I had a child so my game completion/ posts about completion aren't really a priority right now, but here's the last handful of games I've completed.
Completion 3 for 2024: Medarot - Imagineer A pretty interesting battle mechanic-based game. Definitely rough in the story department, but overall I enjoyed my time with this to round out the January GotM club. A lot of trial and error with parts but when you get all 3 tin-pets you get to experiment Its not perfect. And could use a bit more polish in presentation how how things work / how does snipe and shoot attacks choose a target, but its not terrible. Not everyone will like the fact that the bots are supposed to fight via their own "personality" and not take specific commands each turn to target specific people.
Completion 2 for 2024: Densetsu no Stafy - Tose A really interesting little platforming game. Main mechanic is swimming and spinning, which some neat momentum behind each. Has a bit too many mid-level cut scenes that interrupt the flow of play, but overall a very unique experience. Worth a play.
First completion of the year was Cave Noire for the Gameboy! Completed for #retrohandhelds GotM club. A really impressive piece of software for the time and console it was released on. Very re-playable, very fun and never got boring. Also very difficult at times. Interesting that you essentially only upgrade permanently at higher difficultly levels, and even then its a single HP increase and nothing else. (It seemed)
The Homebrew summer showcase was dope. The homebrew community is very much alive and making killer games.
Didn’t get all of them their own posts, but this was the final breakdown of games from last year
Completion No. 79 of 2022 Enduro - Activision It’s an outrun game with little beetles (I know its cars) Not much to say.
Completion No. 78 of 2022 Breath of Fire - Capcom The visuals and music are good. Like better than they should be for what this game is. Art and Sound popped off. Everything else is not so much. It’s very dated, the combat is uninteresting at best, and laborious and drawn-out artificially at worst. No bosses other than maybe the Pixelated one has any sort of real mechanic that makes it challenging. Most battles are Attack. Attack. heal. Attack. Attack. Heal. Skills and Magic is unremarkable, the transformations for the main protagonist arrives WAY to late to break up the monotony of single target encounters for a long time. None of the characters are really fleshed out or have genuinely engaging moments. I can kinda see how this would be someone’s favorite if it was the first Snes RPG that they ever played, but there are many other options with more engaging stories and combat over this one. Played it for the retrohandhelds GOTM and I believe this might be my least favorite of the ones I completed.
Completion No. 77 of 2022
Hagane - Hudson Soft
This game is so good. Great controls. Lots of options to use in combat and movement. Some of the levels are a bit tough, but with unlimited continues and only having to start at the beginning of a stage if you lose all your lives, this was one of the most enjoyable hack and slash games of this kind I’ve played so far. Love the variety of main weapons to use as well.
Completion No. 76 of 2022
Trombone Champ - Holy Wow
A silly rhythm game that ends up having way more content in terms of story mode than I would have expected. Make sure to S-Rank those songs to start yourself on the journey to becoming the true champ. That and eat at least 10 hot dogs.
Completion No. 75 of 2022
Chico and the Magic Orchards - @daikonsoftware
Very fun adventure puzzle game. Mechanics are solid. New one introduced in each level Boss fights are creative Love the palette swap options Graphics evoke a genuine GB/GBC feel!
Completion No. 74 of 2022
Luigi's Mansion - Nintendo
I really enjoyed this one. Really fun start to the series, sets up a great rivalry for Luigi! A really cool weird game for Nintendo to make and release before Sunshine. Played through this at the same time as the 3DS one.
Completion No. 73 of 2022
Luigi's Mansion 3DS - Nintendo
Fun game. Compared to GC has some nice QOL upgrades but the Cstick controls make it a chore to do any sort of combat. Preferred the Gamecube version over this one, even with the second screen
Completion No. 72 of 2022
The 7th Guest - Trilobyte
This game terrified me as a child. Finally went back and played through this with my wife. Interesting game. I hated the chess puzzles, but everything else was well designed.
Completion No. 71 of 2022
Echo Night - FromSoftware
Bad controls. I know it was early 3D days but....they are so BAD Great story for a suspense/horror game this early on. I had a lot of fun playing through this one for the GOTM for #retrohandhelds discord.
Completion No. 70 of 2022 Splatterhouse - Namco Way more fun than I thought it was gonna be. Always thought it was an edgy "play as a serial killer" and oops was completely wrong about that. Definitely worth a play if you've never tried it.
Completion No. 69 of 2022
Splatoon 3 - Nintendo
Really liked the 1 player mode in this one. Don't know about S2, but Splatoon 1's campaign was lacking. Really liked how this one flowed, the structure and the ending.
