The claim for reparations was originally part of a broader lawsuit filed in 2012 by the Tk'emlups te’ Secwepemc and shíshálh Nation in B.C. — along with residential school survivors known as day scholars — who were forced to attend Kamloops Indian Residential School and Sechelt Indian Residential School.
Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc announced last Thursday that preliminary findings from a survey of the grounds at the former Kamloops institution uncovered an unmarked burial site with the remains of children.
So far, 105 First Nations have signed onto the lawsuit.

The federal government, in court filings, denies any legal responsibility.
It says the loss of language and culture was an “unavoidable implication” of “children being educated in English or taught the Christian doctrine,” according to Ottawa’s amended statement of defence, filed in 2019.
It admits the schools were meant to “assimilate” Indigenous people, but denies the federal governments of that era “sought to destroy the ability … to speak their Indigenous language or to lose the customs or traditions of their culture.”
Those languages and cultures were also eroded by “historical, personal and society circumstances” and by interactions between “Indigenous communities and the dominant culture,” along with urbanization, the federal government argued.
“While the federal government may have contributed to those losses in various ways, such losses were not as a result of any unlawful acts or omissions of Canada or its employees or agents with respect to the operation of residential schools.”
The loss of language and culture was an “unavoidable implication”? Are you fucking kidding me? The schools were quite literally created and described as designed to “remove the indian from the child”. This was not some tragic accident. It was but one tool in a systemic genocide that continues to this fucking day.
Prediction: he’ll walk, because accidentally killing somebody in South Dakota is a misdemeanor. His criminal trial will end with (as the article says) the largest wrist slap available to the jury.
But then, the civil trial begins and the family of the dead man sues this incredible asshole into a glowing white hot crater of debt so severe his life is ruined. I mean, the evidence we already know is damning.
Jason Ravnsborg, State Attorney General for South Dakota, the ‘top cop’ in all the state... killed a pedestrian in a late night hit & run accident. Instead of stopping to render aid, he drove home and hid his car.
The next day he drove back to the scene of the accident and ‘discovered’ the body of the man he’d killed laying in a ditch. He then called 911.
His explanation: he said he thought he’d hit a deer.
Okay, so even if that were true, most people would stop anyway. You know, to check the vehicle for damage? Find the dead deer? But anyway.
Then last week the official accident investigation report was released, revealing such gems as:
- at the time of the accident, cell tower records show Ravnsborg was scrolling a white supremacist website on his phone so clearly not paying attention to the fucking road;
- the dead man’s eyeglasses were found inside Ravnsborg’s car, implying his FACE HAD COME THRU THE WINDSHIELD WHAT THE FUUUUUU
And of course, faced with such incriminating evidence Ravnsborg pleaded guilty, resigned, and threw himself--
Nah, just kidding.
He got a friendly judge to issue a gag order so that any future reports about the incident are suppressed. Because, y’know, he’s STILL the Attorney General and theoretically all the SD DOJ judges work for him.
So regardless of what the courts do or don’t do to him? He’s going to Hell.
the body positivity movement needs to start moving hard into including disabled bodies and this is what I mean by that. yes, it was a good step forward to change the rhetoric from “your body is a good body if it meets these arbitrary aesthetic standards” to “your body is a good body because it completes these tasks for you” (ie: walking, eating, laughing, hugging, etc.) but that rhetoric is still not fully body positive, because it excludes bodies that do not do these things. the same as saying how we need to “focus on healthy bodies not skinny bodies” sounds good at first, but it completely misses the point that unhealthy bodies deserve to be appreciated too. disabled bodies are still beautiful and still fundamentally good, not because “your body is kind to you so you should be kind to your body”- because not everyone’s body is kind to them. but all bodies are still good bodies because they are what houses your soul. your body is what allows you to exist and live your life in whatever way you live it, and for that reason, it is a good and beautiful body. your body is what your loved ones see when they look at you and the love they feel for it as an extension of you makes it a good and beautiful body. your body doesn’t have to look a certain way or behave a certain way to be good. it is good just for being here.

Honestly the whole system is doomed to fail there is nothing u can say or do that will prevent humans from looking inside a locked box. Even w people knowing what is inside nuclear containment areas people today would still go inside to look if we werent here actively preventing them. Pandoras box is not a moral tale its just a description of what humanity is like. The only way to stop people from going somewhere u dont want them to is to make it physically impossible for them to get there and thats a lost cause if youre working on a scale of 10s of thousands of years.

it currently has less than half the signatures it needs to for the government to respond, and though the deadline to get them is in october, i don't know if we can leave things to chance.

villains are hard to design. making them ugly is dangerous, depending on what traits you choose to frame as monstrous or undesirable, you could very well end up saying something fatphobic, racist, anti-semitic, etc
