this is a video of Chris Morganroth, a Quileute elder, canoe-builder, language teacher, and a fantastic storyteller. he is wearing a shirt covered in pictures of wolves: his cousin made it for him! this is a recording of a 2012 speech at the Smithsonian. it is about an hour long. it is so worth it.
(big thanks to @twilightphasepodcast, who cited this as a resource in their latest episode, which was how i found it!)

Political streamer Hasan Piker, one of the most influential voices in progressive online media, has drawn criticism after suggesting that California State Sen. Scott Wiener (D) should have anticipated a hostile reception at San Franciscoâs Trans March because of his past positions on Israel.
Piker, a self-described progressive with a massive online following who has experienced a surge of influence within the Democratic Party in recent years, was reacting to footage circulating online showing Wiener, who is Jewish and gay, being jeered by some attendees at the annual LGBTQ+ event. Critics of the confrontation characterized it as antisemitic harassment directed at an elected official attending a community gathering, pointing to one agitator who told Wiener he had âstopped being Queerâ when he indicated support for Israel.
During a livestream, Piker argued that Wienerâs record on Israel and the Palestinians made such backlash predictable, and suggested the senator had attended the pride event to incite a negative reaction. âMaybe he wants these videos to exist,â Piker said, accusing Wiener of âfarming sympathy.â He added: âOf course this is gonna happen, what are u thinking? This is like if I went to a Klan rally, they would probably kill me.â
Piker continued, suggesting that politicians who have previously supported Israel should expect to face anger from activists, particularly within progressive spaces that have grown increasingly critical of Israelâs military campaign in Gaza. He also argued that reactions to the incident would be exploited by what he described as pro-Israel centrists.
âThis is catnip for the centrists who are very shy about revealing their position on Israel because itâs pro-Israel,â Piker said. âThey see this video and they go, âSee, you canât appease these monsters. Theyâll harass you endlessly.'â
He added: âI think the extent of your advocacy for Israel has to match your extent of advocacy for Palestine and Palestinians.â
The remarks sparked criticism from commentators who argued that Piker was effectively excusing hostile treatment of a public official based on his political views rather than condemning harassment. Supporters countered that he was simply describing the political reality of attending an event where many participants strongly oppose Israelâs policies.
Wiener, who is running for Congress, has made LGBT advocacy a central element of his political career and has spearheaded multiple initiatives to expand opportunities and reduce discrimination against the LGBT community in San Francisco. He faced criticism after initially declining to accuse Israel of committing genocide in Gaza. After reported backlash from LGBT activists and members of his own campaign staff, Wiener posted a video in which he accused Israel of committing what he described as âgenocideâ in Gaza, citing Israeli strikes on hospitals and schools as evidence.
Piker has made attacking Israel a central feature of his commentary, frequently characterizing the country as âgenocidalâ and drawing comparisons with Nazi Germany. He has claimed Israel âhas no right to existâ and has openly defended Hamas. He has also drawn condemnation for denying the documented Oct. 7 rapes of Israeli women and faced allegations of antisemitism after calling Orthodox Jews âinbred.â
Despite the controversy surrounding his commentary, Pikerâs profile has risen substantially in recent months. Prestige outlets including The New York Times and The New Yorker have published what critics described as uncritical profiles of the streamer, and several far-left, anti-Israel candidates he endorsed have won Democratic primaries, cementing his reputation as a kingmaker within the party.
The episode reflects the deepening tensions within progressive politics over the Israel-Hamas war, with disagreements over Israel increasingly spilling into LGBTQ+ advocacy spaces â and raising serious questions about the future of Israel supporters and Jews within left-wing organizations and the Democratic Party.
âOf course this is gonna happen, what are u thinking? This is like if I went to a Klan rallyâ huh. interesting choice of words.
the business which very publicly posted this in response to himâŚbuying a cup of coffee:
nobody should have been sending them death threats, but itâs also unfair to ask a Jewish man to accept discriminatory harassment by turning the other cheek. he had every right to speak about this.
every time I see JFREJ mentioned, I am forced to remember this from September 2023 (tw: CSA).
"City of Hersbruck. This lovely city of Hersbruck, this glorious spot of earth, was created only for Germans and not for Jews. Jews are therefore not welcome."
"Jews are not welcomed here."
"Forbidden to Jews."
