i really don't care for the labels anymore. Call me whatever you want. I just want to be nice to people, and let people make art. Sometimes I fail at the being nice part, but it's never about the person I'm being rude to, the root cause is always some self destructive tendencies that I'm working on fixing.

I disagree now that the labels pro-ship and anti-ship are *just* about a person's feelings on, for lack of a better term, problematic ships. The labels carry so much more on their backs. The labels themselves are microfandoms within fandoms. To adopt one of those labels is to step into that respective community, and that community will have people and history and culture and associations and rules pre-packaged. It's hard to pick and choose what aspects of those communities you want to engage with or distance yourself from.

Here's a tip: if you don't like the vibes of that community, you can just leave. It doesn't mean you have to change your morals. Your morals do not have to box you in with a group you don't like.

I still have... friends, mostly acquaintances, in the pro-ship community. I still follow people in the pro-ship community. But I don't consider myself a part of it anymore. There's too much of the full package that I don't like, I couldn't put up with it, so I left, and I feel better now. I thought it was toxic.

Some people seem to think if you dont care about fiction you dont care about irl.

Well, i do care. Kids are most at risk from their families and trusted individuals. Not people on the internet. Out of abuse suffered its most likely going to be a relative or an authority figure.

Id much rather speak up irl about predatory behavior or question why a grown man is leering at teens or why some cousins 'have to cover more' when certain uncles show up.

People seem to only care about shipping, or people liking characters. If nobody knew anybodys age, would it even matter online? This is also american centric, seeing as how its always 18 hard set as an adult. Alright, I need to have a chat with the teenagers that follow me, specifically regarding lying about your age and nsfw content. This isn’t directed at anyone, but I think it’s a convo that needs to be had in general.

I was a teenager once. I get it. Everyone lies about their age online. Maybe not to other people, but I’m sure every minor has clicked a ‘yeah, sure, I’m 18+” button at some point in their lives. I’m not here to shame you for that.

What I am here to say is it is vital that teenagers understand the difference between engaging in sexual content independently (ie, entering a fake birthday to access 18+ content), and lying about your age to engage in sexual activities with others online (joining discord servers/using nsfw channels intended for adults only/lying about your age to talk to nsfw content creators/commissioning nsfw art/etc).

Lying about your age to a website so you can look at porn is one thing. It’s an entirely independent experience, where the only consent that really matters is yours. Nobody has any power over you in this situation, and there’s about no chance of legal consequences.

However, lying about your age to other human beings is extremely different. If you’re engaging in nsfw roleplay with a friend about the same age as you, talking about sex with other teenagers, sharing nsfw fics among friends, that’s one thing. But do not lie about your age to engage in sexual activities/discussions. Not only is something that could have actual legal ramifications, and very serious ones depending on what’ going on, but it’s a violation of the other people’s consent. The moment other real people are involved, you need to be respectful of their boundaries & what is and isn’t appropriate for you to be engaging with. If they say no minors, I don’t care if you’re 17.5, you stay out until you are 18 years old.

Examples of situations where it is never okay to lie or mislead anyone about your age online include:

Joining/accessing nsfw channels or servers on discord.

Yes, I know it’s very easy to just click that little red button on discord that lets you access the channel you’re so curious about. It looks just like the one you see on adult websites that you click without thinking.

Don’t do it.

If channels are 18+ then you stay out of them. There are other real life human beings involved who did not give consent to have a minor in an adult orientated space.

Engaging with nsfw creators/content directly

ie, commissioning nsfw artwork, following or talking to nsfw creators who’ve asked for no interactions from minors/flagged their accounts as 18+ only, subscribing to nsfw creators on patron, nsfw roleplay, etc.

Joining/engaging with adult only communities, like Fetlife or cam sites.

Engaging in romantic and/or sexual online relationships

Any time you are talking with one or more other real human beings, particularly any adults, in a sexual context.

I know that adult websites have basically trained teenagers to just say they’re 18 and move on, but it is vital that teenagers understand that it is never okay to lie about your age when directly engaging in any kind of sexual activity. Knowing people’s age is a vital part of consent, and if an adult is found to have been engaging in sexual activity with a minor, they could face life long legal consequences. Not only that, but a basic facet of consent is clear, honest communication. If you are lying to a partner, then you do not have consent. Lying about your age is a huge violation of consent.

That’s not to say you can never mention sex around adults online. There are times and places where you may be asking for advice, or even just making jokes about sex or whatever. That’s all well and good, so long as everyone is on the same page. It’s on adults to make sure that we are behaving appropriately around minors online, and make sure that we’re setting boundaries in those relationships. But it’s on minors to communicate that they are minors, and respect those boundaries that are set.

