world where lines of succession and first-born are extremely important (not just for royalty, but also for common folk, but more emphasis is placed on royalty) because when you die, you can choose to stay behind as a ghost. except only your firstborn child can see and hear you.

royal families are built on this, with long lines of ghosts standing behind whoever the current ruler is. craftspeople who always have their parents in their ear telling them exactly how to be perfect.

this is consistent; a ghost can only see the ghosts it would have been able to see in life, so passing information from generations past is always a game of telephone.

of course this whole thing can be bluffed and exploited in a variety of extremely fun ways.

of course this causes Complications for murder plots: if you kill someone you better be damn sure that your victim either doesn’t know it was you or doesn’t have a kid, or else you can also kill the kid.

of course, if you kill the lord of a particular region and his first born says that reluctantly his father had not seen his killer and has no information, you feel great. you did it! scott free!

until some fucker from across the sea (from a country the lord had, unfortunately, visited and was fond of in his youth) shows up to point the finger squarely at you and unearth roughly 60 years worth of lineage drama

firstborn twins (or triplets ect) are a special case because all children born at the same time will be able to see the ghost. this gives twins an incredibly gift for communication — they can be very distant, physically, and their ghost relative can communicate between both of them. the only downside is that the ghosts do need to travel from one twin to another, which takes time, but absolutely no one can stop them as they do

the differences in grief/mourning between firstborn and other children. you will always have your parents with you and your siblings will never see or hear them again. some of the people you love will stay with you but not nearly enough of them. your best friend’s child looks at you with solemn eyes and tells you that your friend misses you and you are deeply, burning jealous. your older sibling always has their head cocked like they’re listening to your parents give them advice that you will never get. it’s not for you. it’s never been for you.

and on the flip side. you estrange yourself from your parent but it’s not enough because they get to die and haunt you forever. their parents get to die and haunt them forever. you adopt a child who listens more to the ghosts in her ear than you and you never have a child of your own and your ghosts scream at you until after the day you die

In case anyone hasn't heard, the cyclospora outbreak affecting tons of people in the US right now is coming from Taylor Farms produce. Best to stay away from bagged lettuce and prepared salads completely right now, but especially the ones mentioned in the screenshot:

This is not the first time I've heard about a Taylor Farms foodborne illness outbreak. I stopped eating their salads after reading a description of the conditions in their facilities. Doesn't sound like they've improved anything.

We need a fully funded and staffed FDA, and regulations with teeth - and that's exactly what we don't have under Trump. To make things worse, the CDC is no longer tracking these outbreaks. We're on our own.

Real thing that changed how i write: I started asking "what does this character think is wrong with them" and separately "what is actually wrong with them." Those two things are almost never the same. She thinks she's too much. She's actually terrified of being too little. He thinks he's bad at commitment. He's actually just never met someone he trusted enough. The gap between their diagnosis of themselves and the real thing, that's your character arc right there. you don't have to explain it. just write both.

Fuck this job man, I sentenced this guy called Theseus to life in prison for murder and then I get a call from the prison that he has systematically replaced every organ in his body including his brain and is now claiming he is not the same person who committed the crime. They are letting him go free, fuck this. Worst of all is he also then took all of the parts that he discarded and made a second Theseus who is also claiming he did not commit the crime and they are also being let free. Now there's two of them out there and you just KNOW they are murdering people and then having gay sex. I fucking quit man...

There’s a quality that certain books/movies/TV shows have that leads me to say, “Yeah, I can see people making fanfiction of that.” It’s something to do, I think, with how tight the story is, how much feels open-ended or like it could be elaborated on.

Something like Breaking Bad, for example, has low squiggability (that’s what I’m calling this quality). It’s tightly written, the characters are consistent, there’s little left to interpolate or extrapolate. Obviously, people DO write fanfic of Breaking Bad, but it still has a low squiggability score. Whereas something like Supernatural has a high squiggability score. Fantasy and science fiction often have high squiggability scores. This suggests squiggability could also be related to worldbuilding and potential for people to borrow a premise or setting.

And sometimes you’ll read or watch something and you’ll say, “Ah, low squiggability,” and then you’ll open tumblr and find out that everyone else seem to think its squiggability was very high indeed.