The Nazi German government used laws to persecute Jewish people in Germany and German-occupied Europe. Anti-Jewish legislation (also called
one thing that kind of gives the game away wrt far right attitudes against birthright citizenship is that it's the very fact that "old world" countries like france for example don't have birthright citizenship that leads to second and third generation immigrants there becoming more radicalized and like joining ISIS or committing terrorist attacks or something and ofc you will never have any american right winger acknowledge this
what i mean here is that without birthright citizenship, you would probably not lessen immigration but instead automatically create an underclass of people who live in the country who are stateless which, if you claim to care about âsafetyâ and âpublic orderâ, would be a disaster bc youâd immediately have a new class of people ripe for radicalization.
not that this isn't obvious, but this was a desperate and frankly very stupid attempt to decrease and ultimately prevent the immigration of non-white people, which was not only a disgusting thing to attempt but also a total logical impossibility. no matter how much matt walsh shits his diaper about it, there have always been nonwhite people in the united states and there always will be.
The marchâs organizers criticized the state senatorâs âchoices throughout his political career.â
This is a pathetic response and an incredibly telling one.
This is just another place and group that has no problem reaping the benefits of the hard work Jews do, but every problem with the Jew itself.
We are allowed to exist in a limited way and so as we are useful. Once that is done we may not.
Once we have been wrung dry we are discarded.
I think about Harvey Milk ×˘×´× and I truly believe that if he were alive he would get the exact same treatment. Because all that matters is that he is a Jew.
Really? Gee, I think what's disgusting is the fact that my trans ass almost managed to take my trans nine-year-old to his first in-person trans community event, and LUCKILY we didn't make it.
I think it's disgusting that if we HAD made it, his first experience of his community would have been witnessing someone being chased out of the rally by people screaming, "WE FUCKING HATE YOU! WE FUCKING HATE YOU! YOU DON'T BELONG HERE! WE FUCKING HATE YOU!"
Or maybe you haven't actually seen the video, and you're just talking out of your ass based on what you've heard secondhand online? Like everyone who pretends to know or care about Palestine does?
I think maybe, JUST FUCKIFNG MAYUBE, this is A GODDAMN HORRIFYING WAY TO TREAT ANYBODY AT A PRIDE EVENT.
But GODDAMN, imagine being one of the little kids there and hearing all that. Imagine knowing that your presence at a "safe" Pride event is conditional.
Not on you being queer or trans. Not on your behavior there.
Just on whether other people THINK they know what YOU think, and whether what they THINK you think is Bad and therefore makes you a Bad Person.
SF Trans March didn't fucking kick him out. Scott Wiener has attended every single Trans March. He's created absolutely groundbreaking trans legislation for years. He's literally the only politician who consistently stands up for us.
If you want to be ~antizionist~ about it: both Connie Chan and Scott Wiener have pledged not to take money from AIPAC.
If Scott Wiener had accepted donations from an AIPAC-funded group, you would all be losing your shit over it.
But none of you have the least idea that Connie Chan has done exactly that. Nor, I suspect, do any of you care.
Because you do not hold other politicians up to the same standards you're holding Scott Wiener to.
It literally wouldn't matter if Scott Wiener was the one who had taken those donations. It wouldn't matter if Scott Wiener sucked elephant dick. It's none of your business at a Pride event.
Pride is supposed to be the ONE PLACE that we don't have to be hypervigilant about how other people are going to treat us.
This community is a toxic fucking mess. I'm so goddamn angry. My kid deserves one million times better than this.
Community leaders transformed a Jewish center into a shelter within 90 minutes of the quake. Now they must rebuild while already in tough fi
Less than two hours after two powerful earthquakes left hundreds dead and thousands missing in northern Venezuela, including its capital city of Caracas, families whose homes had been rendered unlivable began to make their way to Hebraica, the Jewish community center in Caracas, where they spent the night sleeping on beach chairs and in cars parked on the centerâs football field.
That night, more than 400 people sought refuge.
âBased on all the years of hardships weâve had â massive power outages and other problems â the community already knows where they can go if something happens,â said Roberto Mishkin, president of the Union Israelita de Caracas, the countryâs largest Ashkenazi Jewish congregation, adding that aftershocks are still rattling the area.
âA lot of people donât want to return because they live on high floors. Theyâre scared.â
The sprawling campus of Hebraicaâ built decades ago when Venezuelaâs Jewish population numbered around 30,000 â has become an emergency shelter, complete with mattresses, medical care, communal meals and preparations for Shabbat.
According to community leaders, two members of Venezuelaâs Jewish community have been confirmed dead, and several others remain missing. Hundreds more are displaced â their houses destroyed or severely damaged.
âPeople are worried, very worried, very anguished, and a lot of people donât know if they can go back to their homes,â said Elias Farache, the former president of the Sephardic community in Venezuela and a former leader of the Venezuelan Zionist Federation.