So, tl;dr,

Lying about your age to access a porn site is fine. Lying about your age to engage in sexual situations/adult-only spaces where other real human beings are involved is not.

also, I know a lot of you are cool illegalist mfs who know that ethics are more important than what the law says, but in addition to the ethical issues already mentioned, there very much are also severe legal consequences for adults who unknowingly engage in sexual stuff with minors online. the burden of proof to show that you didn’t actually know the person was a minor is very high, and just the fact that the minor lied is often not enough to defend against a guilty verdict since most things are a crime whether or not you knew you were breaking the law.

if you lie to an adult about your age and then e.g. enter into a sexual relationship with them, send them nudes, etc, that person could be charged with statutory rape, sexual assault of a minor, possession of child pornography, child endangerment, sex trafficking if they helped you travel across state lines to come see them, or a whole host of other crimes federal and state governments have passed to crack down on child sexual abuse - the consent of a minor is meaningless in the eyes of the law, even if you’re a very mature 17.5 year old, and the federal age of majority is 18 regardless of what your state laws say. they could get serious jail time and be on the sex offender registry for life, and subsequently be subjected to job and housing discrimination (no one wants to rent to or hire a “child molester”).

the carceral state is CONSTANTLY trying to paint queers as pedophiles and sex deviants in order to exclude us from public life and I KNOW that directly means that lying about your age is probably much more common for queer kids because you want to know and learn about a community that is so often hidden behind NSFW filters out of a belief that it’s “adult,” but lying to OTHER QUEER PEOPLE and getting them in trouble makes it so so easy for the people who hate us to play up that narrative and get people killed over it.

What exactly does "proshippers dni" mean? /gen

I'm not doing a semantics thing and I won't "correct" anyone's answer, I genuinely just want to know what type of person most antis are referring to when they say "proship/proshippers dni".

Because at first, I thought it was just... anyone with any type of dark kink or ship, or who believes that fiction does affect reality but just not on a 1:1 scale, but I think I've been mistaken about what antis generally want to avoid.

So I wanna know, because I want to respect people's dnis and I want to understand antis more!

The antis I have spoken with have given me the impression that while they may disagree with milder proship stances, what they REALLY hate is stuff like "Fiction never has an impact on people in any way!" or "If you don't like my kinks, you're inherently sex-negative!" or "MAPs should be accepted and trusted uwu" or whatever other frankly awful and untrue things they might say.

And it's like, if an anti hates those things, but is okay with milder or neutral stances, I would like to know. Because unfortunately I've been led to believe that most antis would consider anything that's not aggressively anti-proship to be just fully proship, so I just completely stay away to avoid causing any discomfort or trouble.

Anyways, feel free to reblog or reply with your personal feedback, and please be nice to each other. ^^ I don't intend to try and convince anyone of anything in this post, I just want to understand people with different perspectives. :)

Usually it just means that they don’t want anyone who calls themselves a proshipper to reblog, like, send asks to them or message them and it can be due to a number of reasons. I’m neutral and very proship critical but when I did have “proshippers DNI” in my bio it was because I just left the community due to toxic stuff that I witnessed in it and just didn’t want to be associated with the community anymore. For me it’s mostly about labels. If I saw “proshipper” in your user or bio then I’d block you cause it’s one thing to agree with some values that could be considered “proship” (don’t harass, don’t send death threats, fiction affecting reality is more complex then some people think etc.) but it’s another to be active in the community.

I think I definitely understand that sort of thing. The three values you listed ("don't harass, don't send death threats, fiction affecting reality is more complex then some people think") are definitely ones that I hold and that proshippers kind of claim "ownership" of in a way, and I agree that you don't have to be active in the community or even like it at all (or use the label) to hold those values.

And it's fair to assume that someone labeling themself proship comes with more connotations than just those values, because each community or label kind of ends up with common... occurrences, I suppose. Some of which are toxic or uncomfortable. ><

I struggled a lot last year with feeling isolated in the fandom I was in because I had been blocked by many artists who had "proship dni" far before I had started embracing the term or even any taboo ships that I was aware of. I don't know if it was because they perceived me as a proshipper regardless of my labels, or if it was merely because of a ship or art I liked. From the beginning, I assumed their assessment of my stance was right because I had been pretty firmly pro-darkfic/kink/whatever for years, but I hadn't once called myself proship until people had already started blocking me and sometimes even accusing me of breaking their dni.

I remember feeling pushed into the proship community by that isolation, which lead to me becoming super intimate with the discourse-y side of it and all the blemishes that came with it.

But to avoid getting off topic: I guess even as I begin to re-assess my position in this discourse and open my mind to sympathizing with antis more than I was ever comfortable doing before, I still wonder if me having those core beliefs you listed or being willing to associate with proshippers or just... liking some pretty screwed up art tbh, would slot me under the same dni regardless and continue the cycle of isolation. Or would I cease to feel so isolated over it if I no longer considered myself proship, in a more active way than merely using no labels?

