The KIDS Act, ostensibly aimed at protecting children, will raise the risk for journalists, dissidents, and whistleblowers.
"Democrats and Republicans in Congress have struck a deal on a bill they say will help keep children and teens safe online. The KIDS Act could pass on the House floor as soon as next week; if enacted, it would fundamentally change the way everyone — not just kids — accesses the internet.
At stake is your ability to use many social media platforms without revealing your identity.
That’s because the KIDS Act at least strongly incentivizes — and, for some services, outright requires — age verification. Many platforms will turn to age verification to avoid potential liability under the law. Companies like X, video-sharing services like Vimeo, and others with a history of users’ populating social feeds with edgy content may be required to verify users’ ages because they host a certain amount of content deemed “sexual material harmful to minors,” a term that the KIDS Act defines broadly.
That’s a big problem for people who need to be able to use the internet anonymously, since, as Taylor Lorenz has previously written about in The Intercept, “there’s no way to reliably verify someone’s age without verifying who they are.”
Threats to online anonymity harm everyone, but one group is often overlooked: journalists and the sources who talk to them. Age verification requirements will help the Trump administration carry out its vendetta against the press by creating new avenues to identify journalists’ confidential sources. [...]
Mandating age verification effectively hands Big Tech and the government a skeleton key to the identities of every whistleblower, dissident, and investigative reporter who uses online platforms, not to mention everyone else, including children. This kind of surveillance on steroids that surrenders our right to speak, report, and read the news anonymously won’t make anyone safer."

Which reminds me of another German soldier's story: During D-Day, he was sent to spy on the American landing force, to see how many horses and veterinarians they had, to determine their logistical capabilities. Only to discover that the Americans had no horses or veterinarians; their entire army was mechanized. And that's when this particular soldier realized that Germany didn't have a chance.
There's a story of a German guard for a POW camp who knew that the war was lost whenever a POW's family sent him a whole cake with frosting to him.
I heard an apocryphal story of a Japanese general who realized they were screwed screwed when he learned the americans had a ship just to make ice cream.

Just to add in, there was more than one instance during the Battle of the Bulge where the German command on the ground, not in Berlin, rolled up on supply dumps that the US had abandoned for one reason or another and realized that there was no way they could win based on the fact that we'd left behind enough food and fuel for them to run of off for a week or more without a 2nd thought because we had 10 more of those setups near enough to make it no real loss for us.
Our industrial output could not be matched.
And then after it was all over the Berlin Airlift managed to eventually get stalin and the rest of the soviets to back off on trying to claim the whole city for themselves, because starving people out wasn't going to work, we'd managed to move more supplies into the city than should have been possible.

I clicked on the details buttons and it said as of today, we have 83 days left until Google rolls out this new requirement for apps inside and outside of the google play store. If any developer disagrees with their new terms and fees, they will be blocked!

In order to have access to any sort of thing dubbed mature, and We haveALL seen what they think is mature, Everything from a black and white photo of a black woman's arm, to posts about IUD recalls, to a nude painted by a 17th century artist, to anything involving the word Trans; you have to send your personal information to a third party site that WILL get hacked, and you will be doxxed. And they can say "Oh shit, well it wasn't us who sent your name address and gender identity to Moldovan teenagers, here's a couple extra minutes in the ball pit.
That's bad enough!!!!!!!! But the entire idea of needing permission from state authorities to access anything labeled mature by our friendly AI overlords is some fucking Boll shit. I had a friend who thought that so many of her guy friends liked her, and that they owed her a relationship, and when they broke up with her, or turned her down, she spread rumors about them, and she even outted one guy who was bi, because he wasn’t interested in her at the time.
Eradicate this idea that guys are the only ones who react badly after being turned down, that guys are the only ones who make girls uncomfortable, or that guys are the only ones who won’t respect boundaries.
Because a lot of girls feel so entitled that they think men owe them a relationship, and if that guy says no then they go out of their way to give him a living hell.
