the sun after a storm
Rating: E
Summary: After years of pining and wanting, Ashur and Tarquin finally do something about it. It turns out to be rather a lot.
i recently finished disco elysium and was compelled to put tarquin in kim's jacket. followed shortly by giving ashur snakeskin shoes. which ballooned into a crossover nobody asked for
ashur shares nothing in common with harry, but i find identity crisis (viper, divine, ashur) and memory loss very compelling in a mystery. also tarquin with gun. 👀
I was tagged by @trisshawkeye so here we gooo. They're all Dragon Age, to no-one's surprise.
Rules: post the first sentence opening of your most recent 10 fanfics and tag up to 10 people.
(I have not written 10 fanfics lately, so I'm including a couple of unpublished WIPs as well.)
Also here are some art previews, because three of them are illustrated!
ekleipsis, illustrated by @lola1b
Remember the Fire, illustrated by @lola1b
like fire that did not burn, illustrated by @demarogue
ekleipsis (written with @breitweisergallery, illustrated by @lola1b)
June did not so much see the dawn as hear it. Their forge was sealed against all external influence - breeze, temperature change, errant wisps - but beyond encasing the entire space in an impenetrable seal of magic, there was nothing they could do to completely nullify the simple effect of the sun.
Dragon Age Big Bang 2026, written with my discord spouse took and illustrated by our beloved artist Lola, this was a very ambitious piece about the lead-up to the murder of Mythal. You know what fucks with ambition? Burnout. took wound up having to do the majority of the work, but insisted I got credit anyhow. This chapter, at least, I wrote, so whilst it's not the first line, it's my first line.
Fun fact: ekleipsis is the title because Elgar'nan uses an eclipse to boost his power, AND the Greek word 'ekleipsis' literally translates to 'downfall'. Which seemed perfect.
A Mystery and a Dream
In the year 9.37 Dragon, the Chantry in the Hightown of Kirkwall was destroyed in a vast magical explosion, sparked by the apostate known as Anders. Of course, it wasn’t all his own work; it made use of the fragile Veil and the intricate sigils throughout the city’s layout, both relics of the Tevinter magisters of old. Kirkwall had always been created to be the site of a massive feat of magic to change the world - it had just fallen dormant.
Also written in the midst of burnout as part of the Arlathan Exchange, this was a brief fic about Solas waking up and meeting a young Kieran in the Fade. It's one I would love to come back to when my brain is no longer broken down in a ditch.
Fun fact: the title comes from the poem 'Imitation' by Edgar Allen Poe, also about dreams. It opens with the lines 'A dark unfathom'd tide/ of interminable Pride', which, again, seemed extremely fitting.
To Catch a Wolf
The man’s name, they said, was Solas. To Ameridan’s growing dismay, they seemed to know very little else of him - and worse, were comfortable with this fact.
Written for the Pride's Solace exchange (you are probably detecting a theme at this point), this was an AU where Ameridan (my beloved) was part of the Inquisition and knew Solas's true identity due to having been friends with Felassan back in the day. Didn't even manage to make them have angry sex, that's how burned out I was when writing.
Fun fact: the Inquisitor in this story, Maara Adaar, is the creation of @teammomjeans <3
Let the love tear us apart
Hey Chief!
I’m not dead! Or arrested. Or any of the other things you were fretting about, so, you owe me a drink. Or five. I’ll catch up with you all soon, so don’t go running off anywhere. Just knew you’d be fretting unless I wrote to you first.
I love this fic very much. Written for Trans Thedas fest, it has the framing device of Krem writing back to the Iron Bull to let him know how rescuing his Dad back in Tevinter went.
Fun fact: somehow was the first Krem/Tarquin fic on AO3?? Seriously??
Remember the Fire (illustrated by @lola1b)
It was the middle of the day, but the sun was hidden by thick cloud. Rain had been pouring in a steady torrent since morning, and Ameridan had given up trying to get anywhere, and instead found a thick canopied tree to shelter under from the worst of it.
It's my beloved blorbo Ameridan again. Written for the Dragon Age Big Bang 2025, this was another highly ambitious piece about the Divine Age, the founding of the Chantry, the beginning of the Second Blight, and the rise and fall of the first Inquisition, all the while Ameridan and Drakon have something very toxic going on. Most importantly, it was my first introduction to and collaboration with Lola <3
Fun fact: I spent so so long piecing together codex entries and timelines for this one. I approached it with the rigor of a Classical scholar (because I was one), comparing conflicting sources and deciding which was more reliable. I became that alwayssunny.gif of the guy waving his arms in front of a conspiracy board.
WHY DID THE BATTLE OF CUMBERLAND TAKE PLACE WHERE IT DID? IT MAKES NO SENSE?
like fire that did not burn (illustrated by @demarogue)
‘The first of the Maker's children watched across the Veil
And grew jealous of the life they could not feel, could not touch.
In blackest envy were the demons born.’