âItâs the club, so people feel very comfortable in this place,â he added, explaining that the tight-knit community has found comfort in gathering together.
Mishkin says Venezuelaâs Jews have been in dire straits for years. Before the earthquake, more than 300 Jewish families received food and medicine through local Jewish organizations such as Keren Ezra, which receives support from international partners, including the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, commonly known as the Joint.
For fleeing Jews, Venezuela was a golden land. Now in exile, they watch their homelandâs unrest with trepidation.
Under normal circumstances, Keren Ezra distributes staples such as raw chicken, rice and other groceries. Now, many families no longer have kitchens, so Keren Ezra has been distributing tuna, rice, crackers, cookies, coffee and other emergency supplies to people seeking shelter at Hebraica. Hundreds of displaced people are relying on the organizationâs reserves.
âWeâre trying to manage the problems as they come, because to be hysterical doesnât help,â said Syma Farache, a Caracas-based community member and the director of Keren Ezra. âWe do have products in stock for emergencies. We buy them four months in advance, but now we realize itâs not enough because we didnât expect this.â
Several Israeli and international Jewish organizations are working to send aid and rescue teams to Venezuela. Because Israel does not maintain an embassy or consulate in the country (former President Hugo ChĂĄvez severed diplomatic ties with Israel in 2009), Jewish community leaders are also coordinating with Venezuelan authorities to facilitate the arrival of these personnel. The first of these organizations began arriving on Friday, with the Jewish humanitarian organization CADENA reaching Venezuela, and an Israeli rescue team expected to arrive on Sunday. Others, including IsraAID and the Joint, remain on standby until Caracasâ airport reopens.
Farache said while there is no shortage of supplies yet, there could be if the airport does not open soon.
For now, community leaders are trying desperately to maintain a sense of normalcy. On Friday, they purchased mattresses so evacuees would no longer have to sleep in their cars or on beach chairs. A rabbi plans to spend Shabbat at the community center, while volunteers prepare cholent, the traditional Shabbat stew, to feed the displaced. Early next week, organizers hope to open a communal kitchen for those who cannot afford to purchase meals.
But addressing the immediate aftermath is only the beginning. Hundreds of displaced people will need housing
âNow everybody here is safe,â Mishkin said. âWeâre feeding a few families, and weâre trying to make do, but this is a very poor community.â
He recalled that Venezuelaâs Jewish community was once among Latin Americaâs most prosperous. The community has declined sharply over the past two decades, from its 30,000 peak, as part of a broader exodus that saw 7 million people leave the country due to political, economic and social challenges, including rising antisemitism.
The economy has seen a slight upturn since U.S. forces removed Venezuelan leader NicolĂĄs Maduro in January, but day-to-day life for most residents remains a struggle. Community institutions have continued to serve members and adapt to the new reality, all while struggling to raise money for social services.
âWe used to be a donor community. We sent money all over the world,â Mishkin said. âAfter 25 years of a complicated country, we have an elderly and not economically prosperous community. Most of the people whose houses are severely damaged are not going to be able to afford to fix them.â
Without property insurance, many families will have few options. Many also lost their businesses.
âThey cannot stay on a mattress forever,â Mishkin said. âThey cannot afford, on their own, the repairs or a new place to live. Thatâs our main concernâhow to help these families have a decent place to live.â
The woman who orchestrated the torture and murder of Sam Nordquist, a Black trans man, just plead guilty. Though itâs nothing even CLOSE to justice for what happened to him, at least. Thereâs something.
The woman prosecutors have described as the ringleader in the torture and killing of transgender man Sam Nordquist pleaded guilty Friday to
Precious Arzuaga is expected to be sentenced Sept. 4 to life in prison without parole after admitting to charges including first-degree murder, kidnapping, aggravated sexual abuse, concealment of a human corpse, conspiracy, coercion and endangering the welfare of a child in connection with the death of Nordquist, a 24-year-old from Oakdale, Minnesota. [...]
Arzuaga is one of seven people charged in the case. She admitted to being the one to conceal Nordquist's body after his killing, prosecutors said. [...]
Kayla [Sam's sister] said she does not believe all the details of Samâs abuse were revealed in court.
"I feel like I was slapped in the face because I deserve the truth, my mom deserves the truth, the community deserves the truth, and I don't feel like we got all of what happened to Sam today," she said.
Unfortunately the Air BNB they rented is charging them for a full month even though it is no longer needed for the trial of Precious Arzuaga. They will also need to attend the trials of the 5 other defendants and later the sentencings.
Please share, and if you are able please consider donating to help the family with legal fees and living & travel expenses.

