"kids don't pay attention in class anymore Because Of Phone" is so funny as an argument. students haven't paid attention in class since school was invented. my parents' generation were in there making flipbooks out of the corners of their notebooks and doodling random shit instead of taking notes. and they didn't have phones.
this may sound true, but phones are genuinely decreasing attention spans. not to mention functional literacy in the US (i’m aware this poster isn’t referring to the US, but that’s where i’m from) is decreasing. i’m seeing daily that students’ reading stamina is extremely low m, and most of my students, including the ones ON grade level, often refuse to read entire passages, only skimming for answers. guess where they learned to do that!!!
i’m over the moon when my students are drawing or writing to avoid paying attention versus sneaking games on their chromebook or secretly looking at their phones lol
Okay but people have skimmed passages literally as long as long passages of text have existed. I think it’s a little bad faith to say that’s all due to phones.
Case in point, I roleplayed my way through grades 7-12 in school. I had either my iPod or my phone, and I was roleplaying with either friends on the internet or my ex. Some of us ARE writing, we’re just doing it digitally. I also vividly remember discussing Shakespeare with a friend in another country, because he was actually interested in Shakespeare and my classmates weren’t. I couldn’t get a stimulating discussion about Shakespeare in a high school classroom, but I could online.
Coincidentally, when I hit uni and got into classes that were actually stimulating, I literally didn’t even think about using my phone. I forgot it existed while I got into discussions of like, queerness in twelfth night.
this is very true, AND I should mention that I think skimming is an important skill to have. it’s also one I actively teach my students because they need to be able to skim for things they’ve already read without rereading an entire passage (because of time limits on standardized testing, which i hate!).
it’s also amazing that you spend a large part of your time on the internet doing things that promote literacy. i would argue most students aren’t doing that, and in large part, the way they interact online is via ways that make it difficult to type or read (phone applications, for example).
all this being said, a quick google search returns tons of research on our attention spans shrinking, particularly when phones are in reach, and most kids have phones nowadays. AND functional literacy is on the decline. I don’t know if these are correlated! I’m willing to guess it’s a part of it.
I was complaining about skimming because I mostly have a problem with refusal to engage with passages/books as a whole, which I would say has to do with reading stamina, which has to do with attention span.
I also have many feelings about how interesting/stimulating we can make school. it’s difficult to tailor to 20+ kids interests, especially when we’re working with low reading levels. I’m glad that you could find things you were more interested in in higher education!
I do think our educational system is failing so many kids with disabilities. which is a whole other can of worms.
anyways, thank you for engaging so thoughtfully :) I’m glad to hear your experiences.

work is so fucking dull this week that its causing me to draw and think about things i would normally never consider. like i do not like five nights at freddys i have not thought about those games since 2015 and all further series knowledge has just been absorbed through cultural osmosis. yet ive drawn nothing but the rabbit one in my notebook all day.
the one that murders people
literally how many rabbits can there possibly be