Hessarian, if you were as erudite as this Canticle would like to have people believe, you would not have succumbed to the charms of some Southern barbarian and her sad sad eyes. Pathetic, honestly.
Another fic that sent me diving deep into the codices of this game, my take on how Spite was formed and bonded with Lucanis in the Ossuary. It's well-trodden ground in the fandom, but I got some lovely comments about how this seemed like an original and fresh take on the concept. Also Dema's art is incredible and beautiful. It came from the art, rather than vice versa, and I feel like the art is the star of the show here.
Fun fact: a lot of this was created with the assistance of @jeriais, who I do a lot of RP with, and is a very good human <3
Upon Corvid Wings (written with @midnightprelude)
Smoke filled the Minrathous air for weeks after Elgar’nan’s fall, even with the steady drizzle that seemed to perpetually surround the city. Most of the blight boils that had enveloped the capitol had receded after the death of the last Evanuris, but the tendrils and its residue still needed to be burned away.
This was written with Middy for the Dragon Age Create-a-thon! A fluff gift for dalish_rogue, it's a brief visit with their OC Faye Mercar and Lucanis in the aftermath of the final battle.
Fun fact: I was trying to do CAT at the same time as writing both the fics above. It was a mistake. I have learned my lesson.
I Can't Help but Wonder (written with @breitweisergallery)
Varric was awake, when Kieran fled to the infirmary with a bottle of Antivan red in one hand. He was always awake when he needed to talk to him. The dwarf took one look at the bottle in his hand and the expression on his face and sat up. “What’s happened?”
Another Create-a-Thon piece, this time with discord spouse took once again, about Kieran-as-Rook being reunited with his father, Vaere Surana Hero of Ferelden, in Hossberg. It's cute, it's sweet, it has Kieran/Davrin hints which I didn't foresee, and a significant chunk is inspired by the time I tried to take out the Disciple-in-Ichor mini-boss when underlevelled and wielding necrotic magic. Oops.
Fun fact: I met took on a Dragon Age RP server where he played Vaere Surana and I came in asking if I could play Kieran. And so a beautiful relationship based on mutual trauma-giving began.
Bonus, WIP: The Ossuary (written with @jeriais)
The sea was calm as Lucanis made his way from the galley to the cabin he shared with Viago, a tray balanced on one hand. The moons and stars were hidden by clouds, but phosphorescent plankton glowed around the boat and gave enough light for him to step easily by.
Jer and I have over 50k of a Lucanis/Viago AU where Viago was locked in the Ossuary along with Lucanis. We just need to finish the fucking thing (see: burnout, brain broken down in a ditch).
Fun fact: I keep mentioning phosphorescent plankton in my fics because I saw it whilst sailing on a boat once and am forever haunted, in a good way, by how amazing and weird it looked.
Bonus, WIP: Heir of Beauty
He was woken from empty dreams by his Mamae shaking his shoulder, hard.
“Wake up, Kieran. ‘Tis time for us to be away.”
He didn’t stop to question, to argue. He’d done this before. He just rolled out of bed and grabbed his bag where it hung off the end, and started filling it up with his belongings around the room.
My latest big ambitious project, a fic about Kieran, Urthemiel, June, and the Architect, bringing together lots of my little fascinations into one story, all the while Kieran is Rook and trying to resolve the main plot of Veilguard too. It's the first thing I've been able to write as I've begun to pull myself out of the burnout ditch, and I'm quietly hopeful about it.
Fun fact: Research for this fic cemented my headcanon that Andraste had the Old God soul of Dumat, just as Kieran had the soul of Urthemiel. So that's going to play a role too.
Tagging to take part in this: @breitweisergallery, @midnightprelude, @oftachancer, @jeriais, @stormsbreadth, @teammomjeans, and anyone else who is so inclined!
tagged by the wonderful @breitweisergallery so now I can't ignore it of course. thank you for the kind words, my friend. I'm happy our talks spark some ideas for you as well!
Rules: post the first sentence opening of your most recent 10 fanfics and tag up to 10 people.
I too will include the artwork for the fics that have it!👏
The vast majority of these are Dragon Age & Tashur sorry not sorry.
Aegis | Ashur/Tarquin longfic for the Dragon Age Big Bang
If only Tarquin had an easier time disappointing Ashur, then maybe he wouldn’t have signed himself up for this shit.
He’s getting too damn old for this sort of thing. Truthfully, he thought he’d left his competitive streak far behind him when he was discharged from the military—but clearly he hadn’t.
The thing is. The thing is, it’s not as though Tarquin has got a death wish. He doesn’t, thank you very much.
He doesn’t.
Sure, he puts himself in danger to ensure the safety of others on a regular basis. It’s a noble cause, after all, fighting for the Shadow Dragons, for Minrathous. For freedom. But that’s not like this. He’d never voluntarily sign up for more danger. Not in a million years. Not if the Fade tore open.
Or so he thought.
