Analysis of the song "All that Matters" PT2. Character Psychology Analysis : YANG XIAO LONG

"All that Matters" can never fail to make me cry 😔😢😭 I feel Yang's agony like it's my own.... Feel every emotion she's felt during those times she was in the dark, when she didn't know Blake's side of the story. It's palpable

"I feel like I'm running out of energy

While you just take everything in stride

The way I feel to you it's no big deal"

To feel this way about someone you really love and care for is just so excruciating. And Yang had to suffer this pain. SHE IS JUST SO FUCKING VULNERABLE, BUT SHE HAS THE INNATE AND EXCEPTIONAL ABILITY TO HIDE IT ALL BEHIND A DIGNIFIED BEHAVIOUR.

That the one thing I can count on

Is that I can't count on you"

She was always there for Blake, there is nothing she wouldn't do for Blake....but Blake failed to reciprocate that, thus leading Yang to not trust her so easily. Blake wasn't there when Yang needed her the most. Why do you think Yang got mad when Blake said "I'll protect you" in the barn in V6? For this very reason. Blake can't just come back in Yang's life like nothing happened (or so it seems to Yang given the bridge of the song)

Yang had to fight her own battle, with the demons in her head that screamed deprecating and disparaging words at her. She had to  unbreak herself, bring herself back from the dead. ALL BY HEARSELF (and with Tai's help). Blake wasn't there for her, and Yang surely doesn't need Blake's "protecting" now, after she stood back up and is stronger and smarter than ever before

But you know why Yang didn't say any of this? Yes, she resented Blake. Yes, Blake hurt her, a lot. But she LOVES Blake too much to hurt her with these words. Cause deep down she knew, she FELT, that Blake didn't do it intentionally, even though she THOUGHT otherwise.

This isn't a Blake hate post, I'm just trying to explain Yang's psychology, a character psychological analysis, if you will.

Snippet from something bigger I'm planning to write

So, I was washing dishes when a conversation played out in my head. Imagine the setting -- a quaint coffee shop in a small town in a foreign country. A chilly autumn breeze creeps in as the door opens, but in walks a ray of sunshine wrapped in a leather jacket and woolen scarf. "A hot chocolate to go" the stranger says, her voice raspy but warm. The barista gets caught off guard by the stranger's scintillating grin and evidently enthusiastic demeanor despite the cold autumn morning. "Can I get a name?" she asks, raising a plastic cup and focusing on her pen to hide the unsolicited blush forming on her cheeks. "Florence" "And how do you spell that?" "F-L-O-R-E-N-C-E", her smile never falters. She tucks her hands in her pockets and looks around the café. Her eyes landed on the barista in front of her, and she had to admit, she was a beauty to behold. Sharp jawlines, ocean blue eyes, blonde luscious locks, and a smile that could melt the Arctic icebergs. "Mind if I ask you yours? It's only fair" Florence blurts out. The barista stares at her for a while with a quirked eyebrow, making Florence rethink all her life choices all at once... She leans forward on the counter, a smirk forming on her lips "Hmm...I asked you yours cause it's part of my job." "Right, right." Florence mutters out, the tip of her nose dusting in red. She quickly averts her eyes from the blonde's to save herself from more embarrassment. Seconds pass in silence as the blonde works Florence's order. She couldn't help but peek at the leather jacketed, buff, dark haired woman on the other side of the counter. Something about her screamed trouble, but for all the right reasons. "So...I haven't seen you around before." "Yeah, moved here a couple of days ago." Florence replied as soon as the blonde finished. "GREAT, way to be nonchalant, Flo, good job." "Oh? And what were you doing the last two days?" the blonde asks in a playful tone, finally turning toward the brunette, the coffee cup in one hand. "Settling in, getting my bearings, scouting." Florence replies sheepishly, stepping closer to the counter. "Hmmm, scouting for what exactly?" the blonde prodded, tilting her head to one side. The smirk back in place. "I don't know...shops, restaurants...cafes with pretty baristas..." Florence’s voice drops as she leans forward, her eyes locking with the blonde's. The blonde's brows shoot up as her mouth falls slightly open. She wasn't expecting that after seeing how easily flustered the brunette had gotten earlier. But she isn't gonna let her win either. "The name's Waverly" she handed the brunette her coffee. "Thank you, Waverly." Florence takes the cup. They both linger for a little while longer, until the customer behind clears their throat. Florence quickly scurries off toward the door as Blake starts taking their order. Before waking out, Florence looks back one more time, and catches the blonde already looking at her...

