appeal. There is a belief in some quarters that racism is simply a matter of ignorance, and that everyone can therefore be educated out of it (which I suppose is easier to stomach than the idea that racism might be something more conscious, or deliberate). And so the work of the anti-racism reading list begins, like a counter-missionary attempting to decolonise what was previously colonised. There is of course much to be gained from white people more fully understanding the history and intricacies and complex topography of racism, but I often worry that the exercise of anti-racism reading encourages white people to satify - even exhaust - themselves with swotting up on the semantics of the struggle, without necessarily translating that knowledge into real-world action. It’s relatively easy to be a theoretical anti-racist. Writing for The Atlantic, Saida Grundy observes that consciousness-raising through anti-racist reading often constitutes ‘mere filibustering - white people learning about their privilege and power without ever having to sacrifice either’, that it can actually undermine progress ‘by presenting increased knowledge as the balm for centuries of abuse’, and that ‘literature and dialogue cannot supplant restorative social policies and laws, organisational change, and structural redress’. In presenting these lists as the solution to racism, there is a danger that an academic understanding of racism becomes the end goal, rather than anything more substantive or action-focused.”

two equally delightful paths here:
1) a very simple and genuine “i like your shoelaces”, which tells me that you are either a lesbian or a very cool ally
2) “i like your shoelaces” followed by the pronounced grimace of one recalling their past sins, which tells me that you were a 2012 tumblr user. i now hold the power in this conversation and you are at my mercy.
if you know about 2012 tumblr how do you hold any power in any conversation

im not even joking rn this fucking painting made me start uncontrollably sobbing. Do you know how long it took to paint? How expensive it was? The cat was content for hours and so loved that the girl held him there and paid for him to be painted with her. Imagine having such a bond… imagine being so loved and loving so much back…
Apparently this is almost a genre of painting. Its human nature to love and cradle cats …. And the bond these cats and their people have. To sit together for hours to get a painting to attempt to immortalize the love you two shared
I just binged twilight and holy shit i love enjoying media i thought was cringy when i was a tween
One of my favorite parts of the Hunger Games was how, in the beginning, Katniss was jealous amd resentful of the townies for not having to work in the coal mines. Then, over time, she realizes they aren't the true enemy. Then she sees the other district kids as so much better off than she is, because at least they don't come from district 12. But then she realizes they aren't the enemy either. And then she hates the other victors, before realizing they have all been exploited just as much as she has. So the enemy must be the Capitol citizens, who benefit from the exploitation of the districts, right? Wrong again. They are just uninformed and pampered people who have been kept in the dark about the true horrors faced by the rest of the country. Most of them, when push comes to shove, are perfectly willing to help the war efforts.
And slowly, over the three books, all theses separate factions of downtrodden people start to see each other as allies instead of enemies, and that is what propells them to eventual victory over the true enemy, the government that tried to pit them against each other. Just fun, totally fictional things to think about that have nothing whatsoever to do with our current life.