Featuring this fantastic art for Aegis made by the wonderful @keriweird! One of the four (!!) amazing pieces they made for the fic.
Double Trouble | Ashur/Tarquin oneshot for @lemoncakedesign
opening is NSFW, lol, sorry.
It’s been a very strange week for Tarquin. Mostly because for the second time within the span of seven days, he’s on his knees with someone’s cock down his throat.
And it’s not even the same fucking man. That’s a fact that would probably make his Ma have an aneurysm if she were to ever find out, pious Andrastian as she is. It’d leave her gaping like the heaps of fish Pa’s nets pull in on a good day.
But his mother’s not here. He’s not so much as talked to her in three years, and he doesn’t subscribe to her purity bullshit or uphold it anyway, thank you very much.
nos cedamus amori | Ashur/Tarquin longfic for @frek
The first time Tarquin met the Viper, he got this niggling feeling at the back of his mind. Something almost clicking into place, like he should recognize this man. Recognize his blue eyes. The gentleness in his gaze.
He just seemed so fucking familiar. Tarquin just couldn’t quite put a finger on where he recognized him from.
It frustrated him to no end. He kept brooding over it for days, weeks, digging through his memories as though they were files in the bloody archive. Trying to figure it out.
Featuring this amazing artwork by the lovely @fangtheblind!
it felt like freedom | Ashur/Tarquin oneshot for @bendingwind
Ashur had never seen Tarquin cry.
Not even once. Not even when the news of his father's death reached them by missive.
everything I hold dear | Ashur/Tarquin oneshot for @stellaianua
The first time Tarquin kisses Ashur’s hand, it catches him completely off-guard.
The gesture is so soft, so tender, so completely unlike the Tarquin he knows that Ashur doesn’t really know what to do with himself for a little while afterwards. Or really, a good while.
Maker preserve him.
light the fuse | Ashur/Tarquin oneshot for @that-aster
As always in this fucking city, it was raining.
And the thing was, the ever-present downpour in Minrathous never washed things fully clean. It just made the grime slicker, turning the cobblestones of the lower districts into treacherous, muddy terrain. The kind that made you break an ankle if you weren’t paying attention. Or fall flat on your face.
Perfect conditions for an ambush. Absolutely terrible conditions for keeping one’s footing while trying to fight off Venatori zealots.
The Better Bargain | Gen OC&OC oneshot for @celestialteapot
The Grand Necropolis was usually a place of solemnity, the silence broken only by the shuffling of bones, the whisper of spirits, and the occasional clatter of Manfred dropping something he wasn’t supposed to be touching.
But not today. Today, they had a visitor. And an unexpected one, at that.
Mysterious Ways | Hector/Quillon oneshot for @stellaianua
They say a healer’s hands are made for mending, not fighting, but Quillon learned quickly that in Tevinter, sometimes you have to break a few bones to save a soul.
For a while he questioned, even if only a little, if it was worth it. Worth the brutality. Worth what it did to him. Worth how it made him wake in the night, drenched in sweat, nightmares keeping him from sleeping again.
Then he met Hector, and together they became harder to break. They reinforced each other in all the ways that mattered.
And he decided that yes, it was worth it. All of it.
go against the grain | Ashur/Tarquin + Davrin & Tarquin longfic for @stellaianua
Nobody check how long it's been since I updated this. I have most of it written out and yet only 3 chapters on AO3. Oops. I'll try to update soon. It's on my quest log.
Tarquin’s relationship with Davrin starts off very rocky, as many of them seem to. He can’t even bloody call it a friendship at first, because it’s safe to say he can’t even stand the sight of the other man.
And although I usually keep my fandoms separate, here's a tiny bonus:
all these years of running (they led me straight to you) | Mike Wheeler/Will Byers longfic
It starts like any other day. Well, perhaps not any other day, considering Max is still down for the count with no signs of waking up. Either way, it doesn’t feel like anything special or different, at first.
Until it does.
I've unfortunately got WIPs up in event limbo so can't share much there.
There is, however, this:
Mae all but tumbles into the cellars, eyes frantic, her usually perfectly coiffed hair askew. “The Venatori have Ashur.”
Fuck. Have more gut-wrenching words ever been spoken? Tarquin’s heart feels like it drops straight out of his boots. It’s like a bucket full of ice-cold water has been dumped over his head.
Fuck, no, not Ashur. They’ll cut him up. Unmask him. Make an example of him. Torture him—
Which I shall not, in fact, explain. 💜✨
Lastly: without online communities and the support of my fantastic friends, I don't think I would've ever started writing seriously enough to have 10 recent fics to link, so thank you so much, each and every one of you.
Tagging everyone who's already tagged in this who wants to (oops sorry) and @frostbittensun, @ashesandhoneyandgames, @shotce, @handsignals, @vands38
Dawes and some familiar Shadows playing Wicked Grace in the Cobbled Swan. Gee, Tarquin, I wonder why you're losing... Thank you for hosting, @shadow-dragon-week!