Yang: Alright, Yang. You got this. It might be early, but you can do this. You're just.... planning for the future. (Takes a deep breath and enters Shade Academy's library where Ghira is reading over reports) Afternoon, Sir.

Ghira: Yang, this is a pleasant surprise. What brings you in? And, again, it's Ghira.

Yang: Right... (clears her throat) Ghira, if I might be blunt?

Ghira: (blinks) Of course. But, what is this all about?

Yang: (blushing and solidifies her resolve) I want to ask Blake to marry me.

Ghira: (blinks silently)

Yang: N-Not now! Obviously, things are still new and... well, we're in a war.... But once everything calms down and we find a new normal, I want to propose.

Ghira: .......And why are you bringing this up to me?

Yang: I... uh... kind of feel like I need to ask for your blessing. I get that the relationship between humans and faunus isn't exactly stellar. But it is getting better, and I want to prove that I mean business when I say I love Blake and would never in my wildest nightmares do anything to hurt her.

Ghira: (arches an eyebrow) This isn't just because I'm the Chieftain of the largest settlement of Faunus in Remnant and you want a badge of approval to hide behind?

Yang: (confused stare) What? That's a thing? Absolutely not! You're her father, for dust's sake! I want to let you know my intentions with your daughter and ask for your blessing! Blake might be the first person I've ever loved, but I'm a woman who knows what she wants. And I want to love her for the rest of our lives and make her happy. And once I'm done here, I'm gonna go do this whole thing with Mrs. B too!

Ghira: (blinks for the fifth time) Then why come to me first?

Yang: .....Honestly, you're the first one I found.

Ghira: (Chuckles softly) Well, I wouldn't worry about my wife. If anything, I'd avoid telling her your intentions because she can't keep a secret. Granted, I don't think that's going to matter.

Yang: What... do you mean?

Ghira: (motions towards the door)

Yang: (glances at the door)

Blake: (standing shell-shocked in the doorway with a tray of tea)

Yang: (awkwardly) H-Hey, Blakey! Uh, how much of that did you hear???

Blake: (glances at Ghira)

Ghira: (nods in approval)

Blake: (practically throws the tray down on a table and nearly tackles Yang to the floor) I love you, and when the time comes. I will absolutely marry you.

Yang: (volume 9 post tackle look and softens as she hugs Blake back) I love you too.

You ever think about the social anxiety Yang will have when she moves to Kuo Kuana with Blake about being on an island filled with Faunus who have been ostracized by humanity only to completely nail fitting in because of who she is?

All the time lol. Yang will be anxious but she and Blake are also going to be heroes, not to mention openly embraced by Blake's parents and yeah, like you said, Yang is Yang and it's nearly impossible to dislike someone that kind and earnest.

I kind of feel like the people of Menagerie will consider her one of their own in no time.

Anyone taking issue with the idea that Yang only has Blake as her first love, cause of thinking of Yang as some womanizer or anything other than "falls rarely but falls hard" type has no clue about her damn character. Everything about Yang screams that she's a one-person at a time falls HARD absolute disaster type. Then again the dumbass party girl that presumably sleeps around bullshit is still around vs. what I'd say is the more accurate to canon idea that she just enjoys the club scene which fits with her maturity and having taken care of Ruby. Yang hasn't even shown interest in any other characters aside from Blake (and no non-serious/joke/teasing v1 scene that's never reinforced or brought up again doesn't factor into this either). You want a sapphic playgirl, there's Coco who it actually fits (credit to hadesisqueer for bringing this to my mind); not Yang.

Like it makes absolute sense for Blake to be Yang's one and only love. GTFO it.