It's sort of difficult for me to come to terms with the idea of fully separating myself from that label because so, so many proshippers insist that me having those values still makes me proship, and because I have been given the impression that many, many antis would still see me as an enemy of sorts.

Sorry if this was bothersome! I'm not asking you or anyone else to answer my life ponderings for me haha. It just super helps me to think about this stuff aloud sometimes.

I did understand the feeling of “okay people look at me as a proshipper so I might as well be one.” I got into proshipping as a teen because I was into killing stalking at the time which…if you were there in 2018 then you knew that people basically thought you were satan himself if you liked that comic. Because of that, people labeled me as a proshipper and so I joined the community and they embraced me with open arms. It wasn’t until things™️ started happening that I realized that I could still enjoy and engage with dark fiction without associating with that group. I think people still do block me because they think I’m a proshipper even though I explicitly say that I’m not but I don’t let it get to me. If someone blocks me I just ignore it and move on. I don’t know them, they don’t know me. They have a right to block me cause they’re creating their own fandom/internet experience even if it is misunderstood and I’ve just accepted that. Just as long as they don’t come after me

It also doesn’t help that people in both proship and anti communities think that just because you’re neutral then you must be secretly be pro or anti ship which is a very narrow way of thinking and looking at what this discourse actually is which is just fandom drama that doesn’t have any real merit in real life.

Also I think it’s important to keep in mind that basic “proship values” like anti harassment and so on and so forth are that values of most people which is how people become proshippers and get “trapped” in that community because “if I’m not anti harassment or pro free speech then leaving the community means that I’m going against that”. Or atleast that was my line of thinking when I tried to leave at first.

If either side sees you as an enemy then what is there to lose, really? Media literacy and engagement isn’t split between proship and anti, it’s much more complex then that.Sorry if I’m coming off as preachy 😭

I see you when you call people stupid. I see you when you degrade people in ways that I dare not repeat. I see you when you say “kay why ess,” it’s not a joke to tell people that. I see you when you say very mean things. I see the comments where people are trying to create this poor gacha like “on Reddit” and “of course proshippers answered this as the majority.”

Reddit isn’t a valid argument, are the people there even trying to be decent human beings? The whole website is toxic. And that “majority” was like 30% and the other proship options outweighed it, making the true majority those who didn’t agree.

It’s draining. Bullies are draining. Just because you can’t see the consequences of your actions doesn’t mean there aren’t any.

I genuinely think so many of you just need to take a break from social media, at the very least, stop engaging in discourse. So many people I see don’t understand that the way they word themselves changes the way that people respond.

But so many times it’s, “I don’t care.” I’m sorry you don’t care that the way you talk to people will influence their perception of you, of the people you side with, and their mood as a whole.

Being mean to an adult isn’t better than being mean to a child. Why do you harbor so muh hate in your heart? Why are you so miserable that you desire to make others miserable too?

It hurts me so much to be near this discourse. The more I see it the worse I feel. So many people need to understand that the words they use, the words they speak holds an impact. Antis, I will never side with you. I won’t lean your way because you are the worst that I have seen. You love to mock, belittle and insult every chance you get. Does it really bring you joy to ask some stranger “are you stupid on accident or purpose?” Does it bring you joy to tell strangers to die?

I don’t always agree with proshippers either. To those who believe in the “don’t like don’t read” concept but fail to properly tag, does it really bring you joy to be so disrespectful? To those who believe that it is fine to fight fire with fire because antis are disrespectful so why should you be a human being, does it bring you joy to act like such a monster in return?

Why is it that so many people are so cruel? What do any of you gain from being sarcastic at someone undeserving of it? What do you gain by telling people to end their life or calling them mean names? It’s all a bunch of nonsense, all so pointless. Why would I believe antis are good people when I see miscellaneous people being told that they deserved to be raped by someone? To be groomed as a child? That’s cruel. And that lack of actual accountability I have seen from that side. I rarely see antis saying “that’s not okay.” Instead, I see them cheering on the bullies. I don’t see people saying “hey, that’s not exactly a good argument, that’s just mean.” Instead, you decide to dog pile, mass report and just harass people you disagree with.

Proshippers, you’re not better. I have to be mindful of what I repost because you are just as much of a keyboard warrior in people’s ask boxes, being disrespectful and rude. Telling them things that does nothing but make things worse.

And it’s so tiring. I may take a little hiatus from this account. It’s not like anyone truly wants to see any positive changes within fandom spaces. Keep it up, I’ll write my content and just not touch fandoms. I don’t care, you’re bound to be harassed regardless of which side you pick. I’ll hide away on my main blog and my mental health one.