if your main position is "i don't know how you people can support harm reduction. as for me, i'm for harm abolition. no i don't have a plan. no actually i mostly just bitch at people advocating for harm reduction as a way of making myself look pure" your opinions on political strategy are irrelevant and you yourself are beneath contempt you need to examine your beliefs, your need to feel righteous, your actual impact on the world, and how you can go about making an impact that aligns with your beliefs.
If you really believe harm is bad, and eliminating harm is a worthy goal, you have to start with small steps: eliminate a small harm, not all harms all at once. Reduce a great harm a little, perhaps by helping one individual impacted by that harm, and then another individual, and another... You cannot tackle all harm at once; you must take smaller bites. Set this reality against your need to feel right & correct & pure & perfect. Reducing some harm instead of all harm is not failure! You are not a failure! You may fail now and again, but failing once or twice or ten thousand times doesn't change the fact that you can still try again and succeed! You are not a failure even when you fail to reach your impossible goal of perfection.
You may not be able to complete the work of eliminating harm. But you can do your part to work toward that goal, reducing harm where you can. Your work layered with all the work of everyone who came before you, everyone who works beside you, and everyone who picks up the work when you set it down--all this work layered into making things besmal--that's a goal both possible and worth fighting for.
I'm sure someone else has already posted this elsewhere, but Robert Caro put it extremely well in The Power Broker:
"[Al Smith] had no patience for reformers who didnât understand the importance of practical politics in getting things done, who refused to compromise, who insisted on having the bill as it was written, who raged loudly at injustice who fought single-mindedly for an unattainable ideal. Their pigheadedness had the effect of dragging to political destruction politicians to listened to them, of ruining careers men had taken years to build. He had seen it happen. And more important, what was the inevitable result of their efforts?
Since they refused to compromise and operate within the political framework - the only framework with which their proposals could become reality - the laws they proposed were never enacted, and therefore at the end of their effort the people they wanted to help, the people who he knew so well needed help, hadnât been helped at all. If anything, they had been hurt; the stirring up of hard feelings and bitterness delayed less dramatic but still useful reforms that might have been enacted. When the reformers were finished with all their hollering and were back in their comfortable homes, the widows of the Fourth Ward would still be forced to give up their children before they could get charity. What good was courage if its only effect was to hurt those you were trying to help? "
So I was scrolling and saw this image in an article about the European heat wave,
And was like, uh, are you missing something there, buddy? Like all that red in northern Africa? Because that's a lot of red.
And I was going to give them the benefit of doubt, since I don't know much about the climate in Northern Africa, aside from Morroco and Egypt, which seem like really hot places, so you know, maybe it's normal there?
But nope, that's not the case:
Africa is struggling with heat waves and many countries on the continent lack the resources rich economies have to deal with rising temperat
Some selections from the article:
"The region has been experiencing some of the most intense heat waves in recent years, but in many cases theyâve been under-reported due to misconceptions about Africansâ ability to withstand them.
âAfrica is seen as a sunny and hot continent,â said Amadou Thierno Gaye, a research scientist and professor at Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar, the capital of Senegal. âPeople think we are used to heat, but we are having high temperatures for a longer duration. Nobody is used to this.â
"The Sahel, for instance, has been heating at a faster pace than the global average despite being hot already. Burkina Faso and Mali, both in West Africaâs Sahel, are among countries that are set to become almost uninhabitable by 2080, if the world continues on its current trajectory, a UK university study found. Its people are especially vulnerable due to shrinking resources, such as water, and poor amenities, and a dearth of trees and parks means there are few options for places to cool off."
sorry yeah i donât really want to hear about how people âtalk about the holocaust too muchâ and that holocaust education has no purpose because thereâs more important things to talk about and the holocaust needs to learn to share.
i made an innocuous comment on a facebook post a history creator i follow posted about the response to a holocaust related video he made. and. in 24ish hours the post got blown up by nazis.
nazis who are now responding to my comment en masse *and* scrolling through my facebook to comment gas chamber and other antisemitic memes any of my posts that happen to be public. and not that it even fucking matters but iâm not even jewish! they have no reason to think iâm converting and keep calling me that âgood goyâ bullshit, i have the privilege of not getting even worse ire here. but i want to rip my fucking hair out like no actually every single person thatâs had the audacity to act like antisemitism isnât an issue rn and that anyone who suggests it is is a blood sucking snake with ulterior motives can go fuck themselves. YOU enabled this behavior on social media by letting it run rampant and telling rabid antisemites it was okayyyy because you understoodddsd what âmade them like thatâ. for.
