This is one of my most favorite Andalusian muwashahat (an Arabic poem that’s specifically written to be sung). It was written in the 3rd century by an Arab poet from Granada, so it’s not very far fetched that the song has been sung at some point in that very palace centuries ago.

These are the lyrics in Arabic and English, in case anyone’s interested.

If the system ain't broke, don't fix it, I guess! Accounting may not be the oldest profession, but someone had to keep the books for them.

I mean, in theory I know that Excel is based on the structure of earlier accounting technology that's been around for hundreds of years -- what do we think we did to track commerce before computers? -- but it still kind of blows my mind to, for example, look at my ancestor's journal from a whaling voyage in 1770 and see spreadsheets in the back.

According to the book I'm reading, proto-Cuneiform writing seems to have actually started as spreadsheets to keep track of resources rather than as a way to record language or express ideas.

The administrators of that extremely early city had to keep track of lots of things, and doing this by memory alone was a nightmare. These spreadsheets were devised as a solution to that as an evolution of an earlier system that used clay tokens and balls.

Spreadsheets are older than written language as we currently understand it.

This makes perfect sense.

Societies had oral storytelling traditions that had functioned without writing for millennia. They didn't need to write stories down, they had a very good system in place.

Then with semi-settled existence and early agriculture in came the need to administrate more resources than you carry. Inventories are much harder to remember than stories, and change more often. Writing them down makes much more sense.

It's worth noting that this is 3000-ish BC. The ACTUAL first writing is tens of thousands of years old and largely consists of simple sets of lines. Some were probably used for basic calculation and a notable amount have 28 days, these were likely period-tracking calendars.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but there are definitely gender clinics out there that don't. "We decide who is trans so we will call you by your assigned-at-birth name and pronouns until we have diagnosed you to be trans" used the be the norm.

So I want to get a load of those "A trans person peed here and nobody was hurt" stickers, not merely for the punk activist reason of sticking them in places where I peed, but also so I can stick them in baffling, unreachable places.

Top of the Forth Bridge? There. Inchmickery, an island that does not have a regular ferry service? There. The ceiling of some very very tall building? There! I want you people to see the sticker and go "why did she pee there" and then "How did she pee there".

So I saw a photo of this hexagon tile floor . . .

The blurb said the shot was taken in Granada, Spain, by Agneta Fondén. No other info, so I have no idea how old, etc. There's a game (from 1988) that uses a similar pattern on one of its pieces, but this could predate it by at least a thousand years — or not. But the pattern intrigued me, so I made a texture map and used Blender's geometry nodes (no generative AI) to set up a hexagon grid with random rotations for the tiles:

That's all done with a single design:

You'd think this would have a name, right? (For its historical use as an architectural / decor tile — although I've found out more about its use in games, that's not what I'm looking for.) Like the Penroses do (and no, it's not one of those). But I've had no luck finding it, or any other info. Any (human only, please) help?
